hi Michele, I'd say they considered it transitional because it incorporated new production techniques thanks to the use of improved recording equipment that added to their core sound. With the albums that followed, they continued to expand their sound by adding new instruments. For example, on the next album "Deguello" all three band members learned to play the sax and created their own horn section, which sounds fantastic! On subsequent albums, including their most successful "Eliminator," synthesizers slowly but surely crept in, although they seemed to want to hide the fact because they weren't listed as instruments on any of the album credits. They would finally return to their blues roots on Rhythmeen released in 1996.

@@SouthernRocker Thanks for taking the time to reply. Appreciated. Transitional in that way it makes perfectly sense, as if in a chronological mode, I would say. Sometime the term transitional brings a negative accent with it, but it’s not this the case. However about the synths. Obviously they - the ZZ Top guys - are shy… 😁😉🤭. Can’t expect they just tell you straightforwardly yes we play synths now 😂. However they listed it somehow: they listed guitars, right ? You are not going to detail it saying 6 or 12 strings, electric or acoustic, you just say guitars. So included are the guitar synths, well ahead Pat Metheny…😉🤫.
