How can I make better drum covers without microphones?

That's a good tough question... with my original couple of videos I did without Microphones, I recorded the drums with just my Nikon camera and used a Rhode attachment microphone on the camera. I then put that recording on top of the music. Not the best sounding but still sounded better than the built in camera mic.
