@19stoney645 ай бұрын
As cold as it is right now, I still don’t see ya’ll hiking in that many layers. Personally I would be taking a couple layers off the first mile. Lol. I was out doing the same thing. It was 8 here in southern Indiana today. I had on my base layers synthetic, one synthetic t-shirt and my puffy coat. Toboggan and gloves were synthetic and thin. One pair of darn tough mereno wool socks and regular altra trail runners. I was warm and had to open up my puffy. I had on thin convertible pants. I don’t have any hard outer shell pants or coats. I didn’t even have my pack on so I wasn’t working hard. I can see where the real challenge can come in to not get too warm and create moisture from inside or hypothermia could happen. Either have to take layers off or hike slower to keep body from sweating. I’m going in April and I don’t plan to be out on trail in any of this kind of cold either. I had a buff on my neck but my mouth was out of it. It will condensate and freeze if mouth is covered. Definitely can’t put your mouth inside your sleeping bag and cause condensation. I checked the weather in Georgia for month of April and it’s 40 lows 60 highs. If some freak winter storm blows by, I’ll be heading for town shelter too even though I have full cold weather under quilts and top quilts for my hammock in pack. I’m not trying to sound like a know it all, I definitely don’t. I’m learning. Hope to meet you both out there. Most likely not, if you’re ahead of me. I decided April to hopefully not deal with this cold stuff. Lol
@Full_Deck_Hikes5 ай бұрын
Definitely a challenge not to get too warm. Had we gone much further or longer we would have been shedding layers. We were dealing with an extreme we plan to avoid on trail but wanted to get out and test some extremes and move around a bit instead of just staying in because it was so cold. We were originally planning for a mid April start but circumstances dictated dates and we changed things up.

Might I suggest your videos contain more footage of what's in front of you or to the sides? You can still narrate but viewers get a better idea of where you're hiking and the terrain if the camera is pointed ahead. If you are highlighting the cold, a couple of seconds of self video works. Best of luck to you both. Successful AT Through hiker class of 2023.

The Tiger Wall UL3 is a large tent, hope you are ready for it. I know it weighs about 2.5lbs and right now that might not seem to be a lot but trust me it is. I did my through hike in 2023 and met two couples who used the two-person ZPACK and it was just right for them. I would ditch any company foot print and go get a piece of TYVEK, wash it a few times, low dry and use that as your ground cloth. I used the Tiger Wall UL2 on my hike and wish I had gone with a ZPACK. I used the factory ground cloth and it was pretty much useless. Setting your tent up in the yard is ok, but you need to get out and hike with it and practice setting it up after a long day on the trail. Work out how many stakes you need, who carries what, etc. Seems you are starting mid-March in the bubble. Expect shelters and surrounding areas to be crowded and the same goes for hostels. If you plan to get off trail, you need to be looking days ahead for vacancies. Best of luck to you guys.
@Full_Deck_Hikes5 ай бұрын
The tiger wall ul3 takes up 118” x 88” whereas the duplex from Zpacks is 100” x 93”. Not a huge increase in space needed. Yes Zpacks is lighter but we hated the Zpacks we had bought and tried. Our current base weight with the ul3 is under 16lbs set for winter gear, so we are comfortable with weights as well.

I made my own awhile back. Very similar to yours. Definitely keeps things warmer much longer. I mainly made it because i often buy the larger meals and they end up being too much for me. I started splitting them in half using ziplock bags. I keep one empty pouch inside the cozy. I place my ziplock bag inside it to keep it from flopping while filling with water. I carry the 750 and 550 toaks pots. The 550 is my coffee cup. I use a pourover style filter because im not a fan of the instant coffee. Made cozies for both my pots. One to keep my coffee hot in colder temps and doubles as insulation from burning my lips on the pot. The other i use on the 750 ml. Pot to keep the remaining water hot in case i want that little extra topoff of coffee. If I do use instant (which is rare for me) I only take my 750 ml pot. For the tiny bit of weight and the fact they take up virtually no extra space, these are great, economical fuel saving pouches. Once weather is warmer, i ditch them except for my 550 pot. Nice thing is, they are simple and cheap to make if you destroy one along the way.

Awesome to hear and thank you for sharing! Sad to say we are debating trying to do without coffee on trail. Not sure yet how that is going to work out
@hindsfeetonhighplaces5 ай бұрын
Reflextex really works well. My one suggestion, from a science stand point, would be to have one control and 3 test pouches. That way you are not opening the pouch and releasing heat at each 5 minute test. Of course that requires you have 3 cozies! If you have a probe thermometer, you could also put the probe in next to the freezer bag and get the temp without opening. But really this is a great scientific review of just how effective those cozies are. Thanks!
@Full_Deck_Hikes5 ай бұрын
That would make a difference and I realized that after I had done the tests.

Going to be honest. During my 2023 thru hike I never saw anyone using an insulated cozy and I hiked Feb - July. Not saying they are not useful but I never saw one used. Best of luck to you on your thru hike attempt.
@Full_Deck_Hikes5 ай бұрын
Thanks! for 1 oz they should save fuel and to carry a smaller cannister and use less fuel I find it a fair trade for colder weather. When it warms up I can trash it if I choose and not loose much. I did a test on one today using boiling water outside in 37 degree temps that I just posted the video on. With the pouch the temp dropped about 31 degrees over a 15 minute span. Goal is to only use our pots for boiling water so we don't have the clean up.
@chaosncheckt93565 ай бұрын
@@Full_Deck_Hikes I tried the "pouring boiling water into a ziplock bag" trick and it wasn't for me. Best of luck on your hike
@chaosncheckt93565 ай бұрын
@@Full_Deck_Hikes The cozy will keep your water/meal hot longer but it doesn't aid in heating the water faster so I can't see how it's going to save you fuel unless I"m missing something.
@Full_Deck_Hikes5 ай бұрын
@@chaosncheckt9356 Correct it does not aid in heating the water faster. Fuel saving comes from not having to continue to heat the water/meal so that it is still hot when it is ready to eat not to mention not having to clean your pot because you cooked in it. I have had to heat things such as the Knorr sides in my pot because they take longer to rehydrate vs some of the more expensive camping meals. In essence you light the stove once, boil the water and you are done with it. Water goes in the meal pouch and stays hotter longer. When it is cold out I find a hot meal helps with mindset more than a cold meal. For me it works and is well worth the 1 oz the pouch weighs
