Hello Kurt and Angie! Hot Foot here. I wanted to introduce myself and my husband, Magilla , and to you because we’ll be just ahead of you on trail and the likelihood we’ll bump into each other is high! Last March we set out to flip-flop the trail, but family and pet needs changed our plans a bit. We have about 500 miles of the AT under our belts and plan to do another 400 or so between mid-February and mid-April 2024. We’ll have our pup with us this time 😊. If there’s anything we can do to help you get ready, just give a shout. Not only are we seasoned backpackers, I also have professional certifications in outdoor leadership. Hope to meet you!

Thank you! We were going to flip flop this year but circumstances pushed us up to an early March start and a NOBO hike instead of a flip flop. We have a border collie that we got to hike with me (curt) when I was doing more solo hiking and she ended up diagnosed with canine disautonomia this past January. The disease has a very low survival rate but she has pulled through. So trying to find someone to watch and care for a high drive pup with some lingering effects from the CD has been a challenge but we are getting it all figured out. Finding someone to take care of the rest of the animals and house has been a whole other challenge but we are getting through that as well. So everything is on track and we hope to meet you guys out there.

I read in the comments you're from Illinois so youll have plenty of cold, snowy, humid, raining, sleet etc nights to test your gear like i do in MO. Lol. I start with the base sleep gear and add clothing, raingear etc as it gets colder. The quilts you have are great! With a warm pad you may not have to carry the extra liner. I get too tied up in them because i toss and turn so i never use one. On really cold nights try a few hot hands thrown in your quilt and see if you can get by with them. Many hikers, like me, use those instead of the extra liners. Great choice on the tent too. Looks like yall are getting it put together well! Looking forward to more videos. Blessings 🙌

Thanks for the tips, we've been around awhile but are no experts by any means. As for the weather, yep, we have a couple months of good test weather coming up. Would be great to leave the liners at home if at all possible. We've worked hard to get gear weight down and really hate seeing it creep up making tweaks for colder weather. Probably will go a little overboard, but I'd rather have an extra pound or so and be comfortable instead of skimping and being colder than we want to be.

@Full_Deck_Hikes I hear ya. Better to be safe than sorry. I think you said under 25 lbs for winter weight, so that's pretty great. If I could sleep in the liners I'd be carrying one. I'm no expert either lol so I enjoy watching other folks videos, like yours, to learn as many tips and tricks as I can or see products I haven't seen before. Very helpful. Thanks for sharing your gear!

Leaving mid-March I don't think they'll need liners

I retire in 2 years and want to hike the AT. Sir, you are so lucky your wife is willing to do this with you. I wish my wife would do so. I have the same Big Agnes tent that you have. It's bullet proof, but it is heavier. I have never used the footprint, but it's not a bad idea on a thru hike. I love it. I also love my Duplex when I'm hiking alone! Great choices! I love my Nemo Tensor pad! I have an Enlightened Equipment Revelation quilt and I love it. It's only about 20 ounces. But, your quilt is great! Put some miles on those legs. I've hiked the Smokies and it's a but kicker! I'm from Kentucky, you sound like you would be from somewhere close! I also subscribed!

Thank you! What's even better is Angie is the one that stepped up and said let's quit our jobs if we have to and go hike the AT. She is as stoked about it as I am. We are looking at sleep pads and the Nemo Tensor is one I am looking at as well as the Thermorest Xtherm NXT. As for location, we are from Southern IL, 80 miles east of St Louis, 80 miles west of Evansville and about 90 miles north of Paducah. We usually hike the Shawnee NF. Now I'm curious what part of KY you are from.

I hope you enjoy the tent! My wife and I have used it the last couple of season section hiking the PCT. The one thing I'll say is that it helps to stake the foot end of the rainfly out on a separate stake than the tent, as it creates a little more space between the mesh and fly, otherwise your quilt will get wet on the footbox. This is only important on wet nights though. It works really well! Also, be sure the head end of the rain fly is pulled out as far as possible to let airflow through, otherwise condensation can be an issue. Space is wonderful in this tent for the weight!

Thank you for the tips! It's the little things you pick up along the way that helps out more with gear than what the manufacturer tells us. I'll have to admit, I'm a little jealous as I would love to hike the PCT as well as the JMT. I suppose I shouldn't say I will never get the chance though as we never thought we would ever get to thru hike the AT either. Anything is possible!

The Tiger Wall UL3 is a large tent, hope you are ready for it. I know it weighs about 2.5lbs and right now that might not seem to be a lot but trust me it is. I did my through hike in 2023 and met two couples who used the two-person ZPACK and it was just right for them. I would ditch any company foot print and go get a piece of TYVEK, wash it a few times, low dry and use that as your ground cloth. I used the Tiger Wall UL2 on my hike and wish I had gone with a ZPACK. I used the factory ground cloth and it was pretty much useless. Setting your tent up in the yard is ok, but you need to get out and hike with it and practice setting it up after a long day on the trail. Work out how many stakes you need, who carries what, etc. Seems you are starting mid-March in the bubble. Expect shelters and surrounding areas to be crowded and the same goes for hostels. If you plan to get off trail, you need to be looking days ahead for vacancies. Best of luck to you guys.

The tiger wall ul3 takes up 118” x 88” whereas the duplex from Zpacks is 100” x 93”. Not a huge increase in space needed. Yes Zpacks is lighter but we hated the Zpacks we had bought and tried. Our current base weight with the ul3 is under 16lbs set for winter gear, so we are comfortable with weights as well.
