Why is there such a big comp difference between the US and UK? I’m from the US and I’m always baffled by low London bankers get comped 40% under NY bankers.

Some people, who don't actually work in CW, say its a bit sterile and soulless. Personally, I like the corporate aesthetic and love having an office there.

I’m an East Londoner and I’m old enough to remember when Canary Wharf tower was the only skyscraper there. When the area was being developed the people of Tower Hamlets (the borough in which the development sits) were promised luxury housing and jobs. Suffice it to say the housing was too expensive and the jobs mainly went to people from outside Tower Hamlets. So this area is pretty much only for high earners and it completely lacks the character of other areas in London like Camden Town, Covent Garden, Borough Market, Brick Lane, Spitalfields, Shaftesbury Avenue, Soho, Shoreditch, Greenwich, Clapham, Brixton, Richmond, Notting Hill, Hampstead Heath, Stoke Newington etc.

Hi, I am a computer science student and I have a question. For the placement year did you do any certifications (e.g. from Microsoft or Google) before applying? I am not so sure about the requirements. What I do know is that my university told me to work on my CV/portfolio. Do we need some sort of prior learning e.g. a certificate from the likes of Microsoft or something similar etc?
@jacobphillips1Ай бұрын
Hi there, I didn’t do any certifications for placement year. The only thing I did for a few was read around about the industry I could be working in. So I went into private equity and I bought a book to read about it. I hope that helps :)

Some notes which I think may help interns & newbies: Recommend the following for working in London in financial services: Clothes - get a navy jacket (that’s everyone) - it goes with everything, any time, anywhere Evening clothes or corporate event clothes can be hired if needed Timpsons is currently doing free dry cleaning for those who are unemployed (includes students) & going to an interview. Go to your local store with proof of an interview eg email with appropriate interview clothes and you’ll get it done for free. For your desk drawer: Ensure your desk drawer has a secure lock on it that works. Lock the drawer at night when you go home Spare home key Always keep a pen that works in your jacket pocket. ALWAYS. Never a biro A notepad for that first meeting Spare chargers A spare shirt or top - in case you spill drinks over the one you’re wearing Kitchen towels, paper tissues, clothing wet wipes Raid the stationery cabinet - spare block of paper, pens, pencils, rulers, eraser, notebook, bull dog clips If there’s a whiteboard, ensure the marker & eraser work Familiarise yourself with how the phones work & ensure you have a sheet with the team phone numbers on the wall An umbrella A bottle of water A bag of nuts in case you have to work through lunch Print out your work on a Friday - always say it’s a draft until it isn’t. Plasters Toothbrush, toothpaste and comb Cash (about a tenner) A torch An up to date passport - keep details elsewhere in case you lose it If you’re going on a flight, print out a copy of your boarding pass in case tech fails at the airport Call/email payroll to ensure they have your name, ID, National Insurance number, P45 if you have a previous job (without it, you could be charged emergency tax) & bank details so you get paid soonest Copy & save your expense receipts, check limits, exemptions and cut off date. If you’re asked to courier out a client document, check with the courier company that it has arrived. If so, call the client’s secretary to say it has arrived, it’s urgent and that reception/post office/security should bring it up. Let your line manager know that it’s arrived. Most couriers deliver to offices on the ground floor when the recipient could be on the 22nd floor. If you don’t do this, your urgent client document may go through the regular postal system & take about a day to arrive. Clients prefer paper documents that they can hold in their hands and scribble all over them. If a group photo is taken, the most important person (the big boss) will be seated in the centre. Try to take up the seat relatively close to your manager but don’t, of course, be in the centre. The least important people in a photo are at the sides. Chin up, chest up, slight angle towards the centre & look straight ahead. Hands clasped in the lap & no arms folded. The most important people in the office are: IT - If they’re in house, make friends with the IT people & show them respect. If they’re located in the building, buy them a coffee, be on first name terms & check in with them for when system upgrades occur usually on a Monday when it’s most inconvenient. Call them first thing Monday morning and you’ll be served first. System upgrades can take about 2 hours. Also, they’re helpful with tech presentation set ups. Everyone bows down before tech these days. The clients. If they’re happy. Your boss will be happy. Small people. Be polite and friendly to security guards (spare keys, prompt package deliveries, duplicate passes & keys) & secretaries (gatekeepers for meetings). Your line manager & everyone else in your team. Useful for a reference. Good luck!

Jacob. Shocked at how few comments there are here. When you’re working, I’d aim to save at least 6 months’ gross salary in case there’s a downturn/recession or to walk away if you don’t like it (FU money). This assumes you can go back to live with your parents, of course. If not, a few months’ more money would help.

I don't understand why this place is so expensive. 1 beds are renting for well north of 3k pcm which is insane even for London standards. You're not near the city center, you're south of the river, and there aren't really many companies there either. If you want a nice modern area with luxury apartments, why not go to Canary Wharf which has a shorter commute into the city, more jobs, and is cheaper? What am I missing?
@jacobphillips12 ай бұрын
I agree, it is very expensive. Things that spring to mind to justify the high price may be the potential for the area to develop and the prices of flats rising, or maybe because of all the businesses there employees are pushing the prices up. Either way this is a seriously expensive area
@dcoughla6812 ай бұрын
Apple HQ is in Battersea & the American Embassy is down the road in Nine Elms. It’s well connected on the Northern Line tube which isn’t perfect but it’s a civilised, clean commute. Canary Wharf is emptying out of the financial sector which is slowly dying and the area is way too far away from Central London so is cheaper.
@orbital13372 ай бұрын
@@dcoughla681 Eh, at least for me, the commute to my office in the city would be a little faster from Canary Wharf via the Elizabeth line or DLR than from Battersea. And sure, some companies have moved out after Brexit but there's way more high paying jobs in Canary Wharf.

London is so expensive. The price of these apartments is extortionate. 1.5 million for a 1 bed is beyond the means of most people from the UK. I would imagine this entire development is marketed for the foreign investor. If you factor in the crime and general anti social behaviour in Battersea or South London generally, the developer will struggle to attract the wealthy clientele. 14 years of Conservative rule has ruined the reputation of London.
@dcoughla6812 ай бұрын
It’s only extortionate because Apple has its HQ there & the American Embassy is in Nine Elms down the road. People who live there are foreign wealthy, young and mobile (transient). There is private security in this area so less anti-social behaviour. This wealth will end when the USA goes into recession & advances in tech (AI) & working from home is 100% complete. The new Labour Government has scrapped £1.5bn earmarked for AI & tech innovation in the UK. Given that Battersea, King’s Cross & Cambridge are becoming the most future prosperous areas of the country, this is a bad move.
@kerolgiler8221Ай бұрын
