I've had a Timberline Outfitter 4 for many many years, as it was the tent we used in Boy Scouts, so I bought one of my own as an adult after messing around with a bunch of cheap, WalMart quality tents that hardly made it thru a camping season. But the 4 was always a bit small for my needs. I always longed for the 6, but never got one. Having just heard that Eureka is sadly going away this year, I finally bought one! Looking forward to having a tent I can stand up in! Thanks for you great review!

As a big bull walked into my view, I couldn’t tell if he was a 50”. I decided to let him walk off. The next day I realized in the excitement I forgot to count brow tines completely! Chalk that up with inexperience judging racks. Lesson learned. Thanks for the informative video!

I had a 5 x 7 2man in the 70's ( still have ) - was a great tent. In the 90's I think I got the base which was 9 x 7 I think. Keep in mind I used these for truck camping NOT backing. A queen air mattress fit fine in my base. Had a ground tarp, vestibule, inner cargo net, and a kelty tarp for an extra rain fly. They are not backpackers, however I never had any issues in WNY 3 season camping. Especially for 1/2 to 1/4 the price of specialty brands. Got the K2-XT which I've wanted for foul weather - haven't used it yet. Everything is 1. What do you need as in where are you going. 2. How much do you want to spend. Yes there are many better tents but for the price I loved Eureka.

Great video, but your wrong on the ferry boats, now the only ferry from the Kenai Peninsula that will get you to Kodiak is the tustemena, and it only leaves from Homer, and it’s more around 11 hrs depending on the weather. The ferry used to leave out of Seward, no more. Only the kennicott leaves Kodiak only approx once a month for the cross gulf trip heading south. Just saying.😉

Excellent! Some images such as color infrared photos may be really old in Alaska...a recent landslide from thawing permafrost or a recent wildfire may create downed trees in narrow stream may not appear on old color infrared photos. Another consideration is can a extreme shallow jet boat get up a river...in some areas of Alaska, jet boats travel for days up rivers for hunting.

Thanks for the feedback, Missy! Yes, the AHAP program which generated the CIR images, took place from the late 1970s through the early 1980s. Therefore the images are indeed dated. But I believe the images are still of immense value to Alaska river floaters, whether they're hunting, hiking, fishing, or river rafting. Even though a particular logjam that shows on a CIR may have long ago washed out to sea and been sawn up for lumber somewhere, rivers tend to jam in the same general areas as a result of landcover and terrain issues. Of course, the location of whitewater sections will not have changed, because these are often created as a result of constricted terrain, which will not have changed over the years. This means that the CIR images from all those years ago are still very relevant for trip-planning purposes, and the best news is that they're available for free download! The free session here is only one of ten sessions in our Alaska hunt planning series that use the CIR images and Google Earth imagery to get a close look at terrain and vegetation, along with river hazards, for the purpose of identifying prime big-game habitat, river hazards, and other features relevant for folks floating remote Alaska rivers. It's all available on our Alaska Outdoors University system for $35 / month. In addition to that resource, I provide a direct, hands-on coaching and mentoring service for folks planning remote Alaska expeditions. Both are available at this link: member.alaskaoutdoorssupersite.com/signup

@@AKSupersite GAIA GPS is another good source of modern high resolution imagery as well as wildfire perimeters, land ownership, contour lines, etc. I use Gaia GPS to navigate with my phone and to scout rivers with my laptop computer.
@AKSupersite
@AKSupersite 3 жыл бұрын
@@RetrieverTrainingAlone I didn't know about GAIA GPS. Just signed up. I have been using AllTrails, which appears to do much the same thing. Their interface puts the toggle for other layers right on the screen so you can easily toggle layers on or off. I used AllTrails for several of the sessions in this series, and will take a look at GAIA GPS to see if it warrants a session all its own. One of my sessions reviews the fire data, which is readily available online. But it's important for hunters to realize that many of Alaska's wildfires don't touch the understory and are therefore irrelevant when it comes to habitat loss.

@@AKSupersite GAiA GPS is useful in the field for navigating back to the raft or navigating back to a kill site, for looking at imagery during the trip, for determining the number of minutes and miles floated, determining miles to the next campsite or takeout or even showing cell phone coverage maps. I use an InReach and GAIA GPS on a smart phone on a daily basis in remote areas in interior Alaska with no cell phone coverage.

One problem with most gear reviews is the review is typically "unboxing reviews". To me what is important is will the gear last 20+ years, yet 20 year old gear is rarely reviewed. Gear that has lasted me over 20 years include Leki trekking poles, Helly Hansen and Grundens rain gear, Leupold scopes, Arctic Oven tent, etc. For "new gear" I like reviews that at least really test the potential of the gear lasting 20+ years. For example: trekking pole stress test: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6GqooGpmaeLq7s

@@newlifeeveryday1821 there are two windows only. One in the door and one in the back of the tent. Keep in mind that there are several different models available, so check out their site for the best fit for your situation. www.airframesalaska.com/Airframes-tents_a/289.htm

@AKSupersite 3 жыл бұрын
@@newlifeeveryday1821 there is no evidence that I am aware of which would suggest that bears or other predators are attracted to a tent because of its color. As a user, there are two considerations with respect to color: 1) visibility from a distance (which helps you locate the tent when you're returning to camp, and 2) interior lighting. Lighter-colored tents allow more light inside, which allows the occupants to read, or do other things inside the tent without having to use a light, during those days when you're holed up inside the tent because of inclement weather.

the stove is an expensive stove, heat up fast but if you load it with bigger pieces for the night it will get to hot and 2 hours later it is in sub zero and if you close the 2 cheminey vents it will smoke because the stove door is not air tight and you need some protection under the stove for the floor

We launched the Alaska Outdoors University with 34 sessions on Alaska hunt planning. Poor planning is the number one reason why so many Alaska hunts fail, and many first-timers can attest to the thousands of dollars they've spent on what amounted to little more than a series of expensive camping trips. Take the time to educate yourself on the insider scoop of Alaska hunt planning, and watch your success rate skyrocket! akoutdoorsuniversity.com
