Because of your comprehensive reading taste, the list is so diverse and interesting. I like how you introduce us to a variety of great books that are not trendy and how eloquently you convey your thoughts. Keep up the good work, your videos are top-notch!

Hi, Zeke - this is my first time commenting on one of your videos. You read a wonderful variety of books! Of the ones you talked about, the only one I've read is "The Road" - I love that book! I've read Toni Morrison before - "Beloved" and "The Bluest Eye" - of those two, I would say "Bluest Eye" is my favorite. "Cosmicomics" sounds so intriguing to me! I had never heard of it, nor of that author. I may need to pick that one up! Anyway, thanks for the list of recommendations and your thoughtful reviews.

Returning to your channel always lifts my spirits. At 77 yo, I find so little interest in reading and discussing literature .Keep it going!

So many of these on my TBR too - would love if you did a book club or buddy reads!

"The Bee Sting"! An investment of time, yes, but so much worth it!

Love your videos and we have so many TBR overlaps. I’ve heard demon copperhead isn’t dependent on reading David Copperfield, but I highly recommend you read David Copperfield at some point. In my opinion, it’s one of Dickens’ best and most accessible reads.

The Guest by Emma Cline, a disliked book with a dislikable main character and no plot. I'm intrigued. Seriously, I'm adding it to my wish list With respect for your Phoebe Bridgers t-shirt, I'll have to check out Japanese Breakfast . I'm glad Steve Donighue mentioned your channel. Thanks for sharing, Zeke.

This is fascinating: so until just a couple of years ago, you basically only read fantasy, and now you read so much contemporary literary fiction? What changed? What’s started importing contemporary fiction into your reading?
@BookishBaddie5 ай бұрын
I’ve realised I’m kind of like that too. For the past 3 years I was reading fantasy. Then I started shifting to cozy fantasy. Now Im obsessed with literary/historical fiction. Personally it’s just phases that I have. Back then (in college) I wanted exciting and action paced stories not set in this world. But these days I want thought-provoking and meaningful stories that help me feel deeply after a long day of work. Hope that gives you some insight! 😁

Based on this video you NEED to read The Shards by Bret Easton Ellis. It’s pure like summer horror/psychological thriller/ autofiction set in 1980s LA. Ellis himself is also a massive Didion and Babitz fan and it shows.

Agreed! I highly recommend The Shards. I read it in just a few days last summer, could not put it down.

That's interesting to hear your thoughts. I'm an older reader and this century is really yours and your contemporaries. I've read most of your selection and pretty much in agreement with you. I'm from Australia and if I can encourage you to pick up a book from Australia I'd like to. Praiseworthy by Alexis Wright just won our two most prestigious awards and it's a madcap book with lots of interesting content, it's a long book and a bit of a commitment but worth a try. Happy Reading

T&t&t didn’t work for me either. The only brilliant thing about that book was the manufacturing game she built in the beginning. It’s hard for that “tragic plot twist” to hit me since I personally find that character kind of narcissistic and passively manipulative lol. I get that she wants to write unlikable complex characters, but without giving those characters an arc triggers some empathy, it’s hard to feel bad for them.

@zeketreads6 ай бұрын
Personal favorite is Play it as it Lays, but it’s a novel and she’s known for her essay work! Would still recommend that, or Slouching Towards Bethlehem, which is a great place to start with her essays.

I really enjoyed this video! Butler is one of my favorite authors as well. Shes so unique and I really believe that most can't come close to her ideas and writing. I read some of her short stories in University and am currently reading Parable of the Sower. It is written with such finesse, and I'm excited to read th sequel.

i really loved into the dream house too but i had to put it down a couple of times because it's really a lot to take in. She wrote it in an interesting way and it's such an important topic to talk about. And as she says, there's a big gap of information to be filled and the book does a good job in showing how an abusive relationship develops and what it feels like to be in one.

I know Joan Didion isn't really known for her fiction, but I enjoyed Play It as It Lays. So I'll add Democracy to my TBR as well.
