for those like me who don't need to use a down rigger on a kayak, which produces considerable drag on one side, i'm not sure it's necessary, even in salt water where there can be very strong current. but i'm asking the question before being tempted to buy??
@kckayakfishingКүн бұрын
@andreveilleux8640 the bigger aluminum rudders allow for zero flexing in strong currents like the plastic rudders, sharper turns which help out a ton on the PDL 120s our kayaks are kind of slugs so it's great to get any help we can in the steering department. And they also don't lift up in the water like the factory rudders, obviously because they're heavier. Is it a necessity? No, but then again, neither is a trolling motor, kayak crates, or fish finders, yet we all have them. I guess it all comes down to if someone is in need of more steering performance, for us specifically, it was a must-have upgrade, especially with running downriggers, but that doesn't mean that someone without a downrigger could also benefit from upgrading the rudder. Plus, it's always fun to customize the kayaks! 😂 Thanks for watching!

Love your videos guys! I'm trying to build the nerve to move off local large lakes and onto the Puget Sound this season, two questions: Do you run any lights on your boats for navigation/safety? Would you consider a video on what someone would need to know, i.e. surf, swells, safety considerations when kayak fishing the ocean?
@kckayakfishing6 күн бұрын
@jonlewis7140 Thanks so much! Currently, we do not run any red/green navigation lights. We just try our best not to be out on the water or at least in the boat traffic areas with low visibility. We do have some flashing white led lights on our radios, and we'll be installing a solar led light onto our flag poles this year. We were just talking about an ocean kayak fishing safety video, and will be filming soon! But some immediate safety tips that we always consider is wind speed, and currents when ocean fishing, as well as having a plan, letting someone know what that plan is, and sticking to that plan no matter how good the fishing is. But we'll go over everything we do to stay as safe as possible on the water in the video. Thanks for watching!

@EnglishAngling awesome! Thanks for the suggestion! Our biggest issue was rust and corrosion happening on the usb cable going to our go pros. It didn't see to matter how expensive of a cable it still seemed to happen. Probably from where we decided to install the usb port, we take a decent amount of water over the bow, and the port would get sprayed quite a bit. Possibly looking into switching the location to maybe under the seat, we'll definitely look into the Noqua usb c adapters though! Thanks for watching!

Great Setup! You have as much on your kayaks as I have on my 22' boat. I just picked up a REVO 13 and working to rig it up now with few rod holders, good gps, etc. I had another Hobie about 10 years ago and I put as much stuff as I could think of and fit, But.... after a few trips I found that going with less equipment & lighter kayak I was able to get out and fish more often and it was not exhausting to load & unload. What are your thoughts ? Also any good ideas or recommendations for Livewell ?
@kckayakfishing7 күн бұрын
@halftime174 thank you! You are 100% correct, less is more when it comes to kayak fishing, we are fortunate to have a cargo trailer that we use to store and transport the kayaks, so everything pretty much stays in place and we just throw them in after a day of fishing and go. But it's true, if you pack a lot of gear, one way or another, it's all going to have to come back with you, and that can be exhausting! But we always say it's a labor of love! We don't have livewells, but I'm pretty sure Hobie makes a "plug and play" livewell, but being Hobie, it's guaranteed to be pricey! Maybe a KZbin search of DIY livewells for kayaks could be helpful, sorry to not be much help, we haven't gone down the livewell rabbit hole yet! 😆 Thanks for watching!

@kckayakfishing8 күн бұрын
@livenhfree no problem at all! You're going to love the PDL 120! The carts can fit in the back or the kayak behind the seat, but they are pretty heavy. We pretty much always take them back to our truck or trailer. If parking is a long way from the water, we bring a bike lock and chain the carts to a tree. Our old Pelican carts were much smaller and lighter, so we used to attach them to the back of our Kayak Crates, but since we don't use crates anymore, we find leaving the new carts behind works best. OK, so I'm a complete newbie and the PDL 120 will be my first kayak. At 17:30 you show the Navarre scupper mount installation, but what is it for? And it looks like it's a part of that whole wiring kit? Also, I assume it's mounted through an existing scupper hole. If so, doesn't that defeat the function of the scupper? Thanks!
@kckayakfishingАй бұрын
@livenhfree The scupper mount holds the transducer for our Garmin Striker fish finders. The nice thing about that mount is it keeps the transducer tucked up tight to the underside of the hull, lessening the chance of damaging it when beaching/launching the kayaks. It goes through the scupper hole directly in front of the PDL drive, the top plate of the scupper mount does have some decent sized holes in it, allowing any water to still pass through the scupper hole. Thanks for watching!

@@kckayakfishing Actually, one more question. On that Garmin... does it come with maps? I'll be fishing mostly salt inshore (rivers/inlets) and I really don't want to get lost on a new body of water. ;-)

@livenhfree the Garmin Striker 4 Plus doesn't have maps built in, or a card that you can buy, but it does record the bottom as you pass over it, so you create your own maps, it also has tracking ability so a little dotted line follows your path which you could use to find your way back, we've had to use that a couple times after getting lost in the fog 😂 But to have actual maps available for new areas we use the Navionics app on our phones, it's a paid subscription but well worth it for us.

Great stuff, thank you! Can't wait to get my PDL 120. In one respect, I'm kind of surprised (but maybe I shouldn't be) that Old Town doesn't use brass bolt inserts to prevent stripping the threads in the hull. Good that you mention several times that you don't need to torque down the screws too much.
@kckayakfishingАй бұрын
@livenhfree our guess on the brass inserts would be anything to cut costs and keep the profit margins up! There's no screw or bolt on the PDL 120 that needs to be torqued right down, these kayaks have a ton of movement in them when expanding and contracting with the warmer/colder weather. Just keep them snug, and that's good enough! 👍

Thank you! Let me just say... OMG, I'm 100% sure I won't get this right. Anyway, a couple of questions: 1.) early in the vid, when you were checking the travel of the rudder handle, you said it wasn't even close and would need adjusting. Can you explain what you mean by this and what adjustment you had to make, and where/how? 2.) at the end, you talk about replacing the other (?) rudder handle because you said you don't need the tension any more because it's set at the back. What do you mean by this also, and if you don't need it, why are you replacing it? Thanks again, very nice tutorial.
@kckayakfishingАй бұрын
@livenhfree the rudder deployment handle sometimes needs to be adjusted after installing a new rudder just to make sure it has full range of motion when raising and lowering the rudder. Unfortunately, we don't have a video yet up yet on how to make the adjustments but here's a link to a video explaining how to do it, Nick always does a fantastic job with his how to videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKqvnJh3a96CqdEsi=zhxVAI2igmn4spC6 We replaced the rudder steering handle to the Navarre Handle, since we replaced the stock rudder pin with a bolt that we can tighten, we didn't need then factory handle with the adjustable tension knob, the original handle only tightens the steering from the handle and not the actual rudder itself, so replacing seemed like a great idea, the new handles feel much more solid and come in a couple different height sizes. Probably not a necessity to upgrade, but we've become sort of addicted to upgrading and customizing our kayaks! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the great video! I'm adding a rudder upgrade to my Christmas list and am torn between the Navarre, Boondox, and PYA. I’ve read that the Boondox is quite heavy at 3 lbs, which can make raising and lowering tricky. Do you know the weight of the PYA and whether it has any similar issues? Also, do you feel this rudder can help improve tracking? The back end of my yak tends to get a bit squirrely on windy days. Thanks in advance!
@kckayakfishing2 ай бұрын
@danholzmedia no problem! The Navarre rudder replacement is definitely the lightest due to the less material used, we've used their rudders along with many others and have zero quality complaints, Nick puts out amazing stuff for our kayaks, the only issue with the Navarre rudder is while it does stop the flexing compared to the plastic rudder, it does nothing to actually improve the steering performance, which in all fairness it wasn't designed for that. The boonedox rudders I've heard are quite heavy, not 100% sure if the PYA rudder is lighter, but it definitely feels like it, the biggest thing with any bigger rudders to watch out for is raising and lowering while holding onto the steering knob, this will offer the least resistance, our biggest concern when adding a heavier rudder was the lift/lower handle itself possibly breaking so we try to grab it not from the furthest point, but closer in towards the base, lessening the torque on the plastic handle. All in all, it's a small price to pay for the steering performance, and we've purposely tried to break something on our kayaks with the new rudders, unsuccessfully. Everything has held up great over the last year with zero issues. The PYA rudder will definitely help with the tracking issues and that squirrely feeling. We use our kayaks in some pretty intense swells and waves, and with the new rudders, we still haven't felt like we're out of control when a wave hits behind us. We highly recommend the PYA P3 Pinnacle for all sportsman model kayaks, but whichever rudder you decide to go with, just make sure you're prepared to play around a bit with the steering cables and possibly add a bolt to the rudder and lose the stock pin. Bigger rudders have a bigger surface area, so they grab a ton more water, so tightening the cables and bolt will help eliminate that "loose" feeling when you first install it. Any other questions, feel free to ask! Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

Great to see you in both again on YT! Great review and coverage of the important points. I'm buying this new rudder for ONE REASON when I've hooked a fish while trolling, for my best landing results I like to keep my speed up in the opposite direction of the fish, so I need to keep a straight line and not be circling back toward the fish. A rudder like this makes that easier without continually adjusting the steering knob every 10 seconds while fighting the fish. Even if it prevents the knob adjustments by half, that's more time focused on the fish and not the Yak direction. 110% worth it for any saltwater trolling kayak. End of rant.
