At least whitley is still recognisable even after 50yrs plus. Especially gong towards the amusements. Who remembers the lazer quest back in the early 90s.

Happy memories of the "Spannawilly" from 1950s, but unchanged on the video. The "House that Jack Built" is there, but not the "Wall of Death". Maybe that was considered unsafe, but it was fun!

I remember spending many days at that place, winning on some fruit machines and going to the chippy right next to the entrance and they were always served in a paper cone, ah the good old days.

So it wasn’t just Exeter that lost historic parts of the city to idiotic road building schemes and misguided attempts at modernising in the 1960s. What Hitler didn’t destroy the city council continue to do so to this day.

Never mind the comments below. I’m a North Shields kid who at 10yrs old together with my mates used to walk to Tynemouth everyday in the summer and use the outdoor pool. Never paid to get in. Didn’t have any money. Used to distract the guy on the entrance and sneak in one by one. Great times. Fabulous in fact, and the water was a lot warmer than the little outdoor pool in North Shields at Hawkeys Lane. Now that was an ice cold pool. And you couldn’t sneak in either. Simpler times. Better times. When we all had nothing….but we had it all!

I used to go in the seventies with my mother, brother and sister. We didn't have much money but my mother managed to take us a few times in the summer every year, it has a special place in my heart. I go to Tynemouth at least twice a week nowadays, it is sad to see it in such decay, they should have looked after it

All in the name of 'progress'. Disgraceful. I believe the chip shop and cafe featured in one of the 'Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads' episodes was very near Blaydon railway station.

I look at this and so much floods back. The sun on my face. A whiter shade of pale playing at the funfair. The nags pinball machine I got so many replays on. The smell of the cars on the speedway ride. The taste and smell of the hamburgers. My awful marksmanship on the air rifles. The breeze in my face on the wet sand at the beach. In later years riding through on a BSA, or a Yamaha RD, or whatever else I was on in a given year. Sitting in one or other of the cafes listening to the jukeboxes. A cool pint at the Delaval Arms. Thank you for this and thank you Whitley Bay.

I was brought up in Whitley and still get back there a couple of times a year. The recent investment has really improved the beach area and the restaurants have improved markedly since this was filmed in the 90s. Looking forward to my pre-Xmas fix later in the month!

Such a shame it was deliberately burnt to the ground 😢it was a lot older than what was said, and it was in fact a royal palace, once owed by the king of bernicia before the separate kingdoms became England, and there were palaces all around the world almost exactly the same as that and on beach fronts and they all burn down

Sadly I missed the demolition of the chimneys, but I do remember a visit to the power station in the late 60s or maybe it was in the 70s. My friend's dad worked there so there was an open day, so see how it all worked. OK, there were turbines etc, but what I recall most was that ice cream was free for the kids ... and you could go back for more as often as you wanted. .. Think I went 4 times .. or was it 5🍦🍦
