Thanks for sharing! I am headed out to DV in late January 2025, and reconfigured my Shimoda insert (the large mirrorless) to keep at least one of my Z7's bodies already attached to my 100-400. My thinking is that will minimize to some degree lens changes out in the dunes which will allow less sand/dust into the body and on the sensor. Thoughts? You've been to DV a lot more than me... am I worried too much about this with my Z7's? Thanks again!!
@JeffreyTadlockPhotographyКүн бұрын
If you have the large insert, I think what you are doing is a good move - so nice to be able to fit the camera with lens attached into the bag. Especially in the sand dunes if there is any breeze or wind blowing sand around. I am pretty trusting of my Z7II, but minimizing lens swaps in the dunes is smart. Have a great trip - feel free to let me know if you have any questions (you can email me via the contact form on my website)!

As usual, great advice! Avoid GAS, (Gear Acquisition Syndrome), Practice, and the one I benefitted from lately, ENJOY the process. Recently you mentioned attending a workshop which brings up the social aspect of photography. Clubs work too, like minded people can help you objectively review your images and offer great advice. If the only feedback you get is from Instagram or a similar platform, you may not get much help. I've been at it awhile and the thing I try to remember is to know your audience. If you're taking pictures to share, know who you are targeting. If you're taking pictures for yourself, please yourself. Also, don't be afraid to look at other subjects. For example, wildlife, street, or astro. Explore to see what different things are like. You already spent the money on the camera and gear, it isn't like film where you have to pay to see it. Wear out your trigger finger! Get out, explore new places and things. That's the BEST part of photography!

Thanks Jon! And some great advice you've added as well! I definitely enjoy my local photography club. And seeking feedback is an excellent one as well - I should do something on that topic alone! I use Nikon 80-400mm with FTZ adapter and I am happy with it. The only downside is the relatively high weight, which is further increased by the FTZ adapter. I was thinking about the Nikon Z 100-400mm, but it's also heavy, expensive, and only starts at 100mm. Another alternative is the Tamron Z 50-400mm, but I haven't found a good comparison to the Nikon 80-400 yet, I suspect that even though it's an older lens, it might be sharper compared to the new Tamron. I found some opinions on the Internet, but they are different and unprofessional. It would be nice if someone did tests of the same level as you do. Maybe you have an opinion, which is better old Nikon or new Tamron?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography9 күн бұрын
The Nikon 100-400 definitely hits the heavy and expensive categories! My first attempt at using a 100-400 lens was with the Sigma 100-400 f-mount that I used the FTZ adapter with. While it was still heavy, it was inexpensive! Once I started carrying it more that's when I wanted to get to the native Z mount (plus an option for a tele-converter should I go that direction). I am very curious about the Tamron Z 50-400mm. I've been on the fence about picking it up just to try it, I might do a longer rental of it first here in a few weeks just so I have some hands on with it. It seems like high potential to hit that super zoom category. I have several f-mount Tamron lenses that I am still very happy with for portrait and event work - so I know Tamron can make some really great glass. I wouldn't be able to comment on a comparison to the 80-400mm though, I haven't used that lens. (Off to see if my local shop rents a Tamron 50-400mm) Thanks for watching!

I agree with your use of the Nikon 100-400mm. I have one and love its performance and also the fact that it has a really short close focus distance useful for occasional closeups. However, because of its weight I recently purchased the new Nikon 28-400mm which combines the best of both worlds. It is much lighter and allows you to quickly try out a range of focal lengths without switching lenses. Its only drawback is the fact that it is not as sharp as the 100-400mm and doesn't focus as closely. Have you tried the 28-400mm lens and what do you think of it?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography11 күн бұрын
There is definitely a weight factor with either the Nikon 100-400 or the Sigma 100-400 I used to use. While the focal length was growing on me, there were many times I was like "nah, not taking it today, too heavy." I have the 28-400mm, I did a video on it a bit back: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZWWqnRnrL6NorM I agree with your drawbacks for the most part, but still a pretty decent lens I thought. It grew on me a bit more when I took it to Arizona a few months ago paired with the 14-30mm. On that trip I didn't have a lot of time for photos, but knew I'd get one good chance out - so I wanted a light, but versatile setup. I was happy with the photos I got with it.

I’d been considering getting the 100-400mm for landscape photography and lightening my bag for the longest time after watching your videos and those of other landscape photographers. However, I went with the Tamron 50-400mm Z so I could go to a 2 lens kit using it and the 14-30mm f/4 S lens. I also didn’t think there were enough optical differences to justify twice the price. I can say that I’m loving being able to shoot at >200mm while using filters. Also, I have almost that exact same waterfall shot (5:18) from when I went to Hocking Hills back in April of 2023….and yea, it was with a wide angle lens.

The Tamron 50-400mm is a promising option - I am sort of curious to try it out, just to see how it does. It definitely opens up the option of just going with two lenses (and I do like my 14-30mm, great lens!). Cedar Falls is my favorite in the park! Always a good time visiting Hocking Hills!

I actually had good luck with it in Arizona, I think I finally got a good for for it on that trip. For landscapes it is pretty cool option (The image quality of the 100-400 is better, but the 28-400 is totally passable and makes up for it in versatility).

@@mrz1342 I prefer the 100-400mm for most occasions. The 28-400mm is handy due to its versatility in one lens. So if I am going on a trip where photography is not the main activity the 28-400mm can be handy. But if I could only have one, I'd lean 100-400.

I too love my Nikon 100-400. However, my all time favorite is my F 70-200 2.8. I bought it in 2019 for a cross-country drive and still use it on my Z7ii - not only for landscapes, but indoors to get up close to my grandchildren.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography12 күн бұрын
It is so hard to beat a 70-200 f/2.8 for anything portrait related! Such a great lens for that. I still have a 70-200 2.8 that I use for portraits and events - won't leave home without that one for those types of photography! The biggest thing that keeps me from using it much for landscapes is the weight of a 2.8 and I start to feel like I am losing too much focal length on the long side versus the 100-400. (And two years ago I never thought I'd be here saying that!) Thanks for watching!
@russellyeley256112 күн бұрын

I agree with your love of the Nikon 100-400. I keep it on my Z7 II and the 24-120 F4 on My Z8. I keep both in my pack and usually use both to shoot a scene. I'll start with one first, whichever I think is best initially, and finish with the other. I consider myself a hybrid photographer, I like landscapes and animals and plan outings for both. I just got back from Iceland and used that setup extensively. The weather was pretty awful and the 100-400 stood the test of getting rain and snow soaked. If I had to pick my favorite between the 24-120 and 100-400, that's like asking if I like MOM or DAD better! I like both!

The reason the curtain doesn't come down is because the curtain is very fragile. I would rather have dirt on the sensor than on the curtain. In the case of the R5 it actually issues a warning about using that feature before you use it.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography14 күн бұрын
Yes - I've moved to more in support of a sensor shield than the shutter being closed during lens changes. In the meantime I've just gotten good at cleaning the sensor - and really, an air blower and one of those static brushes takes care of most cleaning situations. I didn't know the R5 had a warning! That is interesting to know!

Have you seen the FLM CP30-M5 (Hybrid) Tripod, I'm torn between that and the CP30-S4 II - Would love to know your thoughts on that? :)
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography15 күн бұрын
I've seen it - but haven't used it. They essentially found the in-between of the S4 and L4, but using 5 leg sections instead of 4. So that lets them get a little taller when extended and just a touch smaller when folded up. Because of the extra leg extension, the load capacity goes down a bit - but not enough to make a big difference for DSLR/Mirrorless. I am sure it is of the same quality as their other products - so should be good on that front. I think the big question is 5 leg extensions a downside for you or not. Hope that helps!

How about in video mode? I save my photo mode in U1 then save my video settings also in U1 but when going to photo mode it resets or overwrite
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography15 күн бұрын
I usually only have photo settings saved (I tend to record video on a different camera), but I just did a quick test using shutter speed and things seemed to work okay. For example, in photo mode I set my shutter speed to 1/400 and then switched video and set a shutter speed of 1/800 (yes - I know - unrealistic). I saved those to U3. Then I switched back to photo mode and my shutter speed went back to 1/400. Back to video and I was at 1/800. Then I changed the shutter speed faster in photo mode, switched to video, slowed the shutter down to 1/60. Then switched back and forth between photo and video and the settings stayed at what I set them. Then I turned the camera off and back on, and confirmed my U3 settings went back to the defaults I had set - 1/400 in photo mode, 1/800 in photo mode. Not sure why it isn't working for your settings. Wish I could be of more help!

I like the Large DSLR core unit in the X50, it is the one I use most often in the X50 v2. (I do tend to use the medium core unit in my Explore 35L). The large unit is handy if you are carrying a lot of lenses as you can typically find a spot for each of them. It will also let you configure it to carry the camera body with something like a 100-400mm without having to take the lens off. I like the DSLR core units instead of the Mirrorless because the DSLR one is a little taller, which means you can often put your lens in there vertically instead of horizontally maximizing efficient use of space. For example, I can put my 14-30 and 24-120 in vertically, as the core unit is tall enough. Shimoda has an option that comes with a kit - i.e. bag and core unit, but it is the medium core unit. If you want the bag and the large core unit, probably best to order the bag only option and then get the large core unit as well. Hope that helps!

Really like the FLM equipment. Picked up a tripod after seeing you using it. Then got one of their more robust taller ones and a monopod. The metal twist locks on the legs grew on me pretty quick-nice to know they won’t fall apart like rubber coatings will. I’ll take robust construction over the minor inconvenience of a chilly twist on cool days.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography25 күн бұрын
I am definitely a big fan of FLM gear. I just checked, I've had my CP30-S4 for just under 3 years now and it is still as good as new, despite me flying with it, regularly using it in rain, snow, southwestern desert landscapes and more. Everything functions just as it should. The rubber grips on things seem nice at first on tripods or heads that have them, but they always wear or lose their adhesive after being out in adverse conditions often enough. That has led me to prefer the metal knobs and twist locks for their long term durability. Thanks for watching!

If the lever is 'up' in the tightened position, does it hit the base of the camera if one were to tilt said camera? Or can the lever be re-positioned, as in 'pull it out and change the position on the shaft'? I, well, STRONGLY dislike the metal tripod leg knobs (the feel of them), but I begrudgingly use them because, yes, rubber self destructs. There you have it. Cheers!

I have this ball head, you can pull and re-position the lever if it’s in the way.

I did not ever have trouble with the lever getting in the way in the orientation I had it in the video. And you can pull the lever out a bit and reposition it should it ever be an issue (which is a very cool feature, I somehow missed when I was using it). I've just had so many knobs or twist locks with rubber on them start to fail after being out in the weather, I've come to prefer the metal versions of those for long term use.

For landscape photography, I prefer prime lenses on medium format or large format cameras and lenses. When shooting primes on 35mm small format cameras, I use: 14mm f/2.8 Nikkor 28mm f/2.8 Nikkor 55mm f/3/5 Nikkor macro 180mm f/2.8 Nikkor However, when I shoot zooms on 35mm small format cameras, I use: 14-24mm f/2.8 Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8 Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor Since I shoot landscapes, weddings, and action with my equipment, I do not use smaller and slower lenses for my small format shooting.
