I haven't used one of the power banks with the solar on it, but I do have a small portable solar panel, a Big Blue 28w foldable panel, that I've traveled with. I usually use it to power up the power bank and then the power bank to charge camera batteries.

I have a film cp30 m5 hybrid which is great. But I’m honestly looking for something really light for hiking. I mean really light. I currently am using a Sony a7cr and one lens 20-70 f4 zoom to cover everything. I’m just looking for something that will work and be lighter than my current setup. Do you have any recommendations? I don’t need the strongest or one that holds the heaviest camera since this Sony setup is around 2.2lbs. I mean something stable would be good for long exposures. I just want something for hiking, waterfalls and so on.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 9 күн бұрын
That's a tough one. My travel tripod is the FLM CP30-S4, but that isn't going to save you much of anything really. With my Nikon gear and liking to use the Nikon 100-400, finding that balance between weight of the tripod/head and portability/weight can be challenging. I have a small Benro tripod that I use for video that is pretty light (weighs 2.2lbs including the head that comes with it), but I wouldn't say it is the most stable tripod in the world, only has an 8.8lb load limit. I had to use it a few weeks ago in the Smokies as my stills tripod due to me breaking a ball head and it was not ideal. Maybe take a look at the Leofoto line of tripods? I don't own one, but have several friends that use their tripods with success. They also have a rather extensive line of tripods, they might have one that fits the right spot of being lightweight and still stable enough. Hope that helps!

The only problem I have with the Kirk LP-70 is that the ¼-20 holes are in the front. I carry my camera / lens on a BlackRapid crossbody strap so I need to attach that to the foot. (yes, I can and have attached the strap to the camera but that puts a lot of weight from the lens on the camera ring.) You can attach the strap connection to the front of the LP-70 and that works fine for carry but it does require that you install the lens on the Arca plate front to back. The LP-70 does have a QD connection and it's nearer to the back of the foot so if BlackRapid ever comes out with a QD connection for their straps, this would be a non issue. And if you already have a strap with a QD connection, there's plenty of room on the LP-70 to attach the lens back to front. The Leofoto NF-01 is similar in design but a little shorter and about ½ the price. However, it is even more problematic to use with both a ¼-20 strap attachment and an Arca Swiss plate because it's shorter. Interestingly, both the Leofoto and Kirk ads show the lens/camera hanging upside down from their respective feet but don't call attention to the fact that with the strap connection the way they show it, you would have to completely unscrew the strap connection from the foot each time you want to mount it on your tripod.

@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography One thing I'd like to understand better is the ability of LR vs PS with HDR processing. I used to use an app "Photomatix Pro" a few years ago before the dynamic range of newer sensors could handle high contrast scenes. Recently I've tried to bracket scenes and use "Photo Merge HDR" in LR. I've been disappointed and believe a single frame and adjustments are better. Is there something I'm missing? Have you used HDR processing in LR lately? Thanks for your consideration...
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 12 күн бұрын
As you noted, with today's sensors you can do a pretty amazing amount of work just with the dynamic range we have at our disposal. With that said, there are still those really high dynamic range scenes where exposure bracketing is really the best answer. I think ultimately, using luminosity masks in Photoshop to blend is probably the most precise way. Having said that, me, being a semi-lazy photographer will often use Lightroom's HDR blend with bracketed images. I find that it does okay getting you a decent starting point - though it is more conservative than some automated HDR blending tools (which can be a good thing to avoid being overdone), so often I still do additional edits, especially getting the highlights and shadows just right after the files are merged. If I can capture a scene in a single frame though, that's the my favorite way to go these days! Hope that helps!

I have the same ball head in the 52mm version (site rant: the whole world uses the metric system , only the USA stays with old europe middle ages inch, yard, pounds... 😉). Since 2 years now. And I bought this, because its an exact chinese copy of the three oder four times more expensive head of the American brand Really Right Stuff. I think, this American "luxury" gear brand comes into trouble because all the Chinese cheap brands produce the last years at the same high level with the same machines to form the metall. My ball head looks exact the same s in the first day. And I have a second panoramic plate above the ball under the arca Swiss plate. Very handy to use, if the underground is not very even. For panorama shots. I bought it for 100 € at amazon. Thanks for the review, and that the tension screw isn't there is for me not an issue.

The Tamron is by far the better lens. It is much sharper in every picture. I had a dilemma whether to go for the Nikon 24-200 or the Nikon 24-70f4 and the Tamron 70-300 and after this test, without a doubt the second option. I prefer to change the lens but have much better quality
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 16 күн бұрын
Over time I felt like the 24-200 and 70-300 were within the same ballpark of each other, each having their strengths and weaknesses at which focal lengths, apertures, and center vs. corner sharpness they were better at. Not really a bad choice to go either way. I did find myself wanting some form of stabilization more and more often and even wanting a longer focal length, so ultimately I moved to the Nikon 100-400. I still like Tamron lenses though! I still use a 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 that use the FTZ adapter for some event work. Super quality and workhorses!

Personally I'm holding out for Tamron to bring their 50-300 to the Z mount. I'd love to pair that with the 24-70 f/4 for a relatively lightweight setup with good reach and IQ. Seems to have a decent close focusing distance too.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 16 күн бұрын
It should be interesting if they do that. Tamron makes some good lenses, I have a 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 (f-mount) that I've used for several years and they are great. I had the 70-300mm from Tamron for the Z mount, it wasn't bad, missed the little bit of extra reach and no stabilization which hurt it a bit. But looks like the 50-300mm would have the stabilization and that little bit of extra on the wide-end would be nice! Close focusing distance would be another win for the lens.

If my gear fails, then it's telling me that either A it wasn't prepared or B it wasn't meant to be my day. The way I look at it is that if my tripod broke, I would then go to stabilisation in my camera. If my tripod failed, I would just shoot handheld. Why didn't you take the thread out and try and straighten the bolt or find a different bolt from your other tripod? Probably could've fitted in there the usually a universal size alright we just shoot handheld given that most of the modern cameras have stabilisation if you don't have stabilisation then yeah, that's an issue, but you just have to push your ISO. I can go down to half a second now. I would still be able to use the tripod and use a shutter release cable or the other solution you could've gone with is some tape and just tape the top of the tripod so it doesn't move. Always carry tape in my bag. You will break something sometimes including yourself. I've even taped a camera to a tripod because the bracket had broken and I was able to get the bracket half onto the plate and then I use some tape around the camera yep some good old gaffer tape and it worked really well. I've got the shots that I needed, always carry tape in your car and when I buy a tripod, I make sure I get a few extra screws with it and an extra ball head in the car as well but I'm very very prepared. I'm wondering, could you have the bullhead out in the tripod?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 19 күн бұрын
I definitely wasn't adequately prepared and found a flaw in my normal strategy! The bolt on the broken one doesn't seem to want to come out or get tighter. I tried to steal the ball head from my video tripod and put it on my FLM tripod, but while the head would screw on, because the FLM has a wider top platform, the mechanism to adjust the ball head and tighten it wouldn't turn freely, so I couldn't just keep my good FLM legs and use the head from the other one. I actually like that tape idea and shutter release - I had both duct tape in the 4Runner (always travel with duct tape!) and a shutter release in my camera bag. I wish I'd have thought of that option while I was out there! I guess tape would also work well to "repair" a tripod leg in a pinch as well - I think good tape has moved up my list a bit as a staple item! Wish I'd have had you with me out there - you've suggested a couple of things I didn't think to try in the field! Appreciate the thoughts!

Good advice on all fronts. I keep an older tripod in my van at all times, in case I walk out of the house without one of my preferred tripods, but I've never thought about a failure of the tripod or head. I think I'll start carrying a spare clamp in my bag that I can at least mount to the tripod in the event of a failure, though movement is limited. A clamp is cheap and doesn't take up much room. I use a quick change system from Leofoto - receiver to mount to the tripod, and plates to attach to the heads. It's really convenient for swapping out one head for another. I use a gimbal for long lens support and a ball head for short lenses. Quick and very secure. Anyway, it would be easy to attach a plate to a spare arca clamp. I might even get a cheap panning base and attach the clamp to that.

This seems a good solution for backup your SD card to a external ssd drive. I am hobbyist photographer and own a Nikon Z50 (great travel camera) as you know one SD card slot on the camera. So backing up my SD card to a ssd drive is a good idea. I have serval questions. My first question, while traveling for serval days or weeks, I would like to backup my photo daily (after the day of shooting), can I backup just the files I want to backup for each day? Second question I use a Window PC for my post editing, can I read the SSD drive photo files into my Window PC?
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 21 күн бұрын
Yes - you can backup just the files that are new, I've done that many times on multi-day trips where I am making multiple backups during the trip. You just have to select the files to copy, instead of using the Select All option to do so. (I usually just look at the dates to figure out what needs copied since the last backup). A lot of times, the backup SSD drive I use is formatted exFat which is readable by Windows as well. So I can backup from an iPad, but still read the files and import the files on a Windows machine. With that said, I would recommend a quick test just to be 100% sure - as my workflow is all Apple-based, but I am 99% sure as long as the SSD drive isn't formatted with an Apple file system, you will be good. Hope that helps!

It's not interesting for me for landscapes. It doesn't really offer anything that the Z6 or Z7 don't already offer plus I hate flippy screens. It's clearly aimed at video shooters which is fine. The best mirrorless I've tried for landscapes was probably the S1/S1R if only it wasn't so big and bulky. If they came out with a slimmed down S1 with maybe 32mp and everything else the same that would be perfection.

I could probably forgive a flippy screen, though I prefer just a 2-way tilt like the Z8 has. That way awkward low or high portrait composed shots would be a little easier to see the screen. I have a GX85 and G9, but have not tried the S1/S1R, maybe I'll need to check one out!

The depth of field is the exact same as full frame … the confusion arises because of the crop sensor. Hang an Apple on a string take a photo with a full frame camera then a Micro 4 thirds camera with the same focal length and aperture but don’t change positions of each camera you’ll get the same depth of field. A classic example is a head and shoulders shot with say a 50mm lens on a full frame camera and then a M4T camera with a 50 mm lens with same f stop but having to move back because of the crop factor on the M4T camera thus changing depth of field.

Hi. I am a little confused. When you have a 67 mm lens. You still need to step-up to 82 (lets assume that is the filter size) with the step-up ring and can not use the inlay correct? So the in-lay is only for lens of the same thread size and still can not be used with a step-up setup? - so vignetting still possible
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography 29 күн бұрын
Correct - you cannot use the step-up ring with the inlaid adapter. The inlaid adapter is for the lens of the same thread-size. When using just an adapter ring, it adds some depth to the end of lens, which in and of itself doesn't vignette - but when you add a filter, it also adds depth to the end of the lens and then introduces vignetting on wide focal lengths with wide angle lenses. Whereas the step-up ring adds some initial depth, but not to the point of introducing vignetting. And when you attach the filter, because it is bigger than the diameter of the end of the lens, the wide focal length is still just shooting through the filter glass, not the physical edges of the filter. Hard to explain in text! I will say - most of the filter companies I know say if you don't want any vignetting, use a step-up ring to avoid it. Happy to try to answer any questions - as I'm not sure I've done a good job of explaining!

I'm surprised you used the Canon RP as the bar - it has 2x+ the MP of the camera I came back to landscape photography with and I believe my most sold print was off of that camera! NEED 45MP, no. But, I will admit having it with the Z7II is useful for two reasons - First, it lets me be a little more aggressive with my cropping which is a nice luxury - especially if taking a safety shot where I might shoot a little wider, knowing I have the pixels to work with. Second, Ive been printing more and more on metals for gallery shows and such, it is nice to have the extra MP for metal prints, which are a little less forgiving than a fine art paper or canvas print. But NEED - no, you don't NEED 45MP. Thanks for the comment!

I also have the Sherpa roof rack and wondering how you mounted Pelican cases to it. Also, did you say you put 2 adapt plates together for your platform? If so, were you still able to use the bolts that came with it from Sherpa Thanks.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography Ай бұрын
For the Pelican Case install, I drilled through the cases (4 holes per case, 2 to the front, 2 to the back). I used Sherpa bolts and nuts and also used a 1.5" fender washer and rubber washer (this was more for preventing water from getting in). It has worked out really well, the cases stay dry even in long drives in the rain and everything has stayed tight. I did use 2 of the Mini (12") adapt plates, but they aren't stacked, they are next to each other. So the platform for me to stand on is 12" from front to back and 24" wide. Just enough to get my feet on them, without feeling like I'm "balancing" up there. SInce I didn't stack them, I was still able to use the Sherpa bolts to attach the plates as well. I shoot HH a lot, and often with a 3.7kg telephoto. A good technique is to stand almost side-on to the subject, bring your left hand up to hold your right shoulder, left arm raised parallel to the ground, and rest the whole rig on the resulting 'platform'. Brace, force the eye-piece hard against your eye, fire a burst. Also works well when you're down on one knee. I also find using a monopod unextended with the bottom end wedged into my jacket pocket is pretty stable. And yeah... two bodies if tripod shooting or to avoid lens changes at a beach or a windy and dusty environment. Nice vid - cheers.

I find your videos insightful, easy to follow along, not loaded with unnecessary technical jargon and not too long.

Thank you - glad it was helpful! I have several videos on different types and brands of filters. I've been using the MAVEN filters most recently, but there of course lots of brands out there. Some of those videos might be helpful as well. Thanks for watching!

Another excellent video. I shoot handheld most of the time but plan to start bringing along a tripod on certain hikes. Yesterday, with a hurricane approaching, it was very challenging holding the camera steady so I cranked up the shutter speed. Since I wasn't hiking I was able to brace myself against my car, a sign post and later sit on a rock. Eventually the wind won out and I packed up to wait for a better day.

Thanks! Oh wow! Those sound like some crazy conditions! Bracing against something sturdy can definitely help! But hurricane force winds are a different story! Glad you made it home safe!

Excellent video. Your explanation how to use the Tone Curve is the best I've come across but, like you, I'll probably use masking most of the time.

Glad it was helpful! Tone curves can be super powerful. If you want an in-depth, and well explained tone curve video, check out my friend and fellow KZbinr Michael Rung's Tone Curve video. One of the better ones I've seen! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2azd6ernsaUo9ksi=SUg53IdlVstS-EfU

great video… I’m trying to follow it. I’m good up to the “tap here and choose paste”. I’m not finding anything that will allow me to paste. I’m apparently missing something important you’re saying.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography Ай бұрын
To get to paste it is a press and hold, so in that empty folder, press and hold inside of the folder and you should get a context menu that pops up that will let you choose Paste. Hope that helps!

@@JeffreyTadlockPhotography thank you so much! I am leaving Tuesday for Tanzania, and am madly trying to figure out how to accomplish all this stuff I should have started a month ago. Your video is wonderful, and I’ll practice the next couple days. Thanks so much ~ Jill

I so much miss the U1-3 on the Z8. The custom banks in that camera are not saved, so when I change them during use they stay changed.

Oh! I didn't know that - haven't tried out a Z8 yet. I agree - that would be annoying.

What's your overall impression after a year of using the X50 v2 over your old explore 35 v2? I'm looking at getting the smaller x40 v2 or the Explore 35 v2 to complement my X70 HD and I'm torn on which one would work best.
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography
@JeffreyTadlockPhotography Ай бұрын
The bag itself (the X50) is a great bag, pretty much my standard carry for regional trips or when there is not going to be a flight involved. The Explore 35L is bag I carry for flying and it really is a pretty great size for that. Even with my video and audio gear, I can still fit everything I want/need to take. If I was to only have one bag, I feel like the 40L is the sweet spot. Small enough to fly with, but big enough for those cold weather days where you might want extra layers to either put on or store when you shed layers. Happy to answer any other questions - I don't think you can go too far wrong with either of the choices you are looking at.

@@JeffreyTadlockPhotographythank you for the quick reply! Also, love your recent videos from Hocking Hills and the Columbus area Metropark testing the 28-400mm lens. My wife has been asking about a little more reach over the Tamron 70-300 without using my 180-600mm lens (way too cumbersome for her liking).

@@timothymcdaniel7372 Glad you've liked the 28-400mm videos! It is a pretty great all-around, versatile lens. I just took it (and my 14-30mm) on an Arizona trip back in June. I had the Tamron 70-300mm and ended up selling it, the 28-400mm with its VR felt like a better all-around lens, with the bonus of some extra reach. It does hit that f/8 mark pretty quick, but for landscape photography I don't find that very problematic.

I do it with the lens detached when updating camera body firmware.

Definitely interesting concept and discussion. I definitely find that I learn the most from my "bad" photos and I find that when I go back and look through raw photos from an older shoot, my opinion about which is better has changed and I wonder why I never edited this photo or that. Thanks for the video!

Glad you liked the video! And I agree, I think there is a lot to be learned from the "bad photos" if one takes the time to think about the bad ones, why is it bad, what didn't work, etc - all things you can change or look at differently in the field. I've had my tastes shift overtime as well. Another reason I hate to say there is a one true way, and more what is working now or what are my thought now! Thanks for watching!

Yes - the static brush is reusable. You can use the blower after you clean it to also get any small dust particles off the brush.

I like your attitude, there's no right or wrong answer, it's a personal choice. It's good to see someone else's thought process. I particularly appreciate your emphasis on separation of the feature you want to highlight. That one thought is easy to overlook when your view is the "whole world". Small details can be very interesting. Thanks for taking your time to share your thoughts. (I also like the other side of the river!)

I try to avoid any “one true way” approach to photography, it is such a creative endeavor that I feel like people should be free to explore and not be stuck with some sort of rules. I of course am happy to share my opinion on things, but not approach it as if my way is the right way, it is just one viewpoint. I agree that small details can be quite interesting! It has taken me quite sometime to start seeing them and even now, it takes some concentration and deliberate approach to find them! Can’t believe it took me so long to visit the other side of the river! Definitely my favorite side now! Thanks for watching!
