Like many Gen Xers, I saw Carpenter's The Thing as a kid when it hit home video and was completely blown away by it. 13 years old to be exact. However, as kids we didn't have a voice back then. Then came the rise of the internet with its chat rooms and message boards. By the mid-90s it was becoming clear just how much of an impact the movie had on our generation.

16:12 see, this is a really big part of it. The special effects of the good Thing dont look nearly as insane in full lighting. Its like Jaws - not being able to see the full thing makes it scarier, partially because pf the unknown and partially because most places irl arent perfectly lit. If they used that same trick with the cgi itd at least be tolerable.

I like 2 and 3 and not ashamed to admit it. Are they as good as the original? Of course not, but they are fun and there are other franchises with muuuch worse sequels. Part 4 does really suck bad though! No defending that one.

The first Jaws was scary because it didn’t show the shark a lot which allowed the viewers to fill in the gaps with their imagination. For example, the first shot in the film didn’t even show the shark, yet it’s still horrifying to this day! It’s not the shark that’s scary, it’s the one you can’t see

True facts, when I was teaching English in Japan, I had to make picture flash cards for adjectives. A party for "fun," a museum of "interesting," etc. I used a picture of the xenomorph for "scary" because I literally could not think of anything more appropriate.

I enjoyed this movie when it stuck to being a well-paced story focused on regular people pitted against the horrors of the Alien universe. It lost momentum with detours into groan-worthy call backs, recycled plot beats and a jagged ending that betrayed its strong start. It is a well made movie and a step up from most post-Aliens franchise offerings. Overall, three stars out of five

Jaws 2 is better than you give it credit for. Your review kinda sucks. You need a new perspective or anti depressants. 3 is good for 3D but not much else and the fourth doesn’t exist in my world. It’s an Ellen Brody fever dream at best.

I'll never get past the fact that the Child's Play franchise of all things is not only still relevant, but also only had a couple of missteps in over 35 years. That's WILD for a series about a legally distinct My Buddy doll possessed by voodoo.

Its going to age really badly, everything you say up until 2:26 is perfectly fine, it looks great , the acting isnt anything better than Prometheus, they get shown up by a dodgy CGI Ian Holm and Holms character inclusion pretty much saves the film in terms of turning into an actual Alien film by contrasting the acting but then it soon becomes clear that its a collage of bits of the other films, nothing is original, all the storyline is made up of bits of the other films. Romulus should be a new album but instead its a remix of material from past albums if that makes sense. Thats why it will age badly beyond its flaws, but its exacerbated by the facepalm moments. In the beginning they show Romulus grabbing a space rock, its revealed (bad idea so early on) that the Alien is attached to the rock. CGI Holm "Rook" explains that they went looking for the original Alien that Ripley ejected into space.... looking for an Alien floating around in space.... despite them knowing where the planet was and Ashs reports of Alien life there ... despite them not knowing that Ripley had ever ejected an Alien into space as its set before Aliens.... And then the Alien somehow survives in space attached to a rock even though a pulse rifle will kill it, a little bit of insight into HOW it couldve survived wouldve gone a long way but they didnt bother. Next blunder was how quickly the Aliens developed, the encounter with the facehugger is where the film goes from being promising and full of potential to becoming garbage, the facehuggers latch onto various crew but are apparently shaken off or thwarted just by turning their head to the side despite the film clearly showing the facehugger fully attached frontally. Then one does attach like it should and we get a scene that looks like the one in Alien where the crew try to figure out how to save her while the android warns them about the Alien, they freeze the tail and it falls off which is neat and then the android tells them their friend has a 60% chance of death which makes you think ok now we have a race against time to find a way to save this character who only has about a day to live Nope... about 4 minutes later an Alien is already chestbursting, the facehuggers incubation and time it takes for an Alien to develop is completely ignored, skipped and disgraced. Then we see Cocoons for some reason where larger versions of the Alien is coming out of.... despite the Alien supposedly being exactly the same one as in the first film where none of that ever happens. One of the unlikeable crew dies from acid after killing one of the aliens in the cocoon... theres also now multiple cocoons suddenly. This scene couldve been done well but its botched in execution. The android that follows the main character around has been widely praised for his acting but its really just the contrast between when he gets the data disc from the other one, its a clear difference but the first presentation of his android isnt really like an android and its supposed to be set inbetween the first two movies, either its a super advanced emotionally connected android in the midst of a slave planet full of low tech or its bad acting ,probably why they felt the need to reveal the android in the first 2 minutes of the film (another terrible choice) else nobody wouldve believed it, the acting that wouldve led up to the reveal would not have paid off. He then starts acting much more like an android with the new disc, forgets everything and has no capacity for caring like he did before which basically proves that the acting before that moment was just bad and playing on autistic characteristics instead of android ones which is a dick move. The Aliens look good but are not scary because they sit there and wait for an entire cutscene to happen before trying to attack crew, for such an advanced organism that can survive space they are remarkably obedient when it comes to cutscenes and "Hi Im an Alien let me just go raaaa and pose for a bit before doing anything intelligible" moments. Its not so dreadful but it couldve been so much better, its truly a watered down 15 version of a film that couldve been scary. Arguably worse than AvP, certainly nothing on the first 4 films. Watch Alien 3 afterwards and it seems like a masterpiece with actually good acting destroying any copium that was praising anything in Romulus. Better than Prometheus and maybe Covenant because its paced well and has a lot of action, but it will age very badly. Fede Alvarez is NOT an artist

There weren’t 2 cocoons in the scene you’re referencing, there was only the one he tried to electrocute, but the Alien survived, hence the tail coming out of the cocoon and taking out his eye. Also, that specific Xeno had damage on his head/face from the attempt at electrocution. I think that possibly some of the scenes were edited in a manner that made them a little hard to follow… also, too dark to make out what’s happening at times. But, all in all, I enjoyed it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

İ think it was fine. A solid 6. The cgi felt like i was watching a Doom 3 cut scene and when... That line was said my audience clapped which got a laugh out of me. i don't think it had enough sci-fi for the scifi crowd and too low of a body count for the horror crowd. Good tension and suspense. The two main characters were great even though the rest of the cast wasn't. Loved the practical effects.

I enjoyed this movie. There were a lot of callbacks that I didn’t see coming. The sets looked great. The couple of things I found silly were the “get off her, you bitch” line didn’t make sense with it not being a queen. And the last xenomorph doing the face to face with her, like in Alien 3, didn’t make sense as Rain didn’t have an alien inside her. (Plus, Andy the android? Really?) But the gore was great. The finale was great. It did what I wanted.
