Great video. At the start you mentioned that the cranks had some anodized coating to protect the aluminium, which you removed during the process. Would these cranks now corrode if they were to be used?
@BuffsVintageBikes25 күн бұрын
If you rode in the wet constantly and neglected them then yes, they’ll eventually corrode but then so will anodized cranks. If you keep an eye on them and clean your bike regularly then no, you won’t have a problem at all. I hand polish mine every 6 months or so. I’ve got some sets that are over 4 years old and still look beautiful and shiny ✨

0:48 that's not from dropped chain, that crank has been rubbing against the frontderailleur's cage; most likely due to poor alignment/clearance.

I guess that’s also a possibility 👍🏼

Wonderful episode. A friend has found one for me in British Columbia. It came all the way from Freiburg Germany and is blue. It has the “stepped” head lug and red head logo. Early 60s touring machine is likely a UO8? Inspired by your workmanship I look forward to its arrival. Thank you.😊

Found a bit of a bran find...a Terry Dolan race bike with all aluminum parts, wheels hubs, spokes, frame, calipers, cranks, pedals, 52T chainring and aluminum derailleur...was thinking of stripping the frame and anodizing...might accent some of the accessories too.... your vid was great

Hey thanks for this. I'm 48 and a bit of a beginner also here in Cape Town. I've been using a loaned aluminium mountain bike - a bit small for me - to get around. Now I'm planning to get an inexpensive road bike that's a bit zippier (and bigger) and I've been thinking about getting a decent '80s steel bike. I really feel the appeal of the comfortable ride (along with the great looks of course). This really reassures me that a vintage road bike will do fine on good dirt roads and tracks as well as tar, even if I can't fit wide tyres. My only remaining reservation is dealing with the hills without it being a slog. The gearing on these old bikes seems a bit hardcore for where I'm at currently.

Nowadays the gear ratio issues can be overcome by fitting a derailleur hanger extender which then allows you to run a larger ratio on the rear (maybe 34 tooth) without having a gear changing issue on the short cage rear derailleurs.

The new clear coat over the decals is an improvement over the original Benottos, which had the decals laid on top of the clear.

Wonderfully done! The decals provide a slightly modern flourish, but still honor the zeitgeist of the originals. Tanti Auguri!

Sorry to hear of your accident, hope you weren’t injured at all. I unfortunately don’t have the paint code. Before painting, I took the bike into my local paint supply store and they colour matched the paint for me. Yes, the black has a metallic speckle in it 👍🏼

Nice video!! One question: Do you treat the inside of the frame tubes? If so, how do you do it, and when is it necessary? Thanks for posting a new video!
@BuffsVintageBikes5 ай бұрын
Thank you. The only time I treat the inside of the tubes is if I remove the BB or Seat Post and find a lot of rust. Generally SA is a pretty dry country so it’s not a big issue here. I use a product called NS1 Rust Buster and inject it into the frame using a syringe. Then block off the tubes and swirl it around to make sure it covers everything. It neutralizes rust to a blue/black hard film. Any excess can just be wiped off without damaging the paint.
