Great, exactly what I was looking for, the historic places. . . planning this trip for next year's travel.

I'm highly interested in attempting to bicycle the entirety of route 20 from Boston to the Pacific. I stumbled upon this video. This is very well done!

I just found a business card in my dad’s things for Plaag’s Tourist Cabins, US Route 20, Carlisle NY. It shows they sold gas, had a repair shop, and a luncheonette. It’s dated 1953.

Route 20 passes through Chatta-Kway-Uh county as it exits NYS, and that county is right to the west of "Cattaraugus" county, pronounced "Cat county" (which does not have Rt 20). (Truthfully, though, "Chatauqua" is pronunced by us locals as sh'TAW-kwa, and "Cattaraugus" is kat-uh-RAW-gus)

Good thing them folks in "Ah-von" don't say "Ay-von," which was once the California Perfume Co. and built a factory in Suffern, NY. And no, it's not "Sufferin'."

Thomas MacDonald (directed Bureau of Public Roads/FHA from 1919 to 1953) was one of the Great US bureaucrats of the 20th century. [On par with J. Edgar Hoover, Harry Anslinger, and Elwood Mead.]

Hallo, Dutch speaker, here. Rensselaer is actually pronounced Renss-e-LARE. The modern spelling is Rensselaar. Long "A". I have many happy memories from the 50s and 60s of Route 20 ( Cherry Valley Turnpike). I'm really enjoying your videos.

From the early 50s until the mid-60s I would go every summer with my parents to Sharon Springs. We stayed mostly in the Empire Hotel, but often at the Columbia, as well. Watching these videos, all I seem to see are the empty spaces. It's sad. Thanks.

I'm well familiar with Rt 9 and the abandoned section of road, although I didn't know it was originally Rt 20. I asked Mass. DOT if they'd put a marker up. After all, it's one of the few (only?) surviving sections of original highway from the 1920's highway building boom. Unfortunately, my request must have quickly found the circular file. Thank you for sharing this video and a peek into our highway past

@@HistoricUSRoute20 And by the way, I know this is about US 20, but you should explore a nearby section of the Boston Post Road. Almost across the street from where you were standing is West Brookfield Rd, which quickly becomes Foster Hill Road. There are many historic markers in the fields up top of the hill. It's really fascinating. Jedediah Foster lived here and was one of the writers of the Mass. Constitution, a precursor and model for the US constitution.
