Kure was once the site of a USCG LORAN station. I had the privilege going there on an inspection from the district HQ in Honolulu in 1986. Beautiful lagoon. A tough ride in a C-130 then. LORAN no longer exists since GPS.

I was born and raised on the shores of lake Superior and hunted, fished camped the boundary water canoe area . Nothing is as beautiful as seing the full moon coming up over lake Superior.

My family is from Michigan's UP (upper peninsula). We spend a lot of time with Lake Superior which is classified as an inland sea. The water is extremely cold even in summer but kids do go in to swim.

In the treaty ending, World War II, Japan did not give Taiwan to anyone. They simply renounced their claims to any sovereignty over Taiwan or the Pescadores (Penghu). The Ch’ing family had already renounced their claims to the islands in 1895. The Powers who had defeated Japan (especially the United States) therefore had to decide what to do with Taiwan and the Pescadores. The USA gave administrative control over the islands to the Republic of China, but noted in doing so that the question of the sovereignty of Taiwan and the Pescadores would need to be determined in accordance with the values of the United Nations at some future date.
