Thoughts from the Class of 2020: My Unforgotten Graduation

I'm also class of 2020, but in lieu of a real graduation ceremony, my school (UC Berkeley) hosted a virtual one in Minecraft. Some CS guys built a replica of the campus and then a few hundred people logged into the server to get "diplomas" (Minecraft books with some text in them), which were handed out by our chancellor. After that ridiculous experience, I felt no need to go back for our make-up ceremony. Good channel btw.

Me and one of my brothers are 2 years apart. He was class of 2019, and I was class of 2021. While I was only a Junior at the time, I can fully empathize with the Seniors who missed out on their (for the most part, your event was special) once in a lifetime graduation ceremony, and just waited until their diploma came in the mail at the end of May when the event would've taken place. At the time, it honestly felt like the lockdowns would never end. It felt like this was our new reality, just being stuck in doors all day. But despite that crushing feeling, those 4 months my state had us all on Lockdown for were the best 4 months of my life. I'm a very asocial person, so it's not like I had any real friends to miss hanging out with regardless. Plus I had gotten my first PC literally a week before the Lockdown, so I just spent that entire summer gaming my life away. I racked up hundreds of hours in games like Garry's Mod and Hearts of Iron. Shit was mad fun. And even thought I must publicly state I don't want it to happen again, _a small part of me actually wants it to happen again._ I made so many fun memories during Covid, and it's just a little melancholy watching it all fade away as we have to transition back to a normal life now. But it is what it is. At least now I have good stories to tell my friends and family as the years go by.

Getting a chance to unwind is always helpful, though I can see how you wouldn't want a global disaster to need to happen for it. It was really a unique experience for sure though.

I was high school class of 2020. We had our graduation in a football stadium, with 5 schools after us. So our ceremony was somewhat rushed and we weren’t given proper time to sing our school song at the end.
