I don’t have a preference for magnets. It is a subtle difference and those pickups were wound pretty standard, not over-wound much at all.

Wondering when KORG/VOX or whoever owns VOX this minute, will build a handwired made in England again? Boy. They sure have something against THAT. (NOTE: People buy Matchless and Z and Bad Cat all the time.) This amp, BTW, does sound really good. Just not a fan of giving VIet Nam any business.

I’m always hesitant to answer technical questions on amps, especially when it comes to draining filter caps. Anyone, regardless of experience, runs a significant risk each time they work on amps. There are different ways of draining the filter caps and some amps have a circuit to dissipate that voltage. It’s also good practice to always check the caps with a meter to be sure, before doing anything to it. For me, working on amps hasn’t been a simple or natural thing. It’s been a long process of reading, studying and trying to make sense of it all to get to this point. There are some great channels with technical information. Search “Uncle Doug”. He has so many great and informative videos and is a retired teacher. Has a great way of explaining stuff. Thanks for the comment!

Yep it is possible to get the frets hot as heck pretty quick. Hard felt wheels do it the fastest in my experience. These foam ones from Amazon weren’t as bad because they’re softer. Thanks for the comment 👍

Thank you for a great video. I have a 90's Fender Blues Jr. Green pcb the tubes were changed to 2-EL 84's and 3-ECC 83 S Are these tubes a good replacement for the stock tubes? Thanks for any help you can give. Greetings from Greenville, NC.
@bbmade
@bbmade 3 ай бұрын
Those will work fine. The big issue with Blues Juniors and most modern amps utilizing EL84’s is the bias. Most are biased too hot. On Blues Juniors this will degrade the solder pads on the circuit board. Any good shop is well aware of the issue and can fix it.

I’ve got an E series MIJ 57 strat. According to Fender USA it’s an 84-87. The serial number starts E9. This would suggest it’s an 89. The serial number is on the back of the neck near the neck pocket, not the headstock. When I took the guitar apart, the date on the neck heel is 4-14-89 !
@bbmade
@bbmade 3 ай бұрын
I’m no expert on Fender serial numbers off the top of my head. I do know that era was a bit chaotic for them as new ownership was acquiring the company. There is a pinned comment with a lot of great information on one of my earlier “E-series” strat videos as I misspoke in the video early on.

Is there a difference between a USA Blues Deluxe and a MIM Blues Deluxe ?
@bbmade
@bbmade 5 ай бұрын
I don’t recall what circuit revisions may have been made between USA made and made in Mexico. I don’t think there are major differences. Typically, when a company makes revisions to a circuit, it is to address issues or make it better. Over all of guitar amp history, that’s not necessarily the case in terms of making it better (mid-60’s Fender amps compared to mid-70’s Fender amps). If a person is in the market for one of these amps, I wouldn’t hold out for a USA made one and I wouldn’t pay more for it just because it was made in America. I would want to know if it has the original filter caps and what sort of work has been done to it over the years.

A lot of variations in the MIJ E Series. Have one with hardtail. Serial number is approximately 2000 numbers higher. Stamped string trees, Fender Fender stamped on bridge pieces. Decal is under the finish. MADE IN JAPAN is at base of neck on back side. White plastic 5-way switch. Same codes on pots.ST-462 stamped on neck.

From 1 tech to another great video. I especially like the component schematic thumbnails that appear on screen with values as you're changing them. I recently had a Hot Rod Deville 212 (pr247) with missing plate voltage on V1b. Went through the amp completely, replaced resistors & other components open &/or out of range ect. Still no voltage on pin 6 of V1b. Noticed mods & that it had been hacked on before, had voltage on 1 side of plate resistor but not the other. Resistor was good & it seemed I had continuity in all the correct pathways until I took some ohm readings and shining my LED light behind the PCB to find a damaged trace, a gift from the previous wanna be tech. Repaired the trace & boom full signal, full plate voltage on pin6 V1b, Bias'd the amp now she sounds great. Anyway thanks for the video BBmade, I am now a subscriber keep the uploads comin brother

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Sounds like you did a great job on that amp. It’s amazing what we see that other people have done to an amp. I recently put up a KZbin Short on a butchered vintage Super Reverb chassis. Sometimes people understand amp theory and want to mod something before they ever learn how to use a soldering iron. Other times, someone knows how to use a soldering iron and suddenly think they are qualified to work on amps. All we can do is try our best to do right by the customer and amplifier. 👍

If the hole is a little bit larger that should be fine. Once you snug the nut and washer down, add the small set screw on the back (if it has one) the tuning machine should be fine.

I can’t remember what show it was it might have been 1000 ways to die, but a guy was stranded and one of his fuses blew in his truck. He had no fuses but in his glove box there was a 22 long rifle round. That fit, so he popped it in and went on his way. Later down the road the bullet got hot and went off hitting him in the leg. The man in my story and the man who modified this amp might be the same person. I almost expected to see a 22lr round when you opened that fuse holder. Yikes

Great comment. Yeah, he basically tried to turn it into a single channel amp with footswitchable boost, tons of eq type switches, added an effects loop, switchable negative feedback, some sort of bias control and three master volumes and a presence control. The attempt was so advanced and he hadn’t even learned to properly solder. Some wires twisted together, wrapped in electrical tape without solder. No cover on the high voltage filter caps. It was insane. Beyond ruining a vintage amp, he seemed to try and electrocute himself.

A Fender Hotrod Deluxe is not supposed to be completely noiseless, am I right ? Mine has somewhat of a hum when the guitar is not playing.
@bbmade
@bbmade 8 ай бұрын
Yes there’s a certain noise floor an amp will have whether you have the guitar turned all the way down or not. If you stop playing but have the guitar volume up the amp will have noise from the pickups coming through and if they are single coils, it can be quite noisy.

Which one of the pre amp tubes is v1?
@bbmade

It depends on the amp. V1 is the first preamp tube furthest from the power tubes generally speaking. On a Hot Rod Deluxe it is the the furthest to the right if you are looking at the back of the amp.

When I use humbuckers (14.7 ohm) the volume increaases and the tone is not so clean. So I try in the jack number 2 which is for a more strong signal instrument, but it loses high frequencies. I was concerned with mine being a little noisy, but I heard yours sound similar even you have changed a lot of old components and using humbuckers. Its nice to know that. Thank you for your demo.
@bbmade
@bbmade 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I was standing right next to the amp with lights all around me so it probably made it a little more noisy. This video was quite a few years ago so the work isn’t fresh in my mind. I wouldn’t be overly concerned with a little bit of noise. If it makes noise with you turn the controls the pots could need cleaning or a coupling cap might be letting a little DC through which is worth having it looked at.

what are you switching in the back of the amp while playing?
@bbmade
@bbmade 11 ай бұрын
I made the ground switch a variable negative feedback switch since the ground switch was no longer needed. It is a “mod” that can easily be taken out since nothing was permanently changed. It was subtle and doesn’t come across in the video (to my ears) the same way it was in the room.

Shielding can help. If you want to do it yourself the conductive paint works pretty well. I’d clean the cavities with some compressed air, brush and vacuum out any debris. Brush on 2-3 coats of shielding paint and then put foil on the underside of the pickguard and a piece of of foil from the wall of the cavity to front of the body so it will contact the foil on the pickguard.
