As the saying goes..." It takes courage to own a courage"..lol. I have two 20 HP engines that are done. First one had the bad casting and has a hole in the block just like the one you have, and the other caught on fire and burned up the engine. The oil fires are usually caused be the bolts coming loose under the flywheel and oil starts to get flung around and onto the muffler. I noticed the engine you are using has a lot of sludge on the top. Check all your block bolts under that flywheel just incase some have come loose. Great video and we'll see you in the next one.
@wrenchwranglers7 күн бұрын
After I shot the video I discovered the valve cover seal was bad, which is where the grime appears to have come from in this case. Although there was a lot of it on the old frame too. I will check those bolts also, thank you for noting that!

Okay. I've been working on small engines for over 30 years. Either no one is giving you good advice. Or you're not accepting it. When it comes to starters if it has a metal flywheel gear. The starter will always use a plastic gear. If it has a plastic gear on the flywheel. It will use a metal gear on the starter. That is the way all of them are made. Jumping cables are the fastest way to burn up a starter on anything including a car. They waste a lot of power. All you need is a good charge battery. An the older starter would have worked well. I hope you're not trying to mislead people. You do not sound like the kind of person that would do that. So I do wish you the best of luck. And truly hope you do not mind taking some friendly advice. From someone who knows. 💯.
@wrenchwranglers8 күн бұрын
I should have clarified that plastic starter gears are used with plastic ring gears or aluminum ring gears. Steel starter gears are only used with steel ring gears.

Take this guy and experience with a grain of salt. His work bench is his truck tailgate. The valves need to be adjusted every 250 hours on a Briggs and Stratton. They do not "always keep going out of adjustment." The starter back bolt can be accessed and removed and replaced, without "doing all kinds of things.".

@wrenchwranglers9 күн бұрын
It’s behind the tractor on the top right side of the 3-point hitch housing. The tank is built into the top of the 3-point. The operator station platform extends back over it, so it’s not as easy to access as it could be, but it’s still possible to remove the cap and get a funnel in if you’re careful.

The very first thing I do with any mower I get is spend 10 mins adjusting the valves. As well as check the valve travel to monitor for wear on camshaft lobes. Then I worry about carb and starting it.

That is a very sound procedure. Usually by the time I get an engine it’s so worn out that correct procedures are an afterthought lol.

You should never jump a starter at the positive nut on a starter that will damage the nut with the load sparkling on it. Leave the positive connected an use the negative to make or break connection that way you will not damage the starter nut. 😮

I had the same problem with my Cub this past spring change the starter solonoid,the starter ( they both were probably fine,) and fix a flat on new tires. And found out the valves were out of adjustment and the battery was 6 years old about. I mean it ran fine last season when i put it back in the garage but would not start this spring or last fall to take care of the leaves didn't Start so i didn't mess with the snow blower for it. ( only paid 200 bucks for it it was used one time works perfectly) now i need to build a rear weight rack for it, it would also help the agro tires bite in better i had snow chains year round on it. My yard has 2 steep hills.

Have you looked at wheel weight options? I’ve had a few lawn tractors with wheel weights and they make a considerable difference since the weight is right there on the drive wheels.

If I do not mow, the grass gets too high and it’s annoying to work in it. More insects hide there and we have fire ants that will get out of control. But mostly it will just grow too high create other maintenance issues. There are no fines here for not mowing, but if I do not it will soon swallow my cars and trailers. The type of grasses we have here will get very high.

@wrenchwranglers15 күн бұрын
The arms and blades appear to be interchangeable. It’s the longer/shorter drive shafts that the arms mount to protruding out of the cowl that’s important. As long as you switch the drive assembly it works. The old ones have to be short to fit under the hood, and the newer ones have to be long enough to stick through the cowl. Those aren’t interchangeable. The right one has to be used with the right hood/cowl.

That surge at low idle is the pilot jet. A lot of times the Chinese carbs have too small of a idle jet I've found. You can either drill it out a very little bit or take one off of one of the original carbs and clean it up and put it in the new carburetor and I think you'll have it fixed. Great video!

That is good info. I’ve encountered this before with these cheap carbs, and usually ended up just living with the surge.
