Some professional screenwriters use the phrase "in the trenches" to describe working in Los Angeles. Social networks and support groups only come after surviving a few battles or wars. Hourly jobs don't count. The uniforms out there are a different type and easily confused with fashion. 🪖 Rollaíonn fíorshaighdiúirí a súile.

I love your story, because i do relate to it. Things that brought me here turned to be absolutely fake, and things that mattered were never a thing i thought about when coming here, like Koreatown, however this city is build on abuse, fake promises and gramur with very dark side of it. There are a lot of successful and beautiful people. But for early 20s it really is not it, trust me

I'm sad you didn't find your people here. Been here 3 years and I've found really amazing people who are just working and living. Both native and transplants. It took probably 2 years to really settle in, make friends and actually do stuff outside of work. Those first 2 years or so, all I did was work and go home 😭 but I knew everything would work out. It's definitely a place you can learn a lot about yourself but I think people have to get away from moving to LA and only thinking about living there being like in the movies. There are everyday, hardworking people here that do just work and mind their business. They have a 9-5 but might be singers, dancers, actors or whatever on the side. I will say being around other creative people is one of my favorite things about living here. Best advice I'd give is to find a job before moving or within 2 months of moving (with savings) and get to know the city through coworkers first or join some kind of class to meet people. Take frequent walks, go to the beach, flea markets, museums, visit different surrounding areas, etc. you can meet a lot of different people that way..... there's more to LA than West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Hollywood and DTLA. I wish more people knew that. Anyway, LA has been my only big girl move so I know adjusting to any city will take time. There's pros and cons everywhere you go but doing your research is key! Good luck to anyone moving to a new city soon!

Hi there! Let me first say that I'm an LA native. I'm used to it here lol. I was lucky enough to be born near the beach--we're not rich-- but I'm from a middle class home, 15 mins from the beach. My favorite thing about LA is the cool, moderate weather year long. That's heaven to me. Snow and ice are horrifying, and I hate the heat and humidity of other states. So Southern CA is perfect weather imo. *Only* within the past 10 years, has LA gotten crazy, expense. But still, LA isn't really any different than any place else-- If-- you're secure enough to not follow trends, to not be swayed by what others do, where they go, or how they look and dress. Who freaking cares?? Just go about your business. Be a regular person and you'll attract regular people! Do you think that mostly millionaires live here? Nope. LA is mostly upper middle class, middle class, lower middle class, lower class, and poverty level. There are nice people and there are jerks in all those classes! There are good people and bad people, guys who want relationships and guys who don't, there are safe places to live and places that are not so safe. BUT. Where younger girls (under 30) like you make your biggest mistake, is in thinking that LA is this dream land that will solve all your problems. You can be a star here! Sure. If you're white, weigh 98 lbs, and you're Jennifer Aniston. And problems just don't disappear when you come here; if you have problems in other places, guess what? They seem to follow you here just like anywhere else! LA is not carefree "Hollywood"! Even the city of Hollywood isn't Hollywood. There is no such thing as "Hollywood". There's probably a 1 in 5 million shot to move out here and hit it big. And that is usually when you know somebody or have connections. LA and working in the industry, in any capacity, is all about your connections. I should know, I worked in the television industry. So it's really a childish dream to move here, or anywhere for that matter, hoping for stardom. That's just not reality. Hollywood is only on tv and in 1940s movies, lol. That is where you made your mistake. It's not LA that did you wrong, sweetie. It was your idea of us. I hope you didn't leave here resentful. Because LA is LA. Its the same place you thought it was when you moved here with just $1200 saved! You can't even get a single here for $1200. You are about 30 years too late with that savings. After college in the early 90s, I got my first 1 bedroom for $645. Exactly 30 yrs ago. But I want to end with a positive word for you --don't ever move anywhere because you have an expectation of that place. Move to a place where you have an expectation of happiness first. And you're just starting out, pleeease start small and don't go to the most expensive cities in the United States anymore! Good luck! ❤

LA has a lot of transplants. Sounds like you were dealing with a lot of the transplants, especially living in DTLA. Those are the people that are focused on pursuing their careers. I assume you live in the downtown area. LA natives are more chill but wont live in the downtown area since downtown residence became a thing the last 15 or so years with all the new apartments being built. But yeah, LA is not for everyone.

Cal300 is right. Only in the past 15 years has downtown LA become the thing. 20 years ago, it was all 2 ft long rats running around the streets, and homeless drunks in scuzzi hotels from 1920. It was literally scary. Now, as it's all so new, it's all so expensive.

I lived there for almost 5 years coming from DC (in the DMV there are huge swathes of generational middle-class to upper middle-class blacks). The culture of LA was very telling and very stark. Edit: I found the white people in California to be generally friendly. It was the Latinos who tended to be smug and unfriendly.

When it comes to the community aspect, I believe you really have to build it yourself here. Being born and raised in LA, I think the main issue is the commute to other people's places, as you mentioned before. You might find a reasonably priced place, but getting to DTLA will be challenging. It takes a genuine effort to stay in touch with your friends here. As for the keeping up with kardashians, I believe it's more about people coming here and being captivated by the glamour. Most lifelong residents keep their heads down and work/grind. However, it's easy to get caught up in it. Nice video hopefully you change your mind about LA, it has its problems but its an amazing city.
@AnnikaLaurenCassidy56

@LuisKnight Agreed and well said! The key here is to not get all caught up in the glitz and cars and money and celebrity. Who knows people who have that kind of stuff anyway?? I keep your nose down and mind your business you'll meet the right kind of people. And if you are around that kind of fast stuff and don't have the money yourself, then what are you doing hanging around that kind of stuff LOL?! Keep grounded, live your life, be yourself and you'll meet the right kind of people if you hang out in the right kind of places!

Moved to LA close to 15 years ago…it’s definitely a journey..the first few 2 years are the hardest but you kind of start your stride by the 4-5th year that sets you up for that 10th year and from there you pretty much are in the swing of things..the mission is to have a plan and work towards that plan little by little every day. You have to live in the journey. Live day to day..the hard part is being patient in the journey. But with anything..the key to success is taking the stairs not the elevator.

Hey, love love this video and this reflection. I have been in Los Angeles for going on 20 years in September, and I came here because I work in entertainment. Therefore I have no choice but to be here as of now, everything you are saying is fully accurate. And I'm so glad that you were one of the very few that actually came here with your eyes all the way open. To see what it is and how things work. Unfortunately, it is not a place where it is easy. To find roots and a tribe, I'm not gonna say it's impossible because it is, but it is not an easy place to find roots and a tribe, and you are right. Everybody is usually focused on what they want and how fast they want to get it. Most people are pretending to be more than they are. And in doing so, they will hurt each other to get where they want to be or disregard your humanity, because you may not fit a physical standard. Especially as a black woman, I will say that if you find a way like I have 2 create a small circle in a different area if you're able to move a little bit outside of LA. Hollywood, west Hollywood, etc. It is possible to find your own l. A most people wonder how I've survived here for so long and I always tell them it's because I've made Los Angeles, what I've needed it to be for myself. After 20 years of being here, I have considered moving elsewhere, but because my career literally is in this city. That does not seem like it's going to be a possibility as of yet. So in order to survive and thrive, you have to adapt and you have to create your own utopia, whatever you decide to do I hope you do it with love in your heart.Shine on boo

This is HILARIOUS...the people she just described as "people in Los Angeles" is HERSELF...lol. NOBODY in Los Angels is materialistic because people FROM L.A. are immune to the thought process both herself and th eidi0ts who move here come in with. People ARE friendly...but they dont have time for people like YOU...the minute you open your mouth people in L.A. dont have time for you or want anything to do with you... Los Angeles is a big "hometown" of smaller hometowns with people who are all CONNECTED with the "L.A. Spirit"...we see OUTSIDERS are opportunists who are just "looking to get something" by hanging out or "networking" or juts liv ein their own narcissitic fantasy..NONE of those types will do good in Los Angeles... Transplants live and go to the places where TRANSPLANTS go....so all the f---k up character traits she says Angelenos haveare REALLY herself and her transplant friends have!! Los Angeles people are DOWN TO EARTH...if you arent down to earth they will let you STAY in "nowhere -land" in your imagination until you get tired and drift to the NEXT city...we dont like drifters who think this is amusement or entertainment

My heart is still East Coast (DMV), but I'm a Californian, now. Having a purpose has strengthened me against the temptations a city of "stars, movies, women and cars," so I've stayed.
