This band is exact oppersit of what got me in to them. Album 1 was off the wall raw full of passion from the they got in to the record labels pockets and lost all that. They dint even swear in their songs anymore do they. Its not even the band I found back in the day. I never brought another album after Iowa or went to a concert. Once a great act now highly overrated

I wonder if the line "she isn't real" was a way of saying that it was based on a long distance relationship. Not too unlikely, considering the band would often be on tour. Could also be me interpreting it from my own past relationships. "She's a myth that I have to believe in" Nobody else knows she exists, and the only proof he has is a phone number. At any point one of them could just disappear and the other would never know why.

I always took Vermilion pt. 1 and 2, as the prequels to Snuff. Pt. 1 is angry and bitter talking about a toxic relationship that just started out as lust and then slowly he started catching feelings but also not wanting to actually take it further for one reason or another. Maybe cause he knows she doesn't feel the same way or because he's just scared of losing whats there by trying. So he keeps trying to just continue on like those feelings arent there and suppressing them but they just keep building (I won't let this build up inside of me) until it reaches a one sided obsession. Then she leaves and he's stuck with this idea and real pain from something that was never really the case to begin with or maybe could have been if he didn't get in the way of himself (She isn't real, I can't make her real). "She" being the idea of something real with this person. Then in Pt. 2 she's long gone (not dead) even though not a lot of time as passed and thus with it still being fairly fresh that obsession has turned from anger and resentment to sadness of what he hoped could have been, pain in what never was when it felt like it could've been, maybe even some self hatred for thinking it ever could have been or for maybe not trying to take that next step. Thus all culminating in Snuff taking place many years later when he's reflecting and thinking that maybe there was a little something there but they were both just not in remotely the right places and now she's gone (if you still care don't ever let me know.).

Just got this in my recommended. Very well-drafted, insightful, and albeit emotionally deep analysis on Would? By Alice In Chains. Love the video man! A second one I’d really like to recommend for your informed analogy is “Junkhead” (Also from the same band and album) That song in my honest opinion refers to: Layne Staley’s drug abuse, and what may be alluded as his girlfriend at the time getting him into the drug turning on “into an old favorite.” “What’s my drug of choice?” And “I don’t go broke.” A secondary point of comparison: When you gain fame, money of unfathomable gains. The personal cost and loss of your self identity and sense of belonging rapidly falls into disarray. With no escape from publicity everywhere you go and merely being viewed as a common commodity rather than a living and breathing human being. And buying more drugs than an average junkie themselves could afford when using the line: “We are an elite race of our own. The junkies, stoners, and freaks.” That money and status mean nothing to Layne now, because of his life is now “empty and bare.”

I've come to understand that Vermilion pt.2 is something... very dark, because instead of rage when he says I wont let this build up inside of me, its pain. Like All of this rage has taken a deeper tone from pure rejection, to try to trying to keep the acceptance from getting to him. And makes it feel like something has genuinely happened

This video made me realize that I havent listened to Slipknot in a long while. Vol. 3 is actually my favorite record from them and Vermilion was the first song of theirs that I learned to play when I was 14. I think its time I pay these old friends a visit.
