I'm really glad you both emphasized (essentially) the social contract. There's not nearly enough emphasis on player responsibilities to the table. The mainstream hobby culture treats the game experience like an amusement park, when it should more often be more like a theater troupe or sports team.

100% recommend the Monster Overhaul by Skerples. It is the only OSR monster book I use anymore!
@paulbigbeeАй бұрын
Rich vein for a show, great stuff. Some suggestions to your already excellent list: Forbidden Lands' _Book of Beasts_ , Raging Swan Press' _Dread Thingonomicon_ and _All That Glimmers_ . I enthusiastically second the recommendation of Skerples' _The Monster Overhaul_ . I'm looking forward to seeing what I can adapt from Goodman Games' _Dungeon Denizens_ when it arrives (soon). Speaking of settings (and DiTerlizzi), 2E Planescape was/is a mad masterpiece. I think it's the only official setting that can fit the superheroic power curve of D&D 2014/2024. However, I'm skeptical Shadowdark's lower power "dials" would support the high fantasy _Ptolus_ setting. All praise for _Dark Sun_ man, my favorite published setting as well ( _Dolmenwood_ a close second).
@Living4CritsАй бұрын
I agree that Ptolus's high fantasy setting doesn't quite mesh with Shadowdark's feel, but the concept of a city on top of a never ending series of dungeons does work. Not that you couldn't put any other city overtop the dungeons. Really wanna go back to Dark Sun again soon.

Compared to D&D, how accessable are "Fantasy Age & Dragon Age", which is the more easy & less complex thing? What's "Blue Rose" supposed to be, a fantasy RPG with the main focus on romance/erotic? 🤔
@Living4Crits2 ай бұрын
Both are pretty accessible compared to D&D 5e, but I'd say not as accessible as some of the OSR style games (which I greatly prefer over 5e). I never got into Blue Rose, so I can't speak to that, sorry! I'm more of a dark fantasy or Sword and Sorcery dude. Blue Rose didn't sound like my thing.

@ryanwest49682 ай бұрын
Congrats on 75 games of ShadowDark! Curious how you feel about cursed items? I haven't used a cursed item since second edition (AD&D) mostly because I think it's a jerk move by the GM. Armor -1 of sinking (always fail swim checks) or Sword -1 of screaming (-2 to CHA rolls as the sword will attempt to scream over anything you say) I do think a magic item that has a cost is cool and could be considered "cursed" i.e. a sword, that if you don't injure another sentient creature, you take 1d4 dmg per day(that does not heal). Thanks for the show, appreciate what you're doing.
@Living4Crits2 ай бұрын
I love cursed items, but I don't use them the way that the old D&D games do. I don't like the concept that cursed items MUST be used and the player has no power to put it down. I prefer cursed items that offer the temptation. It's a +0 Magic Dagger that offers a bonus of damage based on how many hp you as a wielder will sacrifice to a certain limit. It's a suit of armor that absorbs damage of one type at the expense of causing more from another. Nowhere in literature have I read of a cursed item that doesn't offer temptation.

I want to like DCC, but when the book is literally telling me to go look at other systems to figure out how to run games, why am I buying DCC books? When I looked at Shadowdark, it felt like it was THE game for me. It gives me not just everything to run the game, but to build sessions.
@Living4Crits2 ай бұрын
I feel like the DCC Core book does a great job teaching you how to run the DCC modules. And those modules are fantastic. But Shadowdark really does help you build and create a full world of your own.

You mentioned "scarcity" and I think this is one of Kelsey's subtle insights, presumably from her early D&D experience: designing a game that demands resource management creates opportunities to _relieve_ (temporarily or permanently) that problem. The easy example is the precarity of light: a shield that always emits a permanent Light spell is an insanely great magic item. I find that when modern games ignore or remove things like encumbrance, or food, or time result in profoundly negative effects on the long-term game experience.
