Hey Dave quick question why doesn’t anybody do powder coating as the planes finish?
@DaveCorinthКүн бұрын
Modern plane makers do, but have not seen anyone refinish one in that manner, although it certainly would be great finish. Not sure what someone would charge to powder coat one plane, or even if it would be cost effective.

You might want to use some of the piano keys with a kerf notched into it to hold the top edge of the planes. I currently work at night so I binge watch KZbin videos. Since discovering you I look forward to new videos when you put them out. Do you have any suggestions for other channels that you like? I just bought a no.7 Stanley I’ll keep you posted.

They had taken some of the front panels off and tried to burn it in their back yard along with some brush, but the brush was fresh and green and didn’t light. Thankfully!

Try looking for a Craftsman or a Sargent, or even a Union! Good planes and usually cheaper than a Stanley.
@jimbo26293 күн бұрын
I have a Stanley that didn’t work well till I flattered the sole using a worn sanding belt on my 1 metre long edge sander. The blade and cap iron on yours look exellent. You never have enough hand tools. I hope your sole is flat.

If your plane storage is going to be dedicated, just make a cleat/stop/hook, at the top of each plane, that the nose of each plane tucks under. You can still use your magnets to hold, but they (the planes) will not be able to tip backwards.
@DaveCorinth4 күн бұрын
I don’t think I’ll use the magnets on this one, but I definitely want to store most of them upright, as that seems to be the best use of space. I might still try the magnets but I will be putting several transitionals on this till and like the idea of a cleat! Thanks

This is going to be brilliant. The second you said “antique piano” I said “mahogany!”
@DaveCorinth4 күн бұрын
This one had some solid mahogany pieces throughout, and those that were veneered were done with a core of Chestnut!
@JamesR.Amador4 күн бұрын
Totally understandable that this was intended as a PSA. You might include for those that do not have the necessary tools and equipment (lathe) for themselves that the Craftsman Model 31586 screwdriver at about $10 will securely remove those same screws without damage.
@DaveCorinth4 күн бұрын
James Wright, made one on his channel, Wood by Wright. It was a lot more simple and he didn’t use a lathe, just parts around the shop he had laying around! You should check it out!

Solid mahogany, solid Ebony fingers, i am going to keep an eye out for pianos, quite often here in the uk people give them away because of the trouble of uplifting and paying for that. Firewood it definitely is not, great save and look forward to the ‘Till’
@DaveCorinth4 күн бұрын
I look for damaged or badly neglected upright grand pianos on marketplace. Usually they are free, but require a good friend or relative to help get them loaded as they are “heavy”. As a lover of music, I’m not keen on the idea of taking apart a perfectly good one. Something in me just tells me to leave the good ones alone!

Can't wait to watch this project unfold. I'm always interested in shop organization projects - and making use of interesting wood like you found. This is going to be great. No suggestions or ideas for you - I can't even organize my own stuff - but I will certainly be taking notes from your solutions.
@DaveCorinth4 күн бұрын
This will be a kind of “go with the flow”project. I honestly don’t have a clue what it’s going to look like in the end, but I’ve looked at other tills and tool storage projects and some general ideas in mind!

@DaveCorinth4 күн бұрын
I’m sure I will come across more lumber in the coming weeks to add to this! How big is your till going to be?
@devinteske4 күн бұрын
@ not big enough. It will in no way hold even a quarter of the antique tools I have acquired in the last 6 months. That being said, it’s a French cleat affair with storage doors. Dimensions with the doors open are 64” wide by 12” deep x 40” high. With the doors closed, 32” wide x 16” deep x 40” high. It’s from Woodcraft, the Hand-Tool cabinet from Classic Shop Plans, Plan No. 18, from 2011 (13 years ago).
