hi from uk,, thanks so much for this beautiful class ..you are so amazing.. the instructions are so clear .. the body posture ..body mechanics ..precise body movement and contour I can go on and on.. and there will be more to say about this class.. thanks soo so much.. but I want to say that its the direct opposite of what I have been taught and the instructions from a teacher from Argentina who teaches in London and Paris... his teaching is that its all about upper body so torso ..hip then the leg which is a consequence of the pivot... here you teach the opposite .. are you both correct ??? I know that from now on I am going to follow your method cos it gives me more control... more balance more everything... but but ... the question remains in my head... why is it being taught so differently .. the emphasis on different aspects.. .why>???

Thank you so much! That's a great question. The technique you describe is widespread, and many of us, including myself, started with it. Later, I found the one I explained, which I've used since. I wouldn't say one is right and the other is wrong. The one from your teacher benefits beginners and intermediates because it focuses on using the core. The other benefits advanced because it focuses on efficiency and freedom to adorn.

Firstly- thank you Jordi for taking the time to make and upload these videos. It's helpful. Question: how does the back rolls exercise from the head help with Tango? The same goes for back rolls from the hip. What is the application there?
@tangotools
@tangotools 4 ай бұрын
Thank you. These exercises improve posture by correcting the hunching of the upper back or a hollow lower back. Good posture is the basis of the tango technique. Balance depends on it, and everything else depends on balance.

Very useful exercises, once again, especially the dissociation exercises. For the backward step, you give different ways for the "man" (keeping leg and foot pointed forward) and the "woman" (turning knee and foot out to side). Are these really for when leading vs. following? Or are they for when wearing low-heel vs. high-heel shoes, regardless of gender or role? You said it's just for what looks better, but I have been working with a friend and she tells me when she steps backward she has to turn her leg specifically because (or when) she is wearing high-heeled shoes.
@tangotools
@tangotools 8 ай бұрын
I'm glad you liked the exercises. The two different back projections aren't related to different heel heights. They exist due to the importance of the back walk for the follower and what makes the woman's legs look the longest and most aesthetically pleasing.
@nikgervae

@@tangotools Thanks-I was wondering because of what my friend said but I'd never heard anybody say that before. I see other followers in high-heeled shoes project directly back all the time.

A tip that is helping me: Instead of trying to think of which # to count on (2, 1, 4, 3, 2, 3), I think of starting on 2, and then waiting for two ticks before I take the next step. It's always two ticks between, until the very last pair.

This is what I needed after the last video (which I have not finished). I always appreciate the most fundamental of practices-everything else works better when I improve the foundations.
@tangotools
@tangotools 9 ай бұрын
I completely agree. I always try go down to the fundamental pieces of a movement. Some people are bored by this approach. I'm glad you like it.
@nikgervae
@nikgervae 10 ай бұрын
This is surprisingly difficult, more than the earlier videos. A true 180° pivot is much harder to do than one where just the feet & hips turn 180°. Also, I tried doing this with a friend and I could not figure out how to sequence the steps with a partner. Maybe it's because he's a man and isn't supposed to be following. Then again, he was able to lead the sequence fine when I was following. Maybe I am a woman after all. :-P
@tangotools
@tangotools 9 ай бұрын
In my experience, it's not easy to "see the four legs" when trying sequences alone, regadless of gender. You need practice so that you know the sequences by heart.

in the initial exercise with one foot in front of the other will the back leg be straight or bent slightly. I can' t seem to keep it bent
@tangotools
@tangotools 9 ай бұрын
I have it bent, but only slightly. The knee of the back leg presses against the hollow behind the knee of the front leg.
@nikgervae
@nikgervae 10 ай бұрын
I've been doing a lot of practice moving my free leg any which way to improve my stability on the standing leg and strengthen my axis, but these pendulum exercises are working even below that level...exactly what I need! The front knee bending was really exhausting at first but I am watching you closely to see how you let go of the effort as the leg pendles, and the path it takes, and it gets freer and easier each time. Another video worth repeating many times. ¡Muchas gracias!
@tangotools
@tangotools 9 ай бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad it helps. In my experience, it takes many hours of practice to achieve an effortless and expressive movement of the free leg. It's one of the hallmarks of tango, for both roles.
@pat0424
@pat0424 10 ай бұрын
the movement at about 17:00 open, push and slide: I see you use a knife like movement with your lead foot. I've been working on stepping with my heal down lately as I think it helps my balance. Do you think I should alter your exercise so I land on my heal instead of sliding forward? OR is my style of walking not really in conflict with yours and I needn't worry about it. I which case I would perform the exercise as you suggest in your wonderful video? I'm a novice....
@tangotools
@tangotools 9 ай бұрын
I'm glad the videos are helpful. The stepping technique is a matter of personal preference and which style of music you're dancing. A "knife" fits slow and melodic music better. In the exercise, I use both techniques myself. I recommend you to practise both.
