Something you might want to keep in mind, the horncheeks either side of the axleboxes, generally they have a magnesium alloy wear plates, if you add oil you will attract dirt which will cause increased wear, plus the design of the wear plates adds friction so the loco doesn't bounce on the coil springs, which will also cause variations to the adhesion on the wheels. Also when you are getting wheelslip in wet slippery conditions you can apply a small amount of brake which will limit the wheels from slipping so easily, it may seem like a odd thing to do, by applying the brake a little bit you are no longer relying on just the adhesion of the wheel to the rail, in order for the wheels to slip they also have to slip on the brakes as well. I use to drive cane 40 ton locos in Queensland Australia on 2ft gauge hauling rakes of cane bins weighing up to 1500 tons.

what I love about this tractor is you can literally build one from plate steel and I beams . every part of it other then the engine transmission and rear diff is all plate shaped to fit . the I beam part is to make the track links which you can get from cutting up the flange of the beam in to section and welding on the plates to follow the runners . even the drive sprocket is made from plate . God now I want to build one you just can't beat simple design .

It's one of those gas engines that sounds like a Diesel. I had a Poulan Pro lawn mower with an iron block 18 hp Kohler Magnum flat head opposed twin engine and it had that kind of Diesel sound to it as well. That was an engine that didn't like cold weather as it often backfired so hard out the mufflers that sometimes it ruptured them and then I spent time putting them back together. You read right, it had dual exhaust and a new muffler was CA$200 each. It was a great little engine when it was running, but was an absolute pig on gas.

We had a narrow gauge railway in Newcastle Wyoming that went from town to Cambria coal mine years ago. The Amish own a chunk of the property and the rail bed is still in good shape. I have encouraged them to find track and rebuild the bridges and make it an attraction…we will see

Having that little peek hole in the floorboard you ought to build a traction sander. All you'd need is a weep valve, a short length of hose or copper tubing and a 2 liter pop bottle!

I got run a standard guage Plymouth mechanical drive locomotive and I must say, compared to a diesel electric, it was strange. I had to work a clutch and a transmission like a regular truck.

It would have been interesting seeing these running out at Baraboo between the assembly buildings as I believe they had 23 Mi of Narrow Gauge trackage. They had their original fleet from the 1940s which basically got traded in on this newer style. Plus they had the largest group of Rogers Brothers locomotives thankfully some of which were saved. Snow plowing must have been interesting
