Congratulations!! Thanks for sharing your journey. It's been a real encouragement and extremely helpful getting to see a glimpse of what it's like to making a manga. How many hours per day did you work on your manga?
@pabgerdieАй бұрын
Surprisingly, when making the storyboard of my manga series, I didn't make any of the mistakes you mentioned. I completed the whole script before getting to the storyboard, I tried using very simple thumbnails and placeholders, I took into account the backgrounds by taking into account the camera position and a simple approach of them and I looked for feedback for not only the storyboard but also the script until I felt like the plot would work. Still I'm glad I watched this video to make sure I was going to the right direction.

You drew 3 panels in 8 hours. Here I am thinking you're fast, while in the industry that's considered turtle pace. The biggest hurdle comic artists go through is getting good enough to draw faster without having to think so hard about every stroke of the pen. Faster, better, stronger 🖊

As someone who also draws manga I must confess I have a very inconsistent schedule lol, one day I draw 2-3 pages and then next I go a week drawing half a panel. I think that's because I love drawing one shot illustrations too so I do that + the manga pages Although I have gotten better and improved a lot, and the gap between my chapters have gotten a lot smaller, once taking about 6-7 months then to 4 then to 3 and now we're coming up to 2 so it's going smoothly. Also nice to see some Mashima Sensei appreciation, he is the artist I look up to, my style is sort of similar to his, absolutely love his works, FT, Edens Zero, Rave Master, Deadrock, etc.

Back when I'm just starting out as artist, I find inktober to be great for practicing and for connecting with other artist. It gets me to build a habits of drawing everyday. I did it for 3 year straight, but later I find it becoming toxic like the point you made in a video because at that point I started to take my art seriously,and try to build my social media. I realized I didn't participate it for me ,but for visibility. The pressure became too much that I stop doing it entirely. Inktober is an amazing challenge imo, if you focus on the community aspect of it. It's like you draw along with other fellow artist from around the world ,and it gets you excited to draw, but if you focuses too much on the engagement ,and constantly compare your art with others, it can becomes very toxic.
@honeybnoir824Ай бұрын
It makes sense. It’s not just in manga. It’s any art form, really. It’s has to do with what makes you different and recognizable from all the other artists out there. I think I’ve gotten closer to that now than I did before. My art of course still needs a lot of work for improvement, but that’s part of being an artist too, including manga.

I've done stuff for inktober before because I love pen/ink as a medium... also loved the opportunity to show off freehand drawing skills that a lot of obnoxious clout-chasing artists seem quite challenged by when lacking all of the digital tools they typically rely on (same with their fans, frequently perpetuating a belief that above a certain level of freehand accuracy must always mean "tracing.") But I didn't do pieces daily, I can't power through work that consistently. Still though, gets annoying to see all of the soulless self-promotion that becomes of these trends.

I’m glad I’m not the only creator in the space with a similar ideology about the whole dumbass labeling what a comic or a manga is when at the end of the day, we’re all just drawing cool pictures with dope stories attached to them in a book for people to read and hopefully enjoy instead of worrying about what cultures are the most important to implement and what to call the books

Tbh as a newb comic artist I don’t really do inktober for the views because Ik ill get none lol. I just do it to strengthen some skills I’m lacking. I take my main character and other side characters and I use them in the prompts to practice posing and scenery just without the pressure of making it for my comic if that makes any sense. Like this time around I’m using this inktober to focus on dynamic forms and expressive characters. To challenge myself outside of making a comic.

If doing every day is a struggle something i like to do is do a prompt every other day or once a week. You dont have to do every single day if you really don't want to or are struggling. The reality is people dont care so just do the challenge however you please.

For me when I do inktober(drawtober now because Jake Parker can kick rocks), I tend to choose to do eyes, it's something I've always done with my art is I want to put some focus on how I do things like eyes, and during Drawtober, it's given me leaps and bounds of things to consider, not that I don't do that in my freetime, doing Drawtober just helps kinda amplify it, Not a lot really is required to go into an eye, but I also make another challenge out of it, that being a palette challenge, I just choose a theme each year, and come up with palettes based on certain things, like last year I did palettes that I downloaded off the Clip studio Assets store, and this year I'm doing flowers, but I've done drawtober for six years at this point, I'm kinda thinking that I'm going to retire from doing drawtober drawings. I've got art projects from last year of all times that I have not finished, but I'm also going back and resketching and lining those as those were never coloured initially to begin with. XD

I'd join but im lazy and have my own goals that I need to over come first. Not to mention the challenge itself doesn't seem that interesting to be honest.

I've actually done Inktober based around 4-komas. That was pretty difficult, and I didn't really get any views for it but it still felt rewarding afterwards because I had got something done. I'm quite proud of them. The story part wasn't actually the hard part to me, they were just silly skits. I had planned out about 20 or so before October started so I knew I had time to come up with others as I went along. Some skits even ended up just being a way to vent about the whole thing. There's always some kinda small thing to make a tiny comic out of so I had no drought of ideas. Some of the skits were easy to build off of too to make a running gag. The part that exhausted me the most about doing comics for inktober was all the technical polishing aspects, such as scanning the pages, and editing all the word balloons and boxes to make it readable. Some days I was just not in the mood for any of that, and glad to do ones where it was just visual gags with little dialogue. I don't know, I've done Inktober twice now including this one and I'll probably do it again in the future if I can come up with a new challenge that seems fun. Don't think I'd find it as fulfilling if I used other people's prompts. I don't think exposure should ever be the reason to do it either (I know some people get lucky with it but I've certainly never got much of any for doing it so that's never going to be the reason I do it). Don't fault a challenge so much for what is more an internal problem - (i.e. the ego's concern for external validation, or perfectionism.) If you frame the challenge more as a personal test of one's persistence or to practice your ink work then the challenge needn't become toxic and can be a lot more intrinsically rewarding when you complete it. In fact, I think I'd recommend to only upload the pictures after you've already completed the challenge. If you're focusing on the social media aspect during the challenge, that can be an additional point of stress or demotivation, especially if you're a small creator.
@ivanav.3136Ай бұрын
i tried in the past just making black & white illustrations and uploading it as part of the theme (being ink) without following the word prompts. it was okay, made it as an art dump. idk if I'll do it again. heard somewhere too that some artists actually draw before october starts. so by the time they start uploading come oct they already have a backlog of drawings (like what people do in comics). but i completely understand what you feel though! when you're drawing & scripting a comic and all you care to draw is that comic, the non-related art becomes MORE work to do. ugh it's easy to focus on one's comic.

I may do the comic page challenge though

I'll admit, I've only started to draw back in February of this year so the part on it feeling like a daily grind for context... really isn't that different from how I already do things in terms of trying to get the basics of art down in the first place. Like, I WISH I was good enough that I could afford to not draw for an internment amount of time and still have my smartering of skill when I got back to it. But I'm not yet at that level, so I just keep pratiacing, the small breaks I do take notwithstanding. Not saying you're wrong on the burn out or anything, of course.

Illustrator here I am doing the prompts, but Sometimes things happen, like I was getting ready to color and ended up with 5 dead markers. Which was lame since the caps were fine and I only used those colors a few times. Nice set back having to get refills. I decided the prompts I don't like as much are practice and the ones I do like will get 9 hours of my time. There are few that will take days like my idea for Violin, so will work on that during the week leading up. Anyway I doubt I get much traffic, but friends of mine are excited to see what I do for the prompts.

Why do you care so much about social media? Just create art, post it on social media and then go back to create something new. Who cares if it looks like shit? Do you create art for the sake of pleasing other people? I create art for myself idgaf about others opinion about it.
@LadyMoonlightelfАй бұрын
I might be able to enlighten this really good question with bit of a perspective. But I do admire your "idgaf" attitude about all this! Wish people had the sense to not tie their self-worth to social media these days... Either way. To some artists, creation of art may very well be their only income in form of commissions. That means they need to uphold good reputation, quality and work ethic to garner the social media attention to basically pay their bills. If this sort of artist went into Inktober with the attitude of "idgaf about others opinion" or "who cares if it looks shit", when they normally spend time to do some more decent or greater art. This sort of stark difference in quality in their social media can be worriesome to possible clients, who may start to question if their commission of their beloved OC, pet or family member is going to be even taken seriously. Or if the possible mistakes get corrected if pointed out. Another approach to this could be the following: Person comes across four artists, all in need of commissions to pay their bills and having same prices (because sad reality is, sometimes even good artists are selling art at really cheap prices...). Artist A has "whatever" attitude and shells out art into their gallery that to general eye "looks shit". Artist B cares more about the art itself and the gallery is somewhat pleasant to look at. Artist C also has pleasant-looking gallery, but also has the "whatever" attitude about art. Artist D has unfortunately the "looks shit" gallery, but care great deal about their art. General person would be more likely to go to Artist B, not only because they have nice gallery to look at, but also because they most likely won't leave the person hanging with possible mistakes in art and would be far more willing to fix possible mistakes in the commission. The person could also go to Artist D just to support their budding career as an artist. This would be my two cents about the matter. Some artists who rely on commissions just... don't have the luxury of "idgaf" attitude and have to make art to please their clients.

@@LadyMoonlightelf I'm a full time commission artist for 13 years in a shit hole 3rd world country but can make ends meet while from to time posts shit art on social media. You know why? Because it creates a sense of familiarity through vulnerability. You show people that not everything you do is perfect. Just put "30 min sketch" hashtag and your good to go. Separate your social media from your portfolio. Social media is about connecting with your audience.

I mainly just pick a few and sketch only those because daily drawing is mad to me as a hobby. The moment I read you're a manga artist, I was like of course you're not gonna do inktober, you already do inktober the whole year. That's awful. I can't believe Elder Scrolls Online does it better with their little multi-day theme slots instead of daily investment. Artfight is more fun. I can opt-in, pick lil dudes I think are cool, do my three pieces, and then chill. Artfight always has that one piece I like the most out of the three I chose. Also, I like keeping my stats. As in, I NEED to have a high battle ratio. I can NEVER get more art than I give out.

All the other years I’ve never been able to complete (or sometimes start) Inktober due to getting fatigued or overwhelmed but this year I’m trying to complete it and not worry about being perfect so ig I’m going for quantity and I don’t see that as a bad thing at least for myself as I’ve always had a problem with perfection and my art process is slow bc of that. It’s outstanding how little art pieces I have compared to how long I’ve had my drawing tablet
