You could have used the bottle (I kept my empties) that lye came in to mix the lye and water. Put the top back on and shake it. No fumes just be sure to loosen cap to release pressure every now and then.

Instead of olive oil, could one use avocado oil? Thank you.
@iwannaapple71902 ай бұрын
Avocado is softer oil. Olive is too but its unique property is it gets harder and harder as it cures. But I say go for it. Why not? I took the time to figure it for you. She is superfatting at 6.6%. I recommend 3.5% so I'll show you both and how to do it for your mold amount. Measure your mold = W x D x H x .42 = oil amount your mold will do. (this takes into account of other liquids also). Then calculate your lye. Lye = oilAmt(convert to grams not ounces) x .133 = Answer is in grams only. Now subtract 3.5% to 6.6%. Every one usually subtracts 5% from the lye amount and that is the lye that you use. 100% lye could result in crusty, cracked, not as good for skin soap. Now you need water. You ALWAYS need at the very least the same weight as your lye but I wouldn't recommend that. Makes soap to hot, might crack or be lye heavy with crust. I recommend multiplying your lye amount by 1.85 and that will be your water amount. This video, for example, is 2.38 x lye amount= amount of her water. If you don't have a stick blender you can use a wisk. Mix till you see a solid color and no darker spots and if you can bring it to a slight trace that would be better. Notice the top of her soap batter. It looks shiny. Almost like silk on top. Thats what it looks like when its mixed up good. It DOES NOT HAVE TO HAVE TRACE. Just make sure its all solid in color as best as you can when you pour. Good luck. BTW, 50oz of avocado oil at 3.5% SF would be 337 grams of water, 182 grams of lye. 5% SF = 179 grams of lye, 331 grams of water. Either one of these would work.

I’m a firm believer in the beauty of simplicity! I do have one query - could you kindly share where you procure your lye beads and essential oils? The quality of ingredients can indeed be the deciding factor between a good and a great recipe. 🌿🧼

Instead of using olive oil would it work with MCT and tallow and Squalane oil as long as the fat still equals the 50 ounces? (I have sub derm, and malassazia safe oils like MCT and squalane don’t feed it, that is why I make my own soap, it’s hard to buy).

I’m glad you found the video helpful. However, I wanted to clarify something important about using vinegar for lye burns. While it’s a common suggestion, it’s actually not recommended because vinegar can cause a chemical reaction that generates heat, potentially worsening the burn.

Becky+++++++++++++++++++ I use a scent oil....I make my oil from the thyme or rosemary I grow in my herb garden....I just have so much waste of the herbs if I don't get creative- like defused oils. Search how to infuse oil with your herb of choice and it'll show you how. OR I've been known to just cheat and buy some orange oil or scented oil. Whatever you like is fine. I like my lard soap to smell good like my great granny's did. She put dried, ground up orange peel AND orange oil into hers. It smelled like fresh squeezed oranges and the orange peel would gently scrub off the dirt. I'm 51 so, she knew all the old secrets to making stuff. LOL.
