I got a tad emotional in the intro....how well I understand the "give up the rat race or carrot on a stick" lifestyle. My wife and I found a turn of the century home in the country where we raised our family of four children...horses, pigs, chickens, geese...you name it. That was thirty six years ago. To this day all of my children thank us for raising them in the country and brag on how wonderful and full their childhood was. Now, eleven grand children later... my daughter is doing the same. While homesteading may not be for everybody, I would consider it a healthier lifestyle than being a city slicker. Work around the home(stead) provided more physical activity, including being out in the clean open air, which makes one sleep better which is super important especially when getting older.

This is my favorite soap recipe. I use it as a shampoo bar soap. Depending on the weather, I can go 3-4 days without washing my hair. I use to have to wash my hair everyday. I'm no expert on making soap but Lard is chemically more similar to palm oil than Coconut oil. I sincerely apologize. Lard is NOT a substitute for Coconut Oil. Thank You!

Hi Becky! FYI: lye is NOT acid, it is "basic" or alkaline, which is why the acetic acid in vinegar wil neutralize it. Nice video!

PSA - Neutralizing lye w vinegar creates an EXOTHERMIC reaction meaning you’ll be burning yourself TWICE! Once with the lye causing a chemical burn and again with a thermal burn caused by the neutralization - that energy has to go somewhere. Best to rinse with LOADS of water, save the vinegar for pickling! It’s disheartening that this misinformation is still shared!

@@blowitoutyourcunt7675 It's still shared because it's good advice. I've been making soap for almost 30 years, and use vinegar *all the time* when I get lye on my hands. The amounts we deal with are not large enough to create any exothermic heat. It's a classic case of book knowledge and practical experience. We know that mixing acids and bases creates water, salts, and heat. But in practice, when you get some lye crystals under your fingernail or in an old paper cut, household vinegar will quickly and painlessly neutralize the lye.

My wife and I followed a similar recipe last year and it came out great. We made a second batch and added several hand fulls of rose petals and the same with sweet pea petals. This gave a really nice natural sent to the soap my wife loves. You could buy and add essential oils but that would just be adding additional chemicals. Great video. You can actually distill your own essential oils like lavender using steam distillation then you know your not adding any crazy chemicals... You can also make your own lye with wood ash if you have a wood stove at home.

You can also use your hot lye water (heat transfer) into your fat (lard, cocoa butter etc) to melt your fats or butter. If you do this, actually use a spatula and pour the lye water over the top of the spatula that is in the lard. Then use the immersion blender in spurts to bring your product to trace.

My thought as well. When she said "lye is acid" I was like waaaaaiiity did someone reverse the ph scale and not tell me? I was always taught anything with a ph above 7 is basic, anything below is acidic. I guess people get confused that bases can be caustic.

Wearing: gloves, goggles, long sleeves * make it in a well ventilated area or even outside, make sure no pets or kids are around the fumes after mixing the lye water will make it hard to breathe and making you feel as if you will choke making you cough. *Vinegar incase you splash lye on you/ I would suggest rinsing it off with water is fine to. * adding the lye to water never the other way around 40 oz lard ( melted) 5.4 lye ( order on amazon) 13.5 oz water Allow it to cure for about 3 weeks Add the lye into the water, melt the lard add it to lye water and stir for a second make sure the lard is room temperature around 80 degrees ( both was about 100 degrees) mix till you can see the soap start to trace, pour into mold let sit, and cover let sit for 24 hr.

Pouring vinegar on strong hot lye will make it a whole lot hotter. If you have either a strong alkali or a strong acid on your skin, the recommended first aid is to flood it with lots of cool water to dilute the pH to a safe range without creating an exothermic chemical reaction on your skin.

Here's the ingredients for a homemade organic herbal soap 5 cups coconut oil 3 cups lye solution (made from wood) 1 cup fresh herbal extract (I used herbal and fruit extracts) 1 tablespoon citronella oil (optional) Use same process. Mix oil with lye solution. If the mixture becomes creamy add the herbal or fruit extract and mix for few minutes until it meets its consistency. Add citronella oil and mix for few seconds. Pour into a molder and let it stand for 12-24 hours. Remove from molder and cut to desired size. Air dry for 28-30 days to complete saponification. Clean and packaging. Good luck.

Saponification is the name of the process. It's funny when people make fun of lye soap (like the Beverly Hillbillies, note Granny was always BOILING a HUGE kettle of supposed soap, and I promise if you boil it , it will come out grainy.). they think the lye stays lye, like chemistry doesn't happen to change it into something else. That would be like sodium and chloride stayed their respective toxic selves instead of turning into salt. Also, there are VERY cute candy silicone molds and soap molds to make adorable soaps if you want.

If I’m working indoors with anything that makes a vapor I always work beside my cooktop and turn on my vent fan. I have a downdraft cooktop. This is a great way to avoid tears when chopping onions, as well.

I bought heart shaped moulds and my best friend bought me a doctor who one randomly last year and Im also going to try a pingles can like someone suggested tonight. Im excited. I just ran out of my hot process soap and this will be my first time doing cold process.

Great tutorial, however, to keep from adding unnecessary and unnatural chemicals into the soap, a glass bowl would be much better when mixing the lye, so you dont get bpe's into the soap. And when mixing the lye, its best to do it outdoors for better ventilation.

Blahs Blahs actually, glass should NOT be used to mix lye. #5 plastic is best. Glass containers have been known to explode from the lye water mix!

We use Pyrex glass containers that withstand 450°F and we used it to mix the lye while having a thermometer in the water to watch the temperature carefully and never has it broken and I agree on it being mixed outside also, for better ventilation

Maria Ramirez Lye, overtime can etch away at the glass making it unstable and prone to shattering. I for one would not risk shattering glass with a caustic solution flying at me. #5 plastic is the best container.

A little reminder for everyone. To for containing lye solution, PP or PVC are your best choice. Never use glass container.

Great tutorial...lye is actually a base (NaOH). It is caustic and will cause burns. Still dangerous, but on the other side of the pH scale. That's why you use vinegar to neutralize the lye...vinegar is an acid. It's an exothermic reaction. "It's chemistry!"

Have gathered all I need to try my first ever batch of soap. This looks like a great starting point for me. I have always been intimidated by the lye. LOL I decided the only way I am ever going to do it is by doing it. But the mold I ordered turned out to be much smaller than I thought it was. Can you tell me the volume, or the measurements, of this mold you are using so I can adjust the recipe appropriately, please? Thanks for sharing your videos with us.

I used a cardboard box lined with plastic wrap set on a towel which I set up before hand. I left it over night then cut into bars the next day Carefully ! Rewraped and left for three days . Stored it in a warm cupboard for 6 monthes or more. This was 4# lard one can lye ,about 4 ounces ,eleven dollars worth made a years supply of soap for hand and laundry. I fallowed the recipie on the can of lye .
