I am not a Morrisey fan but I quite liked the way he sung this. On the other hand, I wish he had not replaced some of the lyrics to more banal ones. I am OK with him changing 'Jagger' to 'David Johansen' but 'Point towards another phone' instead of the original 'Pour me out another phone' is not an improvement. Maybe he just did not know the correct lyrics because he made many changes that served no purpose.

'point' like 'pointed' is very emphatic, very Morrissey. I don't dispute what you're saying though.

Everyone I've ever known has wished me well Anyway, that's how it seems, it's hard to tell Maybe people only ask you how you're doing 'Cause that's easier than letting on how little they could care But when you know that you've got a real friend somewhere Suddenly all the others are so much easier to bear Now, to see things clear it's hard enough, I know While you're waiting for reality to show Without dreamin' of the perfect love And holding it so far above If you stumbled onto someone real, you'd never know (You'd never know) You could be with somebody who is lonely too (Sometimes it doesn't show) He might be trying to get across to you (Words can be so slow) When your own emptiness is all that's gettin' through There comes a point when you're not sure why you're still talking I passed that point long ago (Long ago) I'm so tired of all this circling And all these glimpses of the end (You know it's useless to pretend) That's all the voices say, you'll go right on circling Until you've found some kind of friend Well, I saw you through the laughter and the noise You were talking with the soldiers and the boys While they scuffled for your weary smiles I thought of all the empty miles And the years that I've spent looking for your eyes (Looking for your eyes) Now I'm sitting here wondering what to say (That you might recognize) Afraid that all these words might scare you away (Break through the disguise) No one ever talks about their feelings anyway Without dressing them in dreams and laughter I guess it's just too painful otherwise Look, it's like you're standing in the window Of a house nobody lives in And I'm sitting in a car across the way (Let's just say) It's an early model Chevrolet (Let's just say) It's a warm and windy day You go and pack your sorrow The trash man comes tomorrow Leave it at the kerb and we'll just roll away

I'm so tired of all this circling! People only ask how I am doing cuz it's easier than letting on how little they could care! No one ever talks about their feelings anyway. I guess it's just too painful.... I keep packing my sorrow. Dragging it to the curb. But I sure wish I had a real friend somewhere....it would help make all this easier to bear. Jackson. You write the words and sing the tune for millions of us. I feel less alone because of you.

I'm sure I've heard this in the past, but I've never REALLY heard it until this week. I revisited Late for the Sky after its recent induction into the National Recording Registry. This song came back to me at a time in my life when it perfectly encapsulates some intense feelings of the past few weeks. Sometimes it be like dat.

My freshman year in college I worked in the cafeteria at dinner time. When I was done I'd go back to the dorm, shower and listen to this album probably 5 to 6 days a week. This song brings those old feelings back.

This album is freaking beautiful. One of the few I have listened to from beginning to end, just stunning. When Springsteen inducted JB into the RRHoF in '04, he specifically mentioned the car doors slamming at the end of this song.

I always loved this song but only recently got it. Of course I guess we all put our own meanings to things but having just recently lost the possibility of a relationship with someone this will always haunt me. The future seemed so great when we talked about it and finally admitted our feelings but too many obstacles in the present from making it happen. We were so close to making it happen...it's like she was standing in a window of house nobody lives in and was sitting in a car across the way.

Soundtrack to my life! This song was played incessantly (this whole album actually) on my way back up to school in Connecticut from visits back home in Joyzee in the mid 1970s. I can still picture the parts of the northbound Merritt Parkway I passed during parts of this song. ;) MAGICAL lyrics, and YES, Dave's mournful lap steel is some of the best work on that instrument I've EVER heard!!
