I know this is a very old video but hopefully someone can help with this: is the PVC piping ok for a Glycol chiller? I’ve found different opinions all over the internet about it. Most people say the pipes should be Stainless Steel or Copper

Parts list - Keg Washer Parts

Thx for the excellent video! My company does mostly commercial/industrial HVAC work.. but recently we were asked to install a glycol chiller for a company that cans drinks, including carbonated beverages. They asked us to install the chiller... so I'm scrambling to find out as much as I can before agreeing to do the work. The chiller is needed to cool the beverage before the carbonation process. Any you info you can send my way would be much appreciated! Jack
@ekapada3 жыл бұрын
I would think a good beverage glycol chiller and glycol trunk line would do the trick. Foxx Equipment can sell one and make up the glycol line. If you had one that was about 20 ft. long and the glycol is always set at 29 F, then if your beverage is cool to start with, the trunk line will deliver product sufficiently cold enough to carbonate. If it is room temperature, then a longer trunk line so the product has time. Another possibility would be to run the product through a heat exchanger, with chilled glycol on one side and product on the other, but that is more expensive. How much needs to be chilled for packaging?

You can’t sterilize with alcohol and flame ... and blowing it out ... ?! Skip those steps and just spray with sanitizer.
@ekapada3 жыл бұрын
That's just the way they taught me at Siebel, but basic sanitizer spray, sure, that works.
@lupusadsurgit55973 жыл бұрын
Using alcohol and flame to sterilize some surfaces and equipment is a normal practice in microbiology labs, don’t see a problem using it in a brewery.

Each keg is about 5 to 7 minutes which includes the lifting and. sorting. This works great for a brewpub, where you are only doing 8 to 12 kegs per week, as everything is out of serving tanks.

I just wanted to say thanks for this, after watching this video a couple years ago I was able to build one of these for our brewpub. I am in the process of adding a timer and a dual, individually pressure controlled manifold to be able to clean 2 kegs at once without uneven pressures between the two. I'm surprised at everyone asking for parts lists.. the video is pretty good at showing everything and its not hard to google or search for these things. I got everything on ebay.

We only have a 7 BBL system so our mash is usually only about 450#. I haven't timed it but it takes about 15 minutes to 20. But I think mill speed has a lot to do with it.

Did I miss the part where you sanitize?
@ekapada5 жыл бұрын
We don't for in-house kegs. I learned this from Breckenridge years back. Never had a problem in over ten years. If kegs go out to accounts then after final rinse, we change tank to sanitizer and run a loop with that, ending the same way with purge and pressurize. Hope that clarifies.
Thanks for the upload! I agree a parts list would be super appreciated. Mostly curious on how you connected the water hose to that 1 1/2" butterfly valve?

Back at it with a few more questions. I went ahead and ordered the same 1HP Thomsen #4 pump with internal seals. Built my keg washer to the same exact specs at yours with the manifold and all tubing the same sizes. The only differences are that I built mine with a 10 gallon kettle and on a keg cart. Pump wise I ended up going with the 3 phase version so I could run it on a VFD. Mine at full power won't get above 11psi which is funny, because my hot water hose gets it to 20psi in the manifold gauge. What would be causing that? Pretty frustrating! Especially seeing that yours isn't even fully cracked open and you hit 15psi no problem.
@ekapada5 жыл бұрын
For cleaning as long as you place your hands on the keg you are cleaning and you can feel the surface is hot, that means the cleaning solution is hitting everything. The 15 psi is important to pressurize the keg once it is rinsed and your co2 regulator should do that.

Is simply injecting CO2 sufficient for the 'blanket' or do you require something specialized?
@ekapada5 жыл бұрын
Yes, but let it settle before transfer. The gas is of course heavier so the blanket will stay on the beer as you transfer.
@jimbaroffio78435 жыл бұрын
@@ekapada Hey man, thanks for the reply...I read somewhere about 'sterile' co2...which I assume does not mean sterile gas but instead, sterile input, but I may be wrong...
@ekapada5 жыл бұрын
I don't know what that is. The pH in your server is pretty low so I wouldn't be concerned about the CO2 infecting your beer. Some people will fill a tank with water, then displace it with CO2 so they know for sure it's a total CO2 environment, but I think that's taking it a bit too far

Thank you for the great video. Could you please tell me what beer style the yeast harvested from? Since the yeast is super creamy, i guess the beer doesn't get dry-hopped...
@ekapada6 жыл бұрын
That's a great question. Since we are using a conical, we harvest yeast and THEN dry hop. This yeast is a dry English ale, but it works the same for lagers (just not as thick). Hope that answers your question. Cheers. Tom
@seosoong6 жыл бұрын
@@ekapada thank you for your reply! I have another question to ask: do you dry-hop while fermenting? If beer is dry-hopped after yeast harvest, i guess it would lead to uncomplete fermentation to final gravity... Haven't you ever had this problem? Cheers!
@ekapada6 жыл бұрын
Not quite sure I understand. We completely ferment, then give it a diacytal rest, then chill, harvest yeast and dry hop, so the beer is finished. I would avoid dry hopping during fermentation as you might most likely introduce bacteria and wild yeast into your fermentation.
@primetimez8636 жыл бұрын
2.4 billion? So you would just pitch that right into your fermenter tank and that would be enough for your next batch? Depending on how many bbls your brewing 10? Is that enough yeast? Or are you going to step it up for the right amount of pitch rate?
@ekapada6 жыл бұрын
I use a pitching rate calculator from Brewing Science Institute. Then I convert what it tells me to weight. The yeast brink goes on a scale and I transfer the yeast slowly in line while transferring wort to the fermenter. The scale tells me when I have enough. Or, you could simply add about a pint and a half per BBL for medium gravity beers, but then you would miss out on all the fun.
