Great, thanks! It's a very good lesson, how to teach the forearm issue from the middle to the tip. It's always so confusing for students. ¡Gracias!

Excellent! It would be great if you could do a couple videos on some classical repertoire like the six suites and comparing contrast how the piece sounds with each form of intonation. This was really excellent thank you very much!

Thank you. The analogy of the ribbon helps understand the concept, but how any other tips on the practicality of moving the fingers after the arm. Really struggling!! 🙈 thank you

Amazing video. What a most humble man. No surprise that he is such a great teacher. I have learned a huge amount today. He gives a time frame of how much time we should practice this exercise. Brilliant. I just love his approach.

You and I studied with professor Starker at the same time. I remember very vividly your beautiful singing sound back then, that you have certainly kept, together with an excellent technique and a very kind personality combined with a fabulous talent for teaching. I ,as an orchestra player( 36 years in the Israel Philharmonic) also needs to be reminded of the big " secrets" of good playing from time to time. Shifting being one of the many aspects of playing. Thank you for doing so. Janos would be very proud of you. You certainly honour him well. Congratulations and Bravo!

9:40 on this case, the G will be slightly off with the open G? it is better to mute the open G string or just eat the tiny disonance it makes? because I tend to always go to resonate to the ringing tones, in fact for a time it was my only way to feel i was on tune x'd the same goes to the E for example, if you pay atention to the ring it makes from the C strings you can feel on tune and out of tune at the same time and you dont know what to do :C
@kamikan229 ай бұрын
one way to understand it easier is on violin that we also "raise the frog" when going to the tip and "raise the tip" when going to the frog to get an efforless transmition of weight and control, is the same but since cello have a different angle we go forward with the frog istead of raising it

Thank you Professor for explaining this. I am learning cello, self taught, playing by ear. I noticed this effect and was puzzled. Now I know I'm not imagining it! I am keen to check how this works out on a piano where the notes cannot be 'bent'.

Yes. It’s hard to keep your arms up for so long. Fortunately, in real pieces you spend as much time in the lower half which gives you recovery time. Try to relax the parts of your arm that are not being used on each stroke.

I very much appreciate your teaching. So generous to share your talents and lessons with us. In this way, you honor Professor Starker in the best way possible. I took up the cello nearly a year ago (as an adult learner). I had always wanted to play, but this was not possible for me as a child. I took both classical guitar and violin lessons--a year of each--in the past, and loved those lessons. Taking up cello as an adult has been humbling. But I will persevere. Your teaching style is so thorough and clear and kind. Thank you for sharing your gifts. Two things: How did you like Bloomington? And I'm glad you didn't have the cigarette hanging from your lips. It's the one habit of Professor Starker *not* to emulate. ;) Merry Christmas!
@emmanuelvacakis446310 ай бұрын
If you try to do it with your hand, you will get too much vertical action and not enough horizontal action, and the sound will be scratchy. Your demonstration comes from Starker’s teaching technique.
@emmanuelvacakis446310 ай бұрын
When the notes don’t sound clear, that means the bow pressure is not sufficient.it usually occurs during string crossings, especially to the higher strings. When this happens, that means you haven’t made the proper preparation with your arm for the string change. Your right, the motion is motivated by the arm. The bow must remain parallel to the bridge otherwise the sound will suffer. But if the bow pressure is not sufficient, it will come up too high and when it lands, the wood of the bow will hit the string through the hair, causing an unpleasant sound.

Thanks for this precious lesson! I have started as an adult at the age of 30 and I do not give up. - never! It has become a passion and I regret that I did not have the chance as a child to learn the cello. Videos like that help a lot to improve my playing. Grüße aus Berlin und herzlichsten Dank!

Thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and expertise. It has always been my desire to learn to play the cello. I took enough lessons in both classical guitar and violin in order to be able to play some music on both of those instruments . (For economic reasons, I quit lessons after first position was comfortable and familiar.) Ive now bought a cello and am three months into lessons. It's both thrilling and humbling--hacking my way through those Suzuki pieces weekly for my very-talented, principal cellist teacher. I'm determined to continue, in spite of the difficult climb.
