i completely agree. the thing that amazed me even more is how shit the book is. it really shows how important the director is. everything in the film was perfection.

Hubert and Vinz represent restlessness and a willing to fight yet Hubert’s discipline and structure and consistency (displayed in the scene where his demolished gym still has him training despite a “reasonable” excuse not to) creates the distinct difference between how and what they’re fighting for. I think the scene where Vinz finds himself at a Muay Thai event showcases this even more in the lack of real intention as to how he ended up there in the first place beyond ( simply knowing it was taken place and a lack of places to be being that his two friends were just picked up by the cops. Vinz exhibits the idea of a fighter whereas Hubert represents a less black and white take on when to fight, maybe stemming from an idea of less to prove to himself. I love this movie.

This film has been my favourite since when I 1st see it in 96, growing up and even now I introduce people I know to this. And they all appreciate it and a lot relate to it. For my self when I was growing up each character is the in embodiment of one or another of my close mates growing up on an estate, and now that I’m older I see each as a way I have felt in situations as I’ve got older.

Excellent review. Just watched this film (10th anniversary edition dvd) haven't seen it goes while. Awesome, gets the heart going. It's so good. Also rewatched Diva, Man bites dog, Gook(very similar to Do the right thing) and will be watching Downfall and Pi. Classics. Japanese films next.

Did he not film it in colour and made it black and white in post production? Iv seen pics of it in colour and he did this in case it wasnt successful in the black and white?

Lol some reallt lazy, obvious as well as borderline moronic analysis. "The choice of 90s clothes holds up really well". 😂😂😂 BRO THE MOVIE WAS MADE IM 1995...it wasnt an artistic "choice"

🥷🏻Never forgot La Haine since first watching it in 96! So many iconic scenes. So slick. So relevant now.

not enough is said about this film. Pulp fiction, which came out a year earlier is lauded by the greater Internet as one of the greatest films ever and frankly it doesn’t hold a candle to La Haine. la haine is what cinema should be in my opinion.

Young boy, enjoy those blessed years of adolescence and youth! And so clever and mature at the same time. You’re so right in your description of this work of art. LaLa Land is a real masterpiece ,and we Can number so many things as you just did: MUSIC, performance, colours, funny dialogues sometimes and a knife in our hearts with that last look. Congratulations for your wise review.

I loved your video! Just finished watching La Haine and after hearing the director’s words that the last few seconds of the movie are the ones that matter (the most) everything fell into place. They really left a mark on me, not that I didn’t love the rest of the film, but I felt like something was missing and the tension kept building up. Cinematography truly is incredible, and your character analysis is so on point!

Great review. Def in my top 5 movies. After seeing it the other night, im not that usually fickle on top 5s but it’s an astounding movie. The theater was laughing at old man’s story but I totally understood it the way you did. Also the theater was silent for the ending and into the credits but felt the urge to clap at such Great movie, very powerful. Living in Philadelphia thru the 2020 riots and days following felt so much like this movie but I never seen the topic so pinned down from another culture. Truly awesome, deep, heavy and inspiring movie.

I was raised in such an environment in early 00's but my family was at that time a wellstanding high educated one. Shame that the neighbourhood went really bad. As young and dump I of course chose to be with these kind of people. Therefore I could understand both worlds in the same time. Man this film is so magical it makes me emotional. When I'm watching it I really feel like Im back again, back to that environment back at that age You never forget the feelings of random excitement, disappointment, danger melancholy, anger, optimism and dreams. No other film can give me this mix of feelings like this one.

the progression and growth in Lees character regarding his vulnerability is my favourite aspect of the entire film. especially when you consider the cannibalism as a metaphor for something like addiction or queerness, the fact that the second Lee realised what Maren was, subconsciously his walls were already lowered without him consciously allowing it. in the diner scene, when he asks "do you think im nice", even though it was him who said it he almost seemed more taken aback by the question than Maren was, to the point of getting up and walking away, not just emotionally detatching from his vulnerability but physically removing himself from it as well. juxtaposed with the scene on the hill near the end, he's become so safe and comfortable around Maren that it takes next to no convincing or assurance for him to tell her everything his entire character was built around hiding from everyone up until that point. throughout the film you see little glimpses of his sensitivity, like the way he took off his shirt after Kayla said he looked "like a faggot" in it, but overall he does his best to come off as a very headstrong, arrogant person. "when youre 140 pounds soaking wet you need a big attitude" and all that. it doesnt come as a shock, which is such an impressive theme throughout the film overall but especially here. it completely contrasts everything his character has been shown to be, but it doesnt come as a shock to him or the audience. by the end of the film, he still has his snarky, badass personality, like in the lines "i ate him right the fuck up" and "i felt high as a motherfucker". the difference is that by the end of the film his self assured mannerisms are the core of his personality, not the fascade, to the point of him allowing Maren to be his safety net instead his exaggerated attitude. it's absolutely beautiful, and as if that wasnt enough the entire thing is brought full circle with the dialogue. at the beginning, he asks "do i seem nice?" and is so uncomfortable that he physically removes himself entirely, but by the end hes safe and vulnerable enough to ask "you dont think im bad?" and lets Maren hold him instead. his vulnerability goes from something that pulls the two apart to being the thing that brings them as close as they get in the entire film, physically and emotionally. I absolutely love Lee's development as a character, he might actually be my favourite character out of any media ive come across.
