As a bassist, Allan Holdsworth is my favorite guitar player. I seem to get lost in his playing because there is no one that can play the way he does. There are many imitators, but only one Holdsworth.

Such a beautiful piece the chords really stand out on their own here when played solo without the rhythm section

What gets me -as a bassist- is trying to figure the bass lines and how they relate to AH's chordal work. Looking Glass being my favorite of all AH tracks, the bass line is a mystery to me. Any insights on this would be greatly aprecciated !

Thanks! Allan would sometimes dictate what he wanted but often left the bass player to decide what to play which would give the chord a different context

I guess for Allan's standards this song isnt that odd but imho its very unique. I love those chord changes especially the #11 chord in the main part. Also interesting how everytime i hear the C in the pedal section, i dont hear a minor third i hear C major sound evem if its not being played
@Bronco541

Knowing Robert (only from watching interviews and such) I seriously wonder if the oddball changes in this song like in the end part were on purpose to try and mess up Adrian or just to mess with OCD listeners XD. I've heard other people say its a mistake which it could be but seeing as this is a studio recording; why not fix it if it was? Although they could've decided to let it in maybe cause it sounded more interesting or my above suggestion.

Haha no it's definitely a thing Robert and Adrian worked on. That polymeter stuff is in multiple songs of theirs, even into the 2000s

I don't wanna sound like I'm boasting at all cause I'm not and certainty no great musician but I totally get what Allan says I think (or I'm completely misunderstanding!). I kind of always thought of chords this way; for example I never understood the argument "proper music instructors" gave about the m7b5 versus minor 6th chord. To me its the same chord, the notes being inverted doesn't matter to my ears, I hear the same thing. Of course the context its in matters and can give a different overall feel or mood, but the chord at heart (for lack of a better term) is essentially the same.

John, amazing work! I am preparing an all-Allan concert with string quartet + voice, bass, drums, solocello, and you have literally saved me weeks of chord voicing-transcribing work! I am eternally grateful, and you will be credited at the concerts. Endomorph is the only tune on the set list that I'm still missing. Can you please do a lesson, or send me chord voicings as a midi file, or tab, or whatever is easiest for you? Anything helps. If you want, I can send you my standard notation scores of the guitar/synthaxe chordal parts of 16 tunes.

Hah im no master. The problem with Endomorph, aside from switching tunings is there are a lot of notes held over into other chords so it can be tricky to teach but I still plan on it. Dunno if it'll be before your event. Send me an email at zombie.guitarist at yahoo

I reckon as a song writer if I had written a song as creative as Ghost of Perdition, I could consider myself satisfied and that I'd written a fluid masterpiece. It's just one of many masterpieces by Mikael though. It's arguably not even the most well written song on its own album! What a fucking genius that dude is.

I think it's a mistake to think of this song, or album as "pop". That segregates it from the rest of Allan's material, and we know if he didn't like it and believe in it, he would *not* have released it. It's just another facet of Allan's music, like "None Too Soon". This song, and the album was my introduction to his music. I read a review of it in Guitar Player, and had been coming across his name over and over. Being a massive Rush fan, my fifteen year old self reasoned if Alex Lifeson thought highly of him, there must be a reason why. So I used my money from mowing lawns and other chores to buy the LP. If I'd heard other material first, I might not have been so impressed. Admittedly, I wasn't crazy about Paul's voice, but I ignored it for the sake of this amazing music I was hearing. That album has probably been an "Allan gateway" for many more than just myself.
@TurrigenousOfficial
@TurrigenousOfficial 24 күн бұрын
A friend of mine had a very similar story. In the context of his discography it's very much "pop". Panic Station and this cut as well as Road Games all could have been on the radio. But Allan must have shyed away because after this he never had a live singer and used them rarely on songs.
