A really good attempt to explain impedance. But ohm's law is kind of different for DC than AC. You invoked "the water analogy" which kinda works for DC, but totally falls apart for AC. You showed a logarithmic chart showing freq on the x axis and Current on the y axis. Probably you left most americans scratching their heads as they are a bit dim. [Trump sic]. I have a a pair of 4 ohm impedance ELAC 3 way ported bookshelf speakers. Andrew Jones designed these speakers. I was concerned about the low impedance and Andrew Jones explained that due to the fast dynamic transient frequency changes that it all kind of averages out. He also pointed out that this is safe for "flagship receivers and amps." Finally, he added not to drive the amp too hard, but if I did the thermistors on the heat sinks would shut off the amp until it cooled and no harm done. I thank you for taking on this difficult and technical subject.

I'm not a stupid man, and am well-educated but have no idea what you're talking about! Not your fault, it's me. I have some nice Technics speakers from the April '78, and when I brought them home, I noticed they were 6 Ohm, while the hi-fi world prefers 8-Ohm. I hooked them up to my high-powered Marantz receiver and they cranked! Didn't seem to matter! Never a problem. Still got them in my closet, too big for my little apartment. I really should check the cones, they are 47 years old now! I was so happy my dad bought them for me for graduating high school. I drove him crazy with those things blasting heavy metal in the basement and shaking the whole house! He'd be flicking the lights on & off, stomping his feet on the floor, and hollering at the top of his lungs to get my attention over the racket! What a great father he was, God I miss him....

it'd be a great feature if you could connect this to your tonearm (when it plays the record) or it attaches to tonearm/listens for music (only if attached to tonearm)

So here is something that I recently stumbled on. As a beginner, I have been toying with the idea of learning how to djay. I have been an Apple Music subscriber for a long time and have an extended list of songs / playlists in different genres. Yet, a lot of these DJ apps won’t sync with Apple Music. iTunes on the other hand, does. This would be the only reason why I would probably have to download music vs. streaming. Unless you know of any other djay app out there that is able to sync with Apple????? I would really like to know. Thanks.

If you don't know the impedance of a speaker, is there a way to figure it out? I was thinking maybe driving it at different frequencies and testing the current draw........

Simple...they need to feel better than someone, but cant do it in a tangible and objective way, so they choose something entirely subjective, like audio and sound. Theyve been suckered into spending tens of thousands on audio equipment, and in order to justify their stupidity, they pretend they have super human hearing and cam detect subtleties in sound that the regular person can't.

As a general rule, especially with guitar/bass amps, the speaker must be able to handle twice what the amp can deliver. A 100 watt Marshall? The speaker cabinet must be rated for 200 watts RMS. Ask any amp technician. It's a safety margin that can't be ignored.

Never forget that a woofer, by design, is a motor and a generator at the same time. That’s the missing element in all amp specs. It’s much more than looking at impedance, and power.

After 10 years of having Technics SH-EH 790 its time to upgrade and man thats difficult task ! I want to stick to 3 way system but there are limited options to chose from and to be satisfied with purchase i should be aiming at ~4k $ for simple stereo system and im not happy with that. 2 way is something im not convinced to yet so im a little bit pissed. Bad thing is i allready sold my Technics 😂

No, resistance does not become impedance when you apply AC, Ohm's law still apply to a resistive load even if you apply AC. When an inductor is driven with AC, the impedance aka resistive value changes in a coil, and this is what is called impedance. In other words, the resistive value of the coil changes and does so with frequency also. In general, the DC resistance of a coil is much lower than when AC is applied. Think if an AC motor is switched on (DC applied), it draws a lot of current, but when running the motor draws a lot less current (AC applied).

I bought a smart TV. It was an LG. My old one has crappy sound so bad, it's hard to understand people talking. Anyway, the smart one kept defaulting to HDMI 1 when there is nothing connected to that. (I do't know if there was a way to change that) In orer to watch my normal channels i have to do about 5 remote clicks to get there. On the 3rd day, it stopped responding and I could no longer get my News channels. So, I had to return it for a refund. I like the remote on my old TV which has talk and change channels. The new one did also but doesn't work with the old channels I use to watch. Back it goes.

It's all about current. And, how the circuit is designed. If you put a 4 ohm speaker across an 8 ohm amp, it'll be louder, but, is the circuit designed to handle twice the current across the coil?? It'll for sure, heat the final transistor and, it may change bias, which can and will affect distortion.

Component video or YpBpR is a 480i video signal, hdmi can carry anywhere from 480i to 4k depending on the cable. If you’re hooking up a dvd player to an old tv you want to choose component as that’s the highest signal and what the medium was designed to be viewed over but if you can plug your device in with hdmi on flat panel that’s the one you want to go with.

I used to love buying a definitive version of a movie I loved with DTS audio when you would initiate it on the DVD player it would light up and then it would light up on your amplifier and it sounded great. Fun fact is my PlayStation 2 was the only thing I could ever get to play a DTS audio CD via fiber optic cable. Another fun fact is that if you played Vice City which gave you an option to play it in DTS it was purposely encoded without using the center channel which I always found weird.

Nice understandable explanation. I will start my process of elimination. I have a few questions. You mentioned plugging the subwoofer into the same outlet as the rest of the system can you plug the subwoofer into a regular power strip that’s plugged into the outlet where the stereo is. Number two, even when my subwoofer has been in the AUTO position when it’s not powered up the back panel where the connections are can get very hot to the touch, can you explain that. Is there a recommended subwoofer position in the room because I do have mine sitting about 8 feet away plugged into a separate outlet because where my stereo is I don’t have room on the floor next to It. Should it be placed next to my stereo console.

I guess the impedance can never be lower then the value of the resitance. Anyhow, my speakers are marked with impedance of 4 ohms, but when i measure the resistans i I get 6 ohms. This should, I think, not be possible. But I measure in the wire connectors (disconnected, of course), but is there some circuits in the cabinet that make the measurement wrong, or is it purely a fraud from the manufacturer?

I have a 11X15 1/2 feet dedicated home theater room that was a medium size room and I love it. I have a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos setup, Unfortunately I just use elevation speakers until I can get four Atmos ceiling speakers and two nice subwoofers until I can upgrade them and again, it’s still a work in progress as I’ve been upgrading for years. I have a TCL 2023 85” MiniLED TV, a Onkyo RZ-50, Panasonic UB-820, Apple TV 4K second edition, Pioneer by Andrew Jones front stage with towers for the left and right and obviously the AJ center speakers, Polk T-50s towers for the rear(I know they’re inexpensive towers, but they’re surprisingly good for rears and the tweeters are at ear level and the surround effects are great), a Monoprice 12” subwoofer and I know that it’s just a basic low-end subwoofer, but it’s still surprisingly good and not boomy, Onkyo elevation speakers, but like I said, that’s going to be upgraded and ceiling mounted. So I have a really good setup for it medium sized room. Either way, it sounds awesome and while the elevation speakers suck and the subwoofer needs upgrading as well, it’s a humble work in progress. I’m a disabled US Army veteran on a fixed income, I’ve been able to upgrade a component at a time and it’s worked out well over time. L So while I could have just went with a stereo system, I would lose out on a basic Dolby Atmos setup. Either way a good layout. If you only have a 11x11’ or 12X12’ room, it wouldn’t work out, especially a Dolby Atmos 7.2,X setup would be overkill for ME obviously. I have enough room for two rows of home theater seats two side by side, which ilia plenty for a household of just three people. I can’t put in four subwoofers as there’s no room for two subwoofers in the front. Either way it’s a good setup for the space. Like I said, great video and happy New Years Eve!
