Smith & Wesson has been sucking. They didn’t repair my revolver after the framed crack during normal use. Do not buy any J frame!!

Just got mine last week. Same thing as you. Plus the cylinder was tough to turn. Took it to gunsmith who took it apart he said there was still small metal shavings on inside of frame. It’s much better not to but horrible of S&W. Must have been built when the workers were knowing their jobs were going south

I really want S&W to iron these out. Now that it's been a few months, I'm hoping QA has been cleaned up. These revolvers really stand as a great option for folks if they're made to the quality that people expect

I like the configuration of the new, improved sights; the shrouded hammer and the fully enclosed forend of the ejector rod. A standing inconvenience to me is the short extractor rod, which does not fully eject empty cases every time. This has been a theoretical drawback since the inception of the 'snubby', either I, J or K frame. On the smaller frames, the length of the barrel does restrict ejector length. I find that is less of a factor in K frame revolvers. But - I guess I want my cake and eat it as well. Also, I have a very strong aversion to the 'modern' design, including the Hillery Clinton Memorial Hole, deletion of the barrel pin and such. That is also a personal issue. The sights, fore and aft, look very good. I can use the older, smaller sights pretty well, but I like the idea of adjusting windage without the use of a fine file. The bright colors on the front sight likely simplify that use also. I note both sights seem to be smoothed so as not to be a snag problem. With all that, it does not seem to be a promising revolver for one not used to double action shooting. Which covers a lot of folks. Regarding sights: 1. The standards for accuracy is quite loose. That particular type of arm is for maximum concealment and use on a good sized target at less than five yards in the main. It was never (and should not be) considered a twenty-five yard target pistol. 2. One should not confuse 'grouping' of shots with correct alignment of sights. A tight bundle of shot holes some two feet from the properly aligned sights is a good group. One adjusts the sights, by tapping lightly, tapping vigorously or filing the rear sight notch will correct it. On the other hand, a twelve inch group evenly surrounding the properly aligned sights will NOT be corrected by fiddling with the sights. All in all, that is a good report. I do carry a M36 from time to time when I cannot carry anything larger. They do as they ought.

My cat loves when i mess around with my revolvers aswell. She always lays on my ruger GP100 6" barrel. I think its the clicking it does. Yeah, i wouldn't mess with those airweights man. I owned a 637 for a little while and it sucked bad. I sold it off and now have a chief special 36-10. Now that is a nice little j-frame. I did have to send it back tho bc when it was sent it was missing the front bolt locking pin, the forcing cone looked like it was cut with a blowtorch and a severely pitted barrel. Smith made it right tho, it only took 2 months 😂 i hate waiting on a firearm to come back

I understand that a flashlight is a very effective tool, but I’m not sure I’m willing to carry one in my pocket everywhere since my concealed carry doesn’t have a rail for one. I’ve been looking at some of the slimmer flat options, but I’m also not sure about those. I wish S&W would just put a rail on their 4” Shield Plus’, at least the Performance Center versions.

I'm not much of a revolver guy (For self defense purposes; love them as range guns) but I ended up snagging a 442UC because it resolved all my complaints regarding snubbies; improved sights, a grip that filled your hand and allowed for a high grip, and chamfered cylinder holes to make it easier to run speedloaders with. Unfortunately I fell into having the same problem as you did when I took it to the range; out of about 70 rounds fired, I had about 6 malfunctions where the trigger refused to reset until I took my fingers to either side of the trigger and manually pulled it forward again. Managed to repeat the issue with snap caps in it, albeit less frequently at about once every 20-25 dry fires. Got it back from S&W after sending it for repair, turnaround came out to be about six weeks, and ironically the first time I pulled the trigger on it I had the same problem happen again, but it hasn't happened since, albeit I've only managed to put about 50 rounds through it so far. I do hope that it proves to be reliable over the long term, but my normally positive expectations for S&W revolvers has taken quite a hit after seeing they were willing to ship out a revolver designed for self defense use in such shape in the first place.

Don't get me wrong a Smith & Wesson j frame is probably my favorite gun. That being said this new trend of them becoming popular as carry guns lately is good but they should not be used as a main weapon. Backup only. I've seen more than enough people lose shootouts using a j frame because they simply didn't have the firepower or capacity to compete but were forced into a gunfight anyway.
@gracedagostino52315 ай бұрын
I'm 69 and have never seen one shootout, let alone someone using a j frame in a shootout. You on the other hand have seen several people lose a shootout with a j frame. I'm guessing by losing you mean they all died with their empty j frame. The cop arriving on the scene must have said "omg he only had a j frame, if not he would still be alive" Where the hell do you live where you're seeing all these people losing shootouts with a j frame?

A lesson I learned the hard way was to wait for a new product, any new product, to work out the production problems, & it usually takes about a year.
@gunmonkey65455 ай бұрын
In general I agree with you, but S&W has been having QC issues for a while now with their revolvers. I don’t know how widespread it is, but I had to send back 2 new ones (442 & 43c) for repair. The 442 simply had a yoke problem, but the 43c needed a new main spring, yoke repair and the forcing cone had to be cut. That’s an awful lot of work to be done for an $800 revolver. Again, not sure how widespread the problem is but they have been making both of these models for a while now.

Wow! A special release pistol and S&W can’t it right. Doesn’t give you in confidence in their other revolvers does it. There is lot of trash talk about TAURUS and CHARTER ARMS that is applicable to S&W too. The lesson here is buy a 30 year old S&W or Colt revolver if you want a quality product.

They’re nice revolvers. I have a 442 & 642. The UC has some nice upgrades. I think 25 yards is a stretch for those guns. Not that they can’t hit, just at defensive distances. Looks like those 148 WCs is your round. I use Buffalo Bore hard cast in mine.
