You forgot to mention to double loop through the pully loop/bite. This allows you to not need to pinch, which often loses its tension.

I’d have added an additional locking hitch on the 1st knot as well. Wind velocity can potentially loosen the flapping tag end. Better safe…

1:28 if you had a real block and tackle, I might believe you're getting 3to1. i'd be shock if you were hitting 2to1 with a truck hitch
@BrandonNelson
@BrandonNelson Ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. It's made me think of how to demonstrate it without a block and tackle. There are two elements to a mechanical advantage: Distance, and force. The distance is easy to demonstrate. I'll just set up a trucker's on the ground, attached to a weight plate or something at the starting end. I'll show that if I pull one foot of line through the loop on the trucker's the plate only moves 4 inches. I'd need to pull the line 3 feet to move it 1 foot -- hence, 3:1. What will be more interesting is to run the truckers hitch across a scale, and show that I can pull 3 times more "weight" or force with the hitch, versus just using a rope with no trucker's tied into it. I'll work on it. Check back in. Thanks for the inspiration.

Paddled 151.87 miles on Lake Padden in Bellingham, WA. Love Epic, love Greg and Oscar and have paddled with them and learned from them for nearly 20 years. Cheers to you!

1:15 Isn't it a 2 to 1 mechanical advantage, not 3 to 1?
@BrandonNelson
@BrandonNelson 2 ай бұрын
Ryan, great question and a popular one. The answer is 3:1. Do a quick search for a “Z drag“, a simple mechanical advantage system that rafters and climbers use. It’s the exact same configuration as a truckers hitch. There is a diagram on Wikipedia that shows it really clearly. Thanks for the comment and best of luck with your knots!

Can someone tell me the name of the 1st knot, he says it so fast I can’t understand what he says
@BrandonNelson
@BrandonNelson 3 ай бұрын
It’s called the G.E. Knot, though no one outside the river guide community seems to have heard of it or what its origin is. You can use anything you like there, a bowline or a Clovehitch, But this one works well because it unties so quickly.

Thanks for letting me know Martin. I’m gonna work on a video that doesn’t follow the format or the title of the channel, and slows it way, way down. Don’t give up on it though, whoever you need to learn it from, once you have it, you will never forget it and you will use it thousands of times.

Question: not sure if I’m not doing this right, but I’m finding that the half-hitches at the end will slowly release their grip and eventually loosen the whole trucker’s hitch.
@BrandonNelson
@BrandonNelson 3 ай бұрын
Hey Sam, great question. This knot can be tied with 1000 different types of line, strap, webbing, shoelaces, all sorts of things. The material determines how you need to lock it off. For example, slippery nylon rope does not hold the hitch very well, so I will often double or triple the number of final half hitches. You can also do the first half hitch leaving an extra long loop, and then tie that back onto itself a couple times. Whatever you need to do, so that it is appropriate for the material you are using as line, to make 100% sure it is locked off. There should be no loosening whatsoever, and that is totally achievable. Good luck!

Lost you at "twist some of this rope". Tag end? Load end?
@BrandonNelson
@BrandonNelson 3 ай бұрын
Hi Bob. Let's start at the first hitch: you attach one end of the line to one side of the trailer. Then you cross over the load with the running end, and pass it under the bar on the other side of the trailer. Let's call that line that is now laying across the entire load, the "laying-on-the-load line." THAT is the section you want to grab, make three twists in it to form a loop, and then -- on that same laying-down-line just a little closer to the running end of the line, pull a loop of rope up and through your twisted loop. That's your pulley, that you then pass the running end through, before pulling tight and finishing the knot. Does that help? Let me know if that description makes sense. Thanks for the question.

Pops taught me this knot as a kid, wasn’t a trucker, but was a Boy Scout, and knew his knots. Never called it a truckers hitch, and honestly I don’t remember what he called it. But I’ll say, I use this knot consistently at work, it makes all the young kids scratch their heads like “How’d he get that so tight?”, and the old heads go “you know your knots!” Thanks dad! lol
