@@mobilemiall not much to draft off of on a velomobile. The whole point is the shell streamlines the air to almost completely eliminate turbulence behind the velomobile. That means there’s not anything to really draft off of. Plus these things are so aero they cut through the air and headwinds as if there’s nothing there. A client of mine earlier today was out in high winds and commented on how easy it was to ride into the wind compared to the road bike he used to ride. Said it was as if there was no wind at all. That matches my experience. I have a hard time figuring out which direction the wind is coming from when I ride.

@ I’ve ridden in 45+mph wind gusts. Little push to the side and then it corrects itself. I’ve only once been hit by a crosswind that nearly posed a problem. That crosswind would have taken me down on any other bike and was pushing the other vehicles on the road around too. I was able to correct before I hit the curb.

I used the space inside Axels' XL- hotspot to put the two cameras inside. Also a gps-receiver. With the Varia radar/light at the rear and blinking lights on the sides my Hotspot is chock-full 😅 My old eyes appreciate the colour (less blue-ish) and the very wide beam of the IQ-XL lamp. When there is no traffic around I switch the high-beam on and can drive like it`s daytime. Some light shines on the front of the velomobile, which makes being seen from the side much more likely than with reflective stickers only. People can actually see the front part of the velomobile in the dark! In the daytime I get many thumbs-up for having such good lighting.

Have you got any lighting on the sides (like the amber markers on a truck trailer) to highlight the long low silhouette? Even some retro reflective tape can make a huge increase in visibility and be the difference between being seen or squashed. I don't know what the lighting rules are there but for me in UK the biggest improvement in visibility I have made so far is an amber strobe on the back of my wheelchair with an unusual flashing pattern. An interesting video, thanks. I'm all in favour of being seen, especially at night. However, I do think it's possible to 'go over the top' with lights. I have two head lights, one of medium brightness and the other which is far more powerful and enables me to ride safely at night at a reasonable speed. When vehicles are approaching me, I turn off the bright light out of respect for drivers. At the rear, I have a flashing red light and a solid one which, along with a decent reflector is good enough to be seen. If drivers don't see me, they're not looking! My point about 'going over the top' is when your panoply of lights becomes irritating to drivers with the potential for bad driving. I enjoy your videos and can sense that you are really passionate about velos and riding them.

@@jeremyyork3538 a flashing and solid forward and a flashing and solid rear works well for me and is what I have in this video. At night I turn off the rear flasher because I think it’s too blindly bright. The IQ-XL works well in this new hotspot because of how the cutoff pattern is set. It’s actually less blinding for oncoming drivers than the IQ-X in the original hotspot. I only activate the high beam when there are no oncoming cars. You can fit wider tires on the velomobile I ride. Up to 40mm in front and 35mm in the rear. I sometimes use wider tires with tread in winter, but the rolling resistance is a lot higher (meaning more energy needed to go fast.) For 170 mile ride, I want every advantage I can get. Easier to just dodge the potholes. I've got suspension on all 3 wheels anyway. I just don't like rough pavement because it doesn't roll nice and costs speed. But from my experience behind a steering wheel the speed of a car is considered a universe-wide constant that may under no circumstance be interrupted. Or something like that. Can also be a case of mental inertia. Or both of that. Drivers are way too insulated from the surrounding. They can no longer really estimate their speed. At least that is the mentality in city areas in the USA. So people try to make up extra time when they are driving. But they also do not realize the impact their driving has an show dangerous it is, just like you say. @@musekidd of course the goal is to avoid an accident by riding defensively, which is what I did, but remember the aggressor in the situation is the suv driver that created a dangerous situation for 3 other vehicles on the road by their choice to be impatient. I think it’s critical as cyclists to keep our focus on what caused this dangerous situation rather than falling into the temptation of somehow passing the blame to the cyclist for existing at all. State law is that I need to move into the car lane to make the left turn rather than remain in the bike lane. Had the driver waited a couple seconds longer I would have been out of their way and they could have continued down the road well above the legal speed limit again. This type of bullying is dangerous for everyone on the road. The point of the video is to encourage drivers to allow themselves more time when traveling so they don’t feel the need to rush leading to these types of situations. Let’s keep our focus on that and help make the roads safer for everyone!

First time seeing your channel. Something clicked after seeing the turkeys and realized you are in Edina. Cahill is problematic as it’s 25 mph and easy to drive 35-45 on that road, and police don’t really ticket people there. Stay safe and I’ll hope to see the orange mobile out in the roads. @@drulifson yes. Cahill Rd. I’m impressed someone local watched my channel! I’m now riding a white/red Bülk MK1 and occasionally a red Bülk Urban. I ride Cahill several times a week on my way to the high school to work with some of the band kids. I did once see an officer with a speed trap set up, but I’ve noticed police enforcement of speed limits on the cities is pretty rare. Cahill is one of few bike routes, so it’s really a shame the speed limit isn’t enforced there. No reason to drive that fast on such a short section of road. I stopped taking 70th to Antrim because of unsafe drivers and go up the hill on Gleason instead.

Human animals did not evolve to make decisions at more than walking speed. Hence the grunts, clicks and snorts from some drivers when they have to 'engage brain' to not kill you. When making a left turn like this, it's best to pre-drift to the left after you enabled your blinkers. In case you need to stop before taking the actual turn, any traffic from behind is able to pass on your right side.

People say they love driving, but it's a fucking drag. You sit there, immobile. With lane assist and cruise control you barely have to do anything. Even without those, the things you actively have to do are very minimal. Yet you have to keep your focus on the road at all times, and due to the speed you cant really take in your surroundings but have to drive around with a tunnel vision for the road. Does sound a bit like torture. If sitting in a car and being unable to do anything else was so great, people wouldn't mind traffic jams at all. But it's not great, it's boring and exhausting. Doesn't excuse shit driving, but i think that's the explanation for a loooot of shit driving. I really started hating driving in a car after i got into cycling because its so boring

Sounds like you haven't discovered advanced driving. While you will just be looking past your bonnet, as an advanced driver you are very busy as you drive constantly running through the IPSGA system, scanning ahead from near to far distance then the same behind, prioritising potential hazards, forming a plan to deal with them by priotiry and running through the system again as youdrive re-evaluating. As an advanced driver you will also be using the limit system to drive as fast as possible to maintain good progress safely. My cycling benefits from the advanced training as alot of it is independant of what you drive or ride.
