Yes. John moved to Japan where his wife YoYo was from in 2012 and enjoyed peaceful countryside life and playing in his home studio. He passed away in 2016.

I learned to play drums with John in the late 1970's early 80's, took a lesson a week on a Sunday for 8 years, in the basement at the original shop in Golden Sq which was on the Soho side of the square. I think John was a session drummer for Jack Parnell' big band and other swing type bands back in the day. Thanks for this video as it reminds me of what a patient kind man he was. I knew he had passed away after a visit to the new Foote shop in Store St, not sure when though.

This isn't really beguine. This is a rhumba.

The beguine is similar to the rumba; both can have a 'ta-tadala - ta ta'.. rhythm. I think the bass drum pattern on beats 1, 3 and 4 makes it a Beguine in this case.

Leicester Drum School i Can confirm, this Is not beguine at all! Beguine Come from Martinique and i am from Martiinique so you can trust me. To have the real rythm look for "fanfan biguine" for example.

I am conflicted because I am all for respecting one's elders, and especially tried mentors with a whopping number of years of playing experience; but this is simply not an authentic rendition of the Guaracha, or any other Afro-Cuban rhythm.

Triangle Emperor Timbale Mastur - I don't think anyone claimed it was authentic. When playing in an American or European dance band you will often see 'Beguine' or 'Bolero' or other rhythm called for on the chart. The drummer is expected, on a conventional jazz drum kit, to play something that the audience can dance to, that the band can play to, that fits into a jazz swing orchestra context but which hints at the latin beats the arrangements are based on. It looks to me like this guy is doing a good job of explaining these dance band drummer's adaptions of latin rhythms.

isn't this much more of a press roll? PLEASE REPLY!!

seems like more of a buzz roll instead of an open stroke roll, so calling it a 7 stroke roll buzzed would probably be more of a correct name for it

Hey Marek, I'm glad you like the videos. I had a great pleasure studying with John and capturing all exercises performed with great skill, plus all the tips and wisdom aquired through more half a century and teachings passed on from Max Abrams, Ed Shaughnessy and Louie Bellson. John has moved to Japanese city Takayama-shi with his wife Yoyo. I'll certainly pay him a visit when I'm around that part of the globe. Meanwhile, I have emailed him your comment. Keep bangin' the skins! Best rgds, DJ :-)

Thank you Binky. I will share these kind words with John via email. I have also covered & recorded most of the Latin rhythms with John, and I will upload them gradually, once I've finished advanced jazz independence. Cheers! :-)

Well done Damian. I studied with John from 1995 to 2002. We used to finish every lesson with him playing along to his recording (and transcript) of Sarah Vaughan's 'How long has this been going on? or Louie Bellson's 'Sweet Tooth' depending on whether I wanted to dance out into Golden Square to a Bossa Nova or Swing. Absolutely brilliant days and a fantastic teacher.
