I'm having a very similar issue with an older 76' M116 engine. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and replace the pump. Cheers!

Hey, I have the same problem with my 85 280se; I replaced the whole fuel delivery system(Pump, filters, and accumulator, but I still have that noise. Also, when you put it in drive, it does not have enough power to reach above 40km/h, and sometimes stalls while driving it. How did you fix this issue?

What are your thoughts on the self leveling system? I have a ‘90 560sel and it too came to me with the SLS disabled. I think I need to find some stiffer springs from a donor car and put it to the proper conventional configuration, the stock springs I think are too soft without the support of the rest of the SLS system.
@classicjalopy Жыл бұрын
The SLS springs are very soft by design and if you're going to remove the SLS you MUST replace the springs too. However, there were no 560SELs without SLS so finding the right springs is not easy. The rear springs were matched to the model and even options ticked, so maybe a very highly optioned 420SEL would be ok, but better would be a european 500. Most of the time the aftermarket springs are far too hard and make the car ride like an old pickup truck, not an S-Class. In my case, I put the system back in and I couldn't be happier. The cars run so well with SLS! My experience in planning the install: www.classicjalopy.com/2020/05/planning-to-reinstate-the-w126-self-leveling-suspension/ and then having it done: www.classicjalopy.com/2021/06/reinstalling-w126-self-leveling-rear-suspension/
@Lizpolygigiblissgirl Жыл бұрын
@@classicjalopy Thanks for the reply. I am considering both options. I appreciate your optimism regarding the stock SLS system and keeping it working nice and proper. In my sleuthing so far it looks like the original components are still in place. I plan on getting into this project very soon.

Damn it, we support the criminal in Moscow. Putin can only be defeated if we implement an immediate energy-saving lockdown. No more private trips. Heating only at night and only one room with light and electricity, you can simply set that at the fuse box....Cities could, for example, switch off every second street light and companies could switch off their neon signs. We can initially limit driving to pure business trips and hospital trips, etc...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you tell me what the specification of the red colour used on this car. I have a car of a similar colour and is about to be resprayed and I would like to to get the colour right. My car has been reimported back to the UK from New Zealand. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
@classicjalopy4 жыл бұрын
The original colour was Regal Red, not sure if that helps. It was a standard colour on many British cars of the era, not just the slough Citroens. It would have been a bit darker than my old car - looking inside the boot and engine bay the original colour is still present and its a bit darker - It would appear when the car was painted in the 90s they went with a lighter shade.

I don’t understand how the car started, i understand he primed it. Was there an on board compressor or was it a spring?
@johnanstiss20924 жыл бұрын
The spark control lever should be fully retarded. Prime and get a piston TDC. Move the spark control lever to advance, a spark is created and the engine starts. It takes a lot of practice.
@keithammleter38244 жыл бұрын
The engine has 2 sources of ignition: a) standard Kettering ignition where the electrical energy comes from the battery, and b) trembler ignition (as on model T Fords). Trembler is similar to a buzzer. First, he turned the engine over enough times to ensure every cylinder has drawn in a charge of fuel/air mixture (>2 full turns). Providing you don't wait too long, this charge will remain in the cylinder in gaseous form while the engine is not running. Second, he retarded the ignition so that the sparkplugs are not fired until after top dead centre - this is so the engine cannot attempt to run backwards. Third, he turned on the tremble ignition - you can hear the trembler buzzing. Trembler ignition gives a full strength spark regardless of whether the engine is rotating or not, and regardless of exact timing if it isn't, as the plug is fired on each tremble. So, at this point any cylinder that happens to be a bit past TDC and in the power stroke gets its charge of gas fired off, forcing the piston down and starting the engine. This was a standard way of starting early Rolls Royces. If you pushed down the accelerator or opened the hand throttle when switching off, it will start this way (usually) later if it has been stopped for not too long, without any hand cranking at all. You could, if you were lucky, get other cars with trembler ignition (eg Ford) to start this way - but they didn't have enough cylinders, so the chances of having one left in the power stroke were not very high.
@arburo14 жыл бұрын
@@keithammleter3824 Sorry, but you are wrong. This age of Ghost has trembler and magneto. The Kettering coil was not introduced until around 1918, when it replaced the trembler. Starting on the switch, as it is called, uses the trembler as this gives a continuous spark for quite a large angle of the crankshaft, allowing an easy start if the piston is just after TDC. I had a 1933 20/25 and even with Kettering ignition it would start on the switch soon after being switched off.
@keithammleter38244 жыл бұрын
@@arburo1 : You state that I was wrong, but actually I was right except for a minor error: Yes, the main (running) ignition was not Kettering - it was indeed magneto. The rest of what you said, beginning at "Starting on the switch...." and ending at ….TDC" is in exact agreement with what I said. "... the plug is fired on each tremble....." You need to read more carefully.
@arburo14 жыл бұрын
@@keithammleter3824 I read exactly what you wrote and you were correct in all respects except for the attribution of the ignition system. The only thing you were wrong about was Kettering. I never said you were wrong about anything else. You will see that I used three paragraphs. The first corrects your error. The second reiterates your correct statements and adds a bit more information. The third extends the debate to include starting on the switch on the later Kettering ignition cars. We should all be willing to learn something new every day and not jump to taking offence when none is given. Have a good day!
