he had made a bond with her and that necklace should have been her surety against the wayward and foolish advice of Polonius. Ophelia deferred to the filial invocations of her father Polonius. she and Hamlet both were so Christian in orientation, that there was no choice for either of them. this is said to be a Christian play. the fallen king, Hamlet's father, represents fallen pride and unrepentant sin. the remarried queen represents defiling of family names and taint of ancient bloodlines. the usurping brother represents the Satan and the only married person who shall not live.

The most honest, real authentic Hamlet… not the usual whimsical prose of overacting from stage performers that augment their status with long pauses as if the pauses reflecting acting. Hamlet would be manic and depressed and sling between the two … Mel understood this and his performance breathed life into Shakespeare soliloquies …

Poor Ophelia. She doesn't know why he's rejecting her. She doesn't deserve it. No wonder she went mad and drowned herself.

Gibson's stellar performance here is by far the richest, most sanguine, and emotionally true as the Prince of Denmark. Who'll argue with that?

Although I'm a recent addition to the Campbell Scott fan club, and have been delighted to get to know some of his work, I confess that I could not imagine him playing this role: HAMLET! I mean, come on! We're talking Shakespeare! Imagine my surprise to see what he does with this part! It's simply jaw-dropping in passion and originality! New and fresh and powerful! Wow! Thanks for posting!

Helena is not the Ophelia type. She could play an excellent Lady Macbeth, but not the delicate girl who goes mad after H kills her father. Ophelia is a fabulous character, but you need a certain sensitivity to play it. HBC is a bit too tough and crafty for that. Or maybe it's because I asociate her too much with Belatrix and Mrs Lovett

She did play an excellent Ophelia lol. It's so silly to put her in a box. She's a great actress and very versatile. She is great at playing vulnerable 'English Rose' characters and was even unfortunately typecast as that.

If only Franco Zeffirelli had let Helena do Ophelia’s brilliant “Oh, what a noble mind is here o’er thrown” speech. It was the same thing with Alan Bates and Pete Postlethwaite, they were denied their chances to really shine, just so Mel Gibson could have yet another speech.

Hard for me to accept that Ophelia laments Hamlet's descent into madness. He reacts to the silhouettes at the window as anyone might. He feels spied upon and betrayed, but is there any wild madness? Also, the offer to return the gifts misses the mark IMHO. It should be a tiara, or a pendant.
@kevinbec3935
@kevinbec3935 2 жыл бұрын
Old comment is old but Ophelia's comment about "their perfume lost" makes it seem as though the gifts smelled sweet when they were given. I also agree with your judgment that he wasn't mad until he saw the figures at the window. Plummer's performance also makes him sound much calmer than in some other filmed versions. Also - and this is question is more for future commenters - have you ever considered the possibility that, being sane and well college-educated, what Hamlet said about women and marriage is the truth no one else seems able to recognize? Not to mention that it explains his behavior towards his mother throughout the play
@jamesduggan7200
@jamesduggan7200 2 жыл бұрын
@@kevinbec3935 well, it was typical once to scent letters sent, so what you say about perfume makes good sense. The only problem is that it is hard to place a prop nearby to complete the line, like the candlesticks in Macbeth's Tomorrow speech, the fountain in Othello's Toad speech.

These two are very good. Especially I like how Ophelia betrays her confusion and divided loyalties. It's not an easy scene. They do it well. Later on, Hamlet will stab Polonius, in part bc he's enraged here. He, the Prince doesn't like to be spied on, nor does he like the idea of his girl being used to betray him. The next time they're together tho, Hamlet makes sure to show the enite court his true feelings toward her.

I love the way Kline hams up "Hamlet". I think it worked well, tho I wouldn't advise anyone else trying it. . . It's hard for me to buy into this Ophelia about to lose her mind and drown herself. That seems like a condition that develops across time rather than suddenly appear. Just my opinion tho.
@jamesduggan7200
@jamesduggan7200 5 жыл бұрын
They deliver the lines well, tho without the subtlety that makes Hamlet so fascinating. Also, the passion between them doesn't work well with the observation of Claudius, who deems it not love. Nor does it work well with the next time we seem them together, at the play.
@jamesduggan7200
@jamesduggan7200 5 жыл бұрын
She's a relatively plain Ophelia. It works. It works with a gorgeous Ophelia, with a worldly Ophelia, with a wacky one, etc. The most valuable thing is highlighting that the girl who (apparently) commits suicide has a relationship with the guy who seems obsessed with suicide, murder, and death in general. I'm not sure that the lack of chemistry here works well with the grave scene tho.
