The most honest, real authentic Hamlet… not the usual whimsical prose of overacting from stage performers that augment their status with long pauses as if the pauses reflecting acting. Hamlet would be manic and depressed and sling between the two … Mel understood this and his performance breathed life into Shakespeare soliloquies …

Mel Gibson is good in this scene. He is not like David Tennant in that his voice is more powerful than most renditions of Hamlet, which brings a certain aggressiveness to the character that most actors don't bring. This does not cause his performance to suffer for it, rather he brought a different feeling to it, one of real anger (and possibly madness, as this was his plan).

Mel is good in this. Not being like Olivier or Branagh or any other typical British pretty boy doesn't mean his performance is bad. He brought a different energy to it. His voice is more powerful than most Hamlets, which brings a certain agression to the character that most Hamlets don't bring. Another underrated Hamlet is Richard Burton.

You might want to check out all reviews of Burton's Hamlet. I think you might enjoy them. He was far from underrated. In fact, it was a groundbreaking performance. There are strong indications in both this scene and other places in the play that Hamlet has gotten Ophelia pregnant. When he refers to her as a "nymph" he means she isn't a virgin. Sadly, this is the way a young man of Hamlet's time would treat a woman he had conquered.
@margaridabastos21799 жыл бұрын
Well I think you are wrong. Yes there might be indications that Ophelia is no longer a vigin but there are no indications that Ophelia is pregnant. "Are you honest?" Has two meanings, he both refers to her virginity and the fact that she isn't being sincere and fair with him. Hamlet knows what Ophelia is trying to do by returning the letters he sent her, she is trying to trick him, she is being used by Polonius and Cladius to see the cause of Hamlet's "madness". During this scene Hamlet realizes that outward beauty has nothing to do with the interior of someone. Although I must say this movie is not the one with the best dramaturgy. For me the best one is the 1996 Hamlet with Kenneth Branagh as Hamlet, go watch it if you didn't. :)
@tompalmer59869 жыл бұрын
Read Ophelia's comments when she is mad. Also, Hamlet telling Polonius - "Conception is a blessing, but not as your daughter might conceive - look to it." There are several strong indications that Hamlet has gotten Ophelia pregnant. It is highly probable that she is.
@margaridabastos21799 жыл бұрын
Oh believe me I've read Ophelia comments when she is mad a hundred times and it gives no indication whatsoever that she is pregnant. The reason Hamlet tells Ophelia to go to a nunnery ("Get thee to a nunnery: why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners?") is that at that moment the solution he finds for the world to become right again is that women stop giving birth to "sinners" as he puts it, it's kind of a drastic measure but at the time that's what he means by telling Ophelia to go to a nunnery. But really I don't think Ophelia being pregnant is even a possibility here, it might be an intrepretation but I don't think it is even implied in the text much less in this scene here.
@tompalmer59869 жыл бұрын
"We know what we are, but know not what we may be" - that is a small indication. And what about the little dittie - "He let in a maid that out a maid never departed more." Another indication. Also, it would give impetus to Ophelia's suicide if she was pregnant. They didn't have birth control back then, so if Hamlet had sex with her it was very likely she was pregnant. Hamlet's comment - "Conception is a blessing, but not as your daughter might conceive. Look to it ... " There are other indications too.
@LadyGlenmore867 жыл бұрын
There's also the fact that when she is mad she mentions Rue which is called herb of grace and was used to induce abortion.

@Fairy206 "Bless him for trying", how cleverly un-subtle you are with your elitism. Gibson's Hamlet was the best put to film, and I am not saying this as a fan of Gibson. Hamlet was young and brash, yet more wise and honest than all the knowing elders around him. It is extremely hard to be convincing as the Dane who's been done endlessly. Gibson's was the only one whose stance toward the universe I truly questioned, whose treatment of Hamlet's brilliant cynicism/humor I actually believed.

HAMLET The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons Be all my sins remember'd. OPHELIA Good my lord, 90 How does your honour for this many a day? HAMLET I humbly thank you; well, well, well. OPHELIA My lord, I have remembrances of yours, That I have longed long to re-deliver; I pray you, now receive them. HAMLET No, not I; I never gave you aught. OPHELIA My honour'd lord, you know right well you did; And, with them, words of so sweet breath composed As made the things more rich: their perfume lost, Take these again; for to the noble mind 100 Rich gifts wax poor when givers prove unkind. There, my lord. HAMLET Ha, ha! are you honest? OPHELIA My lord? HAMLET Are you fair? OPHELIA What means your lordship? HAMLET That if you be honest and fair, your honesty should admit no discourse to your beauty. OPHELIA Could beauty, my lord, have better commerce than with honesty? 110 HAMLET Ay, truly; for the power of beauty will sooner transform honesty from what it is to a bawd than the force of honesty can translate beauty into his likeness: this was sometime a paradox, but now the time gives it proof. I did love you once. OPHELIA Indeed, my lord, you made me believe so. HAMLET You should not have believed me; for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it: I loved you not. OPHELIA I was the more deceived. 120 HAMLET Get thee to a nunnery: why wouldst thou be a breeder of sinners? I am myself indifferent honest; but yet I could accuse me of such things that it were better my mother had not borne me: I am very proud, revengeful, ambitious, with more offences at my beck than I have thoughts to put them in, imagination to give them shape, or time to act them in. What should such fellows as I do crawling between earth and heaven? We are arrant knaves, all; believe none of us. Go thy ways to a nunnery. Where's your father? 130 OPHELIA At home, my lord. HAMLET Let the doors be shut upon him, that he may play the fool no where but in's own house. Farewell. OPHELIA O, help him, you sweet heavens! HAMLET If thou dost marry, I'll give thee this plague for thy dowry: be thou as chaste as ice, as pure as snow, thou shalt not escape calumny. Get thee to a nunnery, go: farewell. Or, if thou wilt needs marry, marry a fool; for wise men know well enough what monsters you make of them. To a nunnery, go, and quickly too. Farewell. 140 OPHELIA O heavenly powers, restore him! HAMLET I have heard of your paintings too, well enough; God has given you one face, and you make yourselves another: you jig, you amble, and you lisp, and nick-name God's creatures, and make your wantonness your ignorance. Go to, I'll no more on't; it hath made me mad. I say, we will have no more marriages: those that are married already, all but one, shall live; the rest shall keep as they are.

he had made a bond with her and that necklace should have been her surety against the wayward and foolish advice of Polonius. Ophelia deferred to the filial invocations of her father Polonius. she and Hamlet both were so Christian in orientation, that there was no choice for either of them. this is said to be a Christian play. the fallen king, Hamlet's father, represents fallen pride and unrepentant sin. the remarried queen represents defiling of family names and taint of ancient bloodlines. the usurping brother represents the Satan and the only married person who shall not live.
