It's not that you literally can't ever run past enemies. It's just not advised if you don't know the map you're running through and you have souls to lose. It's quite doable if you're already familiar with the choke points and ledges enemies will easily kill themselves on.

Scholar is better , not as hard and unfair as everyone says it is , has better online connectivity and many items are better in it , while vanilla is only played for people who don't have access to sotfs or just like vanilla more .

You did well to run past them, you just need to trap them in the fire than at the chokepoint :). Glad to see someone saying he enjoyed DS2 more than DS1, I very much agree. And it was way better than DS3 too in my humble opinion...

I was able to bring an enemy from Earthen Peak to the Iron Keep through the elevator once. They follow you til the end of the earth.

I think this game is definitely the worst in the series, but not bad. I agree though, these runbacks make killing enemies almost mandatory everytime and makes the game far less fun. (e.g Darklurker, Smelter Demon)

Interesting that if you aggro an enemy and save-reload, the enemy location is saved so they will spawn where you left them. The DS2 engine is complete off-shoot from the rest and I'm glad I played it last. I actually tested my memory of this at Lost Bastille and the enemy loaded inside a wall, died and ragdolled inside of it lol.

"The original game doesn't have this "problem"" and "Original doesn't have ganks" is just a lie. Vanilla Shrine of Amana and Dragon's Shrine were insufferable. SotfS added 3 samurais only on the way to Smelter (which is tedious but ain't worse than being bombarded by mages on stairs of the Shrine)
