I grew up in Canada and I struggle to understand what she says. Actually, some British dialects are too hard to understand. When I was watching Game of Thrones I always needed subtitles on to understand what they said...when it comes to American movies it is SOOOO easy to understand all the words.

Thank you very much for the video. It was helpful but for some reason I still can't do the traditional th sound; I am Nigerian and we are so used to saying the th sound like the Irish t and d. It was also easy for me to imitate you when you did the cockney f and v but I just can't get my tongue to say the proper th sound as it should be. Any thoughts?

English my 2nd language and I can understand your dad 100%. The cockney I have heard was almost a different language...I could hardly understand anything, and talking on the phone my understanding was absolute zero.

Although british english has various dialects and accents comparing one variant of british accent is pointless as Northerner scotmaman, a Welsh man and a brummie speak very different.

I really enjoyed this video. Your dad is very likeable and a very interesting person. I am a Canadian whose only language is English and I understood him completely and easily. I was surprised by this. I think I was confusing a Cockney accent like your dad has with Cockney rhyming slang. Thanks to you and your dad for sharing 😊.

As a French who is learning British accents, my favourite and easiest accent to understand is modern RP (the one I am trying to use when speaking). I can understand Cockney, Scottish, and some southern accents if the people don't talk too quickly. Brummie, Geordie, Scouse, I haven't study them yet so it's still difficult for me to understand. It's crazy as a small country has so many accents. We don't have that in France 😅.

Who is this video for ? The gentleman has a London accent but I would say not cockney. Although saying that my father was cockney born within the sound of Bow Bells but was evacuated in the war as a child out of London. So where was the gentleman born ?? It's not all about accent. To be Cockney the requirement was to be Born within the sound of Bow Bells in St Mary le Bow church in Cheapside East London. Apparently it is far harder to actually be Born a Cockney nowadays as most buildings in the area are not housing and there is now no maternity hospital located within the range of the Bow Bells.

London dominates everything in Britain. You will hear a Southern accent on Media ages before a northern one. This has been evened out quite for largely PC reasons, but I’ve NEVER met anyone who can’t understand a cockney. It is just roughly spoken English. For unintelligibility, try McDuff in Scotland, which is ironically on the same coast as the most perfectly enunciated English you will ever hear, in Inverness.
