Asian here watching from Hungary. Understood about 85% when he repeated his statement. Not an easy accent to grasp. I watch a lot of English from England TV shows and listen to radio dramas because once upon a time I wanted to take the IELTS. Hahaha. Never ended up taking the test but ended up loving many shows from the UK.

In most British accents, the r is treated as a vowel. Ironically, the purest spoken English is found near Inverness as speakers generally don't omit ts and rs as it happens in a lot of British accents which includes Scottish and English

I think that Scottish MP deliberately made it difficult for him to understand when given an opportunity to ask the question again more clearly in order to make a fool of him, he just said it in exactly the same hurried tone, with the same mumbo-jumbo proceeding the question that he didn’t need to include. You also have to consider that the MP being addressed was seated at the back and the sound will have been reverberated around the room in a way that’s much harder for him to hear than us anyway.

Italian Eastern Alps here. I realise that it is not the random difference in sounds that creates confusion for me. It is the whole rhythm of the sentences that sounds """wrong""" to me, that takes away my usual aural reference points. As a side note, I cannot believe the MP to be so oblivious to his own accent that, even when repeating the question, he does absolutely nothing in terms of speed, enunciation and clarity to make himself better understood.

I can very clearly understand every word that the host is saying, and I am from the United States. I could only understand about a third of the words by the MP.

Watching from Melbourne 😊 I found the Glaswegian a bit hard to understand, but mainly due to his speaking very quickly.

I would have said his Glaswegian accent is not particularly thick in this example. There are a lot of thicker ones.
