I don't disagree with this, but I also think that having a low barrier of entry in price makes people more willing to try the game out, having easy to dicern products that seems more aimed at beginners to (structure deck or the old starter deck as bad as they were), but they also need to bridge the introduction to actual play. That product that marketed itself as an introduction to the game failed on this last aspect, it can't bridge the players to actual play after teaching them how to play, while structure decks are much better at that. I hope the new blue-eyes structure deck comes to the tcg as a structure deck, because it's the perfect gateway (as much as old players like to complain about new people and returning people using dm/be decks) it has the most recognizable yugioh card, in a easy to understand deck grab and play deck, that can act as a bridge so the player can upgrade it and start playing for real, that's how I got back to the game back when the pend magician deck released, that's how a lot of people I know got into the game. That's how people I know got into other card games as well, a product, that a beginner can buy and start playing right out of the box, bonus points if it is an actual good deck like what pokemon is doing. Extra bonus points if the meta cards are not expensive and the expensive cards are actually just alternate more rare versions of cards.

GOAT format literally doesn’t require you to start first. GOAT format actually allows the second player to have the advantage due to card advantage. Going first doesnt win you the game in GOAT.

We need to roll back to the GOAT format where duels had a back and forth. And with Konami balancing out all new cards to keep it dynamic

Something I haven’t seen mentioned yet is that new players have to learn the game at its most complex ever: long, complicated card texts, unintuitive deck building, long combos, and oppressive end boards. A new player who’s just read the rule book has no context for what a game of modern Yugioh will look like, or how many cards they will have to memorize in very short order to keep up with what their opponents are doing. There’s nothing to tell them that 90% of the cards released are so far from competitively playable that reading them is all but a waste of time. Say a new player got gifted an old gadget deck from a friend - they have no way of playing those cards in the modern game because they’re balanced for an older version of the game that no longer exists. Often, the prospect of spending hundreds of dollars on a deck you might not even like to play a game that plays and feels much different than it did 10 or 15 years ago isn’t fun. As a returning player myself, the gameplay loop I remember from 2010-2014 is hardly reflected in the modern game. We need more official resources for legacy formats that can guide new and returning players through the increasingly complex elements of the game, and a place for people to play older formats with a very different feel and gameplay loop. This exists informally at some card shops, but you sure won’t find it on Master Duel.

To many people playing the same deck because its a easy win for them i like playing creative players where i ask questions on the card and what they do and find ways to get at them next game but if im sitting there saying your moves while you make them it gets boring

As someone who grew up on Yu-Gi-Oh watching the ceiling rise while I just use simple decks because that's where the fun is for me. But the current state of the game is min max hell and just straight up hyper competitive decks for no reason. If you want a game that is more about fun winning is a bonus Just play MTG or hearthstone. That is how I feel these days. I also just play kozmos and skull servants anyways lmao.

No one has fun at the start seems like we found the root cause of why the game is dying. Thats just ...not good game design period.

What's even more sad is Yu-Gi-Oh will be stuck as a cardgame. Video game -> Cardgame. Anime -> Cardgame. While other franchise like One Piece, Pokemon, Digimon, Dragon Ball, etc. has expand their franchise to more than singular purpose.

I quit the game for a few reasons 1 I do not like the whole turn 1 break my board gameplay 2 The combo lines are far too complicated for me to learn, even if I play a non combo deck I am forced to learn how other decks combo and what there lines are and there are far too many for me to memorize and actually understand what they're doing. 3 The decks I like to play stand no chance against the new decks people play so yugioh punishes you for not playing straight up meta It really is those three reasons I quit and I'll never play modern yu-gi-oh again. If I were to play yugioh it would either be just Goat and/or Edison but I have no interest in modern yugioh.

Had a friend try yugioh on MD and he was patient enough to give it a whole month an when he had questions I answered them an when he finally felt he could understand what was happening an how to play, his take away from it all was that the knowledge portion of what you need to know is too damn high an complex just for majority of your duels to be over in a turn or two and i cant blame him at the rate ygo is going if existing players dont rope new players in then how else is someone supposed to learn this complex ass game an stick with it?

I've played yugioh since it came out, walking to Walgreens with a few dollars to get a new pack to make a beat down deck. Yugioh is terrible. Every deck does the exact same thing (search, negate, protection) it doesn't matter what you play the end game is always the same. The power creep is so insane the match is decided on how well the first turn goes. The whole point of the game is to not let your opponent play. I never realized the flaws until I learned magic a few months ago. Much better game, the only flaw is that there is no msrp on products

I think as a new player the fun you're having in the game is linked to learning and understanding what's happening win or lose. Most of the time in Yu-Gi-Oh those players are going to be lost. Yea somebody could put a 100 hours in and learn how to play this game, but you also put same 100 hours into others that are more fun right out of thr gate lol.

I love Yu-Gi-Oh. I quit off and on it's the tcg I favor most. My biggest gripe is how they construct the META with the intention of making making new archetypes more and more busted. Honestly, there should be separate ranked modes that cater to specific summoning methods and only allow monsters that benefit that summoning method. Then, just rotate that more than official ranked to keep it fresh.. I had a friend recently get into the game, which is great. But the problem of that was how difficult it was to find him something to his niche.

I think there is a huge difference between a new player being someone that knows the basics and wants to give the game a real try, and a new player that doesn't know anything about the game

I got into yugioh because of the memes. I heard the game is horrible to play because you have to spend more time reading card text than actually playing and people will spend 10 minutes on a single turn when it's only turn 2 and then OTK after playing 30 cards. I thought there is no way this game is this much of a meme, then I found out it was actually true and now I can't stop playing just because I enjoy how hilariously bad it actually is.

Honestly since characters do it so much in the anime... Just... Straight up F it and just make face up defense position a thing. It's not going to hurt anything or anybody... If anything it might just make defense position worse.

To me as someone who played during Duel Monsters era, that was the best time to be a yugioh player. Its sounds like a boomer thing to say, but the game had some complexity yet it was still relatively simple to get into and cheap as well. Most monster effects were short and to the point, same with spells and traps. Normal summoning, tribute summoning, ritual summoning, and fusion summoning and some special summoning were all you needed to know.

New player? Go play the first story of legacy of duelist. Then give them an exodia ftk deck to practice. Then build a stun anti-special summon deck

Also, what is worse, there hasn't been a starter deck since 2019 or a Structure since 2023, so for new players, it's easier to learn the game if they are willing to shell out a lot of money to make a half-decent deck. Rebooting the card game with Rush has put their core game behind the gates so that new players can at least have fun.

I now collect and play Lorcana and Pokemon cards because those games don’t make me need to get to get out of their online sources to understand its core mechanics. I feel Yugioh has become a game where fun is no longer a priority while being a game that would scare off anyone who never played it. When Links came out, it was the era that, to me, hurt the game the most. I played for over a decade when Synchro was a hot thing. Now I feel like a new player because of the amount of bloat in card effects and all the constantly added archetypes.

Honestly after Links i knew this issue will happen.

Ok this is late. My suggestion is this since tryhards do not want to limit special summoning or pay costs to summon monsters: Print Uncounterable RAIGEKI, DarkHole, or Evenly Matched Type Cards. Or allow/ create trap cards that can be played from Hand. Make the Combo players pace their turns. Now we will see who gets last laugh.

I think the strategy you took is the best, as the easiest way to learn/get into yugioh is to learn one single deck well. I actually got into yugioh through master duel (I understood how synchros, xyz, fusions, and half how links work beforehand which certainly helped) when the labrynth secret pack had just come out (missed tear meta rip) and just blindly spent all my beginner gems on the lab secret pack since it had the most points overall back when md still had those. I slapped together all the random labrynth cards and whatever else I could shove in and started playing. I actually think md now has a decent system for new players with the introduction of the swordsoul starter newbies can get and play until they learn how yugioh works, but there is obviously still the issue of the 'tutorial' being unrepresentative of what yugioh actually is.
