I was in the Air Cadets in NZ. Unfortunately it was a hot bed for pedofile and Adult Male Bullies who got their rocks off from yelling at kids. The squadron I was in, the CO was sacked for stealing funds and a regular force Air Force adult air-craftsman that used to attend to attend to assist, turned out to be a Pedo and was thrown into military prison for tying up a bunch of cadets (near naked) and then hosing them down with a fire hose. The same bloke tried and failed to groom me. (My mates and I already knew about people like that at the age of 13) I remember being a 14yr old cadet being absolutely yelled at and abused by a regular force Warrant Officer in his 50s who was using the most obscene language and this was a common behaviour from cadet and regular force NCO's and Officers. I also remember a big male Maori NCO threatening to beat me up for a minor infringement. You can imagine how terrifying this would be for a small 14year old boy being threatened by a large 18 year old male. There were some kind and decent leaders as well but generally it was a dodgy environment. The experience taught me to devote a large part of my free time to learning martial arts and standing up for myself and not taking any shit from anyone Im in my 50s now so I take comfort in the knowledge that most of those pricks are either dead now or harmless pensioners. It was actually a contributing factor to quite a traumatic youth and I hope things have changed since for the better. One thing I do know, is that if I had a young Son, I would take a very close look at what kind of organisations he was allowed to join, including schools, cadet force, clubs etc.. Pedofiles and Bullies gravitate to organisations where there are a lot of kids. I can definitely say that being in the cadet force did me more harm than good. Parents be ware.

Unfortunately, I've experienced some of those things in my cadet career too. The caliber of leadership and discipline, degree of morality and decency, and the values of respect and concern for others always travels from the highest ranking officers downwards to the most junior cadet ranks. It's not your fault you had crappy leaders above you. I'm very sorry to hear of it. I hope life turned out well for you, my friend. 👍🏽

Was in Black Down back in 2010. What a sh*tty summer. A lot of toxic leadership and abuse of power. Screaming at kids for no valid reason just to instill "discipline".

I never understood why they changed the wheel command to be given by the drum major’s hand instead of the old way actually using the Mace. I believe all commands should be given by the use of the Mace and nothing else because otherwise what is the point of having a Mace? 🤔
@BrendanKeogh-o2q11 ай бұрын
Who decided on this new obscure style of drum majoring? It looks so unprofessional and strange. From my past experience I was trained to give my signals prior to down beats to cue the band for my desired action and not on the down beat without any warning 🤔🤔🤔

As a former Air Cadet (2004-2009) Toronto Falcon squadron 818, it was exhilarating getting a pilot's license before getting a driver's license. Few people will relate to this type of experience.

@@dustymiller65 Ack, thanks. I also remember that 818 was amalgamated from 3 other squadrons, I just don't remember what their numbers were. And we did not always parade in Moss Park Armoury either.

@@ildart8738 WOWWW! I'd completely forgotten about the triple Squadron amalgamation thing--that's a blast from the past indeed! I definitely wasn't around in 1972 when the Squadron was brand spanking new, but as a recruit (Dec '78) I do remember waiting an eternity to finally get the new (ugly) Tri-Forces dark green uniform whilst all the older cadets had the smart looking Air Force Blue one with the waist tapered jacket. And of course, a handful of years after I left, Air Cadets reverted back to the glorious Air Force Blues--I envy you!! 👍🏽
