Buffy also has literally nothing to forgive or not forgive herself for. At this point she doesn't understand that she's acting like a monster, she hasn't killed anyone, she only finds out about Katrina at the end of the series. At this point the only beings who are really hurt by her relationship with Spike are them and Spike. Maybe a little more Dawn, but Dawn's problems go deeper than just not having an older sister.

There is a strong desire to compare these two series, but again, learn to understand what Buffy means, not what she actually says. Or even more importantly, what Buffy does NOT actually say in the scene with Tara. She does not say that she does not love Spike, she assumes the second option, where she seems to be using him, and accepts this option as the truth, because the first option is more terrible for her. There are indeed certain risks there, starting with the fact that Spike is still a soulless vampire, and having a relationship with him is at least dangerous. She believed that she killed Katrina not because she and Spike were lovers, it was an accident in any case, she did not stick a stake in her, she did not even see her until the last moment. But Buffy is not capable of introspection at this stage, she needs someone neutral for this, and Tara becomes that someone. Also, Buffy admits in a scene with Tara that the only time she really feels anything is when she's with Spike. This raises a few questions. Like, what exactly is she feeling? And what did she feel when she met Angel after her resurrection? Nothing? Because if not, then she's lying to Tara, and this scene doesn't feel like a lie.
@ThePowerDrome20 күн бұрын
Not really. You would never let someone you think is inferior to you in anything comfort you. It's the same as letting a cockroach comfort you. The only difference is that a cockroach can't talk. You would never share anything with someone you think is inferior to you, if that's actually true for you, not just loud words. Now, about the truth. Buffy is lying. She doesn't think Spike is inferior to her, really. In fact, on her personal list of favorites, Spike is higher than Riley. Even though she's supposedly in a relationship with Riley and he has access to her body, she doesn't share with him what really worries her. Instead, she then, out of the blue, after Glory's visit, takes the two most important people in her life to Spike, trusting them to him just like that, not even for a fee, motivating it by the fact that he's the only one who can protect them, although that's not really the motivation. Earlier in the same episode, she says that she doesn't need Spike and will never ask for his help. Another lie, another one. Even if we imagine that Buffy is in an altered state of consciousness after Glory's visit, she nevertheless decides that Spike, who previously, in her opinion and the opinion of many other viewers, did not deserve even an ounce of trust, is actually more trustworthy under the circumstances. But I'm not surprised that you didn't get that. The show actually does a very poor job of exploring Buffy herself.

Loved your analysis. One thing you didn’t focus on which is my fav moment of the whole episode which I would like to add. The moment when he gives up his “front” as spike - we see william come out - and we see it twice in this episode. First, when she throws him to the floor in the alley and tells he he’s beneath her. And he becomes genuinely hurt/emotional. And he reacts by pushing william back behind his spike persona with anger. He then rides his fury all the way to her with his gun… then her emotion/humanity breaks spike right back down to william. In an instant his fury vanishes. He can’t help but show kindness and compassion. It’s so beautiful to see. It’s not the slayer that breaks through to william, it’s Buffy.

I always thought after I remember you when Angel wish back the day he created alternate reality. If his prophecy is true. The vampire with a soul would play apart in apocalypse. Well the Mora demon though just a filler character wasn't only strong,but he continuously would have regenerated only to get stronger. But he also refers to the apocalypse as the "End of days." No other big bad said that.( That I recall anyway) Plus how many apocalypse's could there be. (Wolfman and Hart said they never had a end of the world event planned were it was actually gonna happen.) Angel kills the Mora demon instantly and a new beginning basically occurs. Both Buffy and Angel both seemed to become so jaded as the seasons went on from that point. Maybe I am wrong but the end of days was the closest thing to religious reference to the end. After that Dawn came,Spike got a soul, Cordelia got visions,Darla came back,Konnor was born,among other things that all seemed to make their reality completely different compared to the first 3 and half seasons.

Angel is far from boring. Unlike other shows. The hero can't have a happy ending. I remember you is the most heart breaking moment ever. Also he wished the day back after being restored to human. He fought the trails like Spike. I love Spike to but he was selfish. It was a emotional high getting a soul like a game. He could care less about the world. Angel gave up redemption because he didn't want Buffy dying in vain. And giving up for the world makes him selfish according Spuffy fans. No it's the complete opposite. Great analysis. I wish we got the happy ending for him and Buffy. But its called a "curse" for a reason. What's worse is realizing no matter what happens his prophecy was a lie. But he still choose to fight for good when he could easily have went dark.

Ironically, even though he gave up being human for Buffy (we can't be together if it would cost you your life or the lives of others) she still dies a year later. I also think the world might benefit from perrmanently getting rid of the looming threat of Angelus. I think Angel ultimately likes fighting the good fight and being the hero (there is a bit of narcissism there) over being just Buffy's boyfriend (he would basically become Riley or sth.) I like him a lot as a character, he's very complex, goofy and is a genuinely good guy.

Angel is a great character and loved the show. Too many comparisons between him and spike. I’m a Spike fan over Angel because even without a soul he still fought for good even though it was for selfish reasons. Angel only did good because of a curse. It’s not really choice
@johncap6495 Жыл бұрын
It is though because he easily could have chosen to do bad. Angel with a soul and Spike with a soul admitted they still were capable of evil. Spike was good kill Principal Wood and Angel allowed Darla and Drusilla to kill the lawyers. I love both characters too but I still like Angel more. His entire arch is a struggle with a doomed outcome no matter which way he goes. And in him wishing back the day in I will remember you was the biggest act of unselfishness any by could have ever done.

My take was that Angel was sent to learn from Buffy, so he could learn how to become that fighting hero who helps people. Graduation Day was his graduation as well. I see Angel as being given his potential by the curse rather than being a "chosen" one like a slayer as there has to be a chosen one with slayers. So the Powers That Be must have finally recognized the wasted potential in Angel, which is why they then sent him to watch the slayer to learn how to become something better.

I've also noticed another side to this episode that adds to that. Going all the way back to Angel's episode in season one, Buffy learns that a slayer isn't just a simple warrior that kills demons, but is in fact a judge over the entire demon realm on Earth. Her life as the slayer is then made infinitely more complicated by this, because she is then only allowed to kill once she's judged the demon worthy of death. On the flip side, Lie To Me and subsequent season 2 episodes show that when one is judge worthy of death, she is obligated to kill them. Miss Calendar paid for her avoiding that aspect of her duties. At the end of season two, Buffy's making the very difficult choise to sacrifice, in her eyes kill, Angel to save the world, it nearly broke her. Then, in this episode, still raw from losing him by her own hand, she's suddenly confronted by the most terrible reality. She has to judge Angel worthy of death again. So many people are confused as to why Buffy doesn't tell anyone Angel is back. Part of it is she doesn't want to hurt them or have them bet angry. Foremost though is, Buffy as the slayer, is the judge of whether he lives or dies. She knows each of them would have their opinions and may even try to take justice into their own hands. As the slayer though, the responsibility is hers. Also, with the state Angel is in, she is crushed by the very good likelihood of her having to judge him as being worthy of death. In that very likley event, Buffy knew in no uncertain terms that she would have to kill him again. As she hadn't even had the strength to tell those closest to her that Angel was restored before she killed him, there was no way she could have told them he was back and she was most likley going to have to kill him again. In this episode, she likely shows more fear than in most other episodes, and yet almost none of it is fear of Angel hurting her. It's all fear of herself, a bone deep dread that those putting those impossible decisions in front of her were going to force her to make another one. This is especially in the case of when she sees he has broken out. She gave herself a reprieve from making a judgment by chaining him up. He hadn't hurt a human yet, and she couldn't prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that he had. She was delaying things. His breaking out was forcing her hand. You can see the look on her face as she's realizing she won't be able to let him leave that room alive. Every sign up to that point had showed he was feral and she was juding him worthy of death. She even backs off, not out of fear of attack, but as a last desparate measure of delaying her killing him. Then he changes put of demon forms, falls to her knees, and says her name. That tear running down her face is her relief at having the impossible choice removed from her as she was given the evidence she so desparate sought to change her judgment of him so she could spare his life. So she could spare herself a choice that likely would have broken her forever.

This is really really insightful! And I 100% agree. It's also consistent with what Buffy tells Willow and Xander in "Selfless" when she's deciding whether or not to kill Anya. (Interesting that it's Angel that's thrown back into Buffy's face, yet again) Buffy's friends truly never understand the role and function of the Slayer. Buffy's incredibly patient with them!
@haddow777 Жыл бұрын
@@becomingbuffypodcast yes, I love that episode. Although, by that time Willow has a much better understanding of Buffy's role. That's why she avoided telling Buffy about what Anya did for as long as possible, because she knew Biffy would have been compelled to kill Anya. The show built in so many similar details from this time into Anya's story. From the moment Buffy learns Anya has become a demon again, she avoids being around her as much as possible. At that moment, Anya is under Buffy's constant judgement again and Buffy tries to keep ignorant as much as possible of Anya's actions as she can because she similarly dreads having to kill her. I love the fight scene between them. Anya has known the whole time Buffy's position, although her avoiding killing, I think, is because she's genuinely changed. Still, once she's killed, she knew Buffy would be coming for her. In fact, I would go so far as saying that her killing was her giving up, a kind of suicide by slayer. Still, during the fight, Buffy stopped held back as much as possible, resisting in the same way she did in this episode with Angel. She easily could have killed Anya after she impaled her and Anya was unconscious, but she held back, delaying, hoping somehow she wouldn't have to do it. Then, at the first sign that there was even a hope she wouldn't have to kill her, Butfy stopped attacking completely. As soon as Anya was given a choice, Buffy stood back and waited. As soon as Anya was reversed the deaths and reentered the human realm, Buffy was so relieved to free from the burden of having to judge her still. An even crazier character with respects to Buffy's role as judge of demons though, and my favorite, is Tara. For mez that is the best one, because it shows how Tara loved Willow so much more than we initially thought. She grew up thinking she was a demon. Not only a demon, but one that was destined to consume her and turn her evil at some point in her life. Also, by the time she met Willow, she knew her change was coming soon. So, when Tara learned soon after that Willow's best friend was a super being whose duty was to slay evil demons, she would have known that staying near Buffy would mean she would die when she changed. Yet, Tara never left Wiĺlow nor tried to separate her from Buffy. She chose to stay with Willow and keep Willow close to Buffy, likely hoping that when the time came, Buffy would protect Willow from her demon side. She was willing to sacrifice her life to be close with Willow right up to the end. I think about that brief time between when Tara's demon half is exposed to the group to when Spike proves she's only a human, the dread going through Buffy's mind. In those moments, she had to face the reality of judging Tara. Of the potentiality of having to kill Tara. Likely, those moments were amongst the worst in Buffy's life. Just imagine her having to seriously think over the idea of having to kill the woman Willow loves most in the world. Some people complain that they would have preferred Tara had been a half demon, but they show never could have done it. As the slayer, Buffy would have constantly been judging Tara and it would have killed her, and likley her relationship with Willow.

@@becomingbuffypodcast Selfless is a great episode into the psychology of Buffy as the Slayer and her role as the one who swings the axe on evil. And I love how it's reiterated by Wesley in the Angel Seaon 4 episode Salvage when he tell Faith "I know. That's why it had to be you." Wesley is well aware that while Faith may be a Slayer, Buffy is THE Slayer, and when it comes down to it, she'll tear out own heart and put Angelus down once and for all. Because that's what it means to be the Slayer. It's a such a subtle line but speaks volumes of Buffy's role in the mythology of the show.
