Time. Even though Angel has not yet emerged from his hell dimension, the gears are in motion, and the countdown has already started, until his inevitable move away from Buffy and to his own show.
Since season 1, it is time’s shadow that has loomed large over Buffy and Angel’s relationship, represented by Angel’s hesitancy due to his immortality. Season 3 repeatedly leans into the theme that Angel will never be able to give Buffy a normal life, not only because he cannot die, but because Buffy will. Ultimately, Angel leaves town in “Graduation Day,” knowing that time is precious and thinking that Buffy will waste her life with him.
In the ultimate Bangel episode, “I Will Remember You,” time is prominently featured and shown yet again to be the thing standing between them. Buffy tries to tell both herself and Angel that with enough time, they should be able to forget about each other, a theme that is shown through Angel’s broken clock.
And yet, they don’t.
Repeatedly, Buffy’s and Angel’s love is shown to transcend time. A forever love. While Ricky grows old, and eventually forgets Lily’s name, Angel uses his love for Buffy to claw his way out of hell, remembering nothing but her name. And a few years later, in an episode fittingly entitled, “Forever,” Angel comforts a grief-stricken Buffy, offering to stay as long as she needs him. Buffy’s response mirrors her dream on the beach, as she asks him to stay for forever; a sentiment that shows her far from forgetting.
Finally, in “Chosen,” as Buffy talks of cookie dough baking while Angel silently reminisces on the day only he remembers, we are once again reminded of time. But this moment is different. Angel’s response that he isn’t getting any older shows that the very immortality he feared back in S3, is now a gift. For once, time is on their side. Buffy isn’t ready yet, but her admission that she still does think of a future with the two of them, shows the enduring nature of their love. She hasn’t forgotten.
