That Melbourne concert is so sad. There was a documentary from the fan's perspective about it. Sydney, Judy slayed it. However, because of everything that went down behind the scenes with her medication and Garland being ill, she still was FORCED to do it. Judy showed about an hour late and the jeering audience happened within the first 5 songs. Breaks my heart for Judy what the industry did to her. FUN FACT: Lorna and Joey were actually NOT in Australia in real life during that tour. The director thought of it being based on Lorna's book as she is narrating the story.

What people who say that she doesn’t sound like Judy are forgetting I think and I wasn’t even born and I know this, is that she was one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons to ever achieve mainstream success out of the theater. Annie was apparently everywhere in the 70s and early 80s. This would’ve gotten a whole generation interested in Judy Garland. I wish that they had done a soundtrack album and I wish that the album was available digitally on like Apple Music and Spotify. I saw this movie for the first time here, on KZbin like 10 years ago when the whole thing was posted. such a great movie and she’s so talented.

I feel for Both Brittney and Joanna on this. Producers did say their side in a kindel book. both sides made mistakes the agents and the managers in handling the situation and not wanting Joanna's feelings hurt. You got a play people put money into. the producers tried some ways of trying to keep things quiet and not hurt feelings which in some ways was bit sneaky. It is common to have orphan or two be understudies. Then Joanna got sick and did not know Brittney became the understudy too. Alexander did go on once. By the time Joanna was to join them again they were trying to work out a deal to share the role . Joanna's manger were faxing demands in they were not prepared to deal with. Both sides accused each other of going to the press.; what happened was a mother or stage hand innocently told the press who was hanging at the stage door oh Joanna's not here to day cause they did not know what was going on in the office. Both girls were working into the role when they did it . Martin and Daddy worked with Joanna at the producers request on connecting with Daddy more. She was slowly getting there. By the time Joanna's agent had a lawyer contact them by fax and the producers decided to let Joanna go . they still paid her to end of her contract. Yes both sides made mistakes and with timing and money being of essence they did not see time to have the girls work into the role. Though Brittney did and given have the chance Joanna would have too. I'm sure Brittney had pains from it too . People act like she should not be counted as an Annie too. Brittney is not invite to Annie things and such. I can imagine Brittney being hurt too. That is just as cruel as Joanna's situation. Both girls should be included and people need to let it pass .Stirring the pot is cruel to both girls.

Somehow weave Me The Sunshine popped into my head today. I seem to remember a group of sisters use to sing it @ church when was a young lad back in the 70's. I think they were the priests assistants daughters. His name was Des Andrews. And the church was St Margaret Mary's in Woodbridge Ont Canada. They'd songs like this along with traditional hymns. And always made the service a little fun.

This is my opinion after watching this many times… I don’t think the problem was Joanna. The problem was Nell Carter. She got panned by the critics for her portrayal of Miss Hannigan, and also accused the producers of racism when commercials for Annie did not show her but another actress (not sure when Nell Carter joined the tour before reaching Broadway). But, there was a problem… Nell Carter was the headliner of the show, not Joanna. The producers or whoever made the final decision to fire Joanna used her as a scapegoat to their problems with other cast members. And lo and behold, a window of opportunity… Joanna got sick when the tour arrived in Boston. Convenient! She’s the one who needs to be replaced and - VOILA! - problem solved. Only it didn’t solve anything, and the show was doomed from the get go. Would it have been different if someone else had played Hannigan? Who knows. But again… only my opinion.

But she came back and upstaged the Beatles at a charity show, and later did a legendary concert with Liza at ths Palladium.

There was nothing wrong with the Judy Garland show…they needed to get rid of Jerry vandyke sooner he wasn’t funny, the sketches weren’t funny, they should just let her do her concerts with guest. That’s all she needed to do , and touching people. I don’t know when that became a problem and I’ve seen all the shows and the outtakes. I may not be old enough to remember the original shows but I’ve seen them and I own them and I thought she a superior job. Her show was no different than any other, Carol Burnett or anyone else’s that followed after hers. The only thing is Carol Burnett had better writers. They should have just let Judy be Judy, and stop putting her up against Bonanza because back then there was one TV per household, and it was dominated by the man of the house where he got to watch what he wanted to watch, and the woman was forced to watch what he wanted to watch unless he was at work and she got to watch her soaps during the day, Judy should have taken her show and went to a different network, she had ill advisors

Shirley had incredible roles in Heidi and The Little Princess around that time. If she was Dorothy she would’ve been just as good except her Rainbow song would be a child-like sound but I think if practiced enough would’ve pulled it off nicely. The Oz movie was so well made though. Fox gave Shirley lead role in a copycat movie The Bluebird and she did well but the movie was a dud. Just like Shirley’s successful films, writing and directing are everything.

I didn't get that at all, though I admit I'm no expert. From what little I've been able to see from both of them in the role, neither one really suit it. Brittany appears to be a better actress. I could see how Joanna's acting would be grating on the other cast mates, and wrong for the character. She's a little too old for the role, though Brittany is too young and doesn't have the right look at all.

Lila Crawford was 12 , Andrea was 14 when she retired from Annie. Joanna was small for 12 and she could have carried that show a long while. We'll prob never know the reason but having seen video of her in the north Carolina performance, she was a great little actress. The producers prob got scared that she was prone to bronchitis or something. They did offer for the girls to share the role which is just strange. She was good enough to share it.. But not good enough to keep it by herself? Makes no sense. Listen to Joanna sing Over the rainbow on Rosie O'Donnell. She is fantastic!

@@maggiesanford8324 Yeah they were complaining about the choices but Martin pushed for Joanna because he knew she had the talent and just had to develop it.
