In 1935's "Paddy O'Day", Jane shows 1930's movie audiences that she could hold her own against Miss Temple. Usually playing a tough, plain looking, toyboyish but self reliant underdog, she was never "Curly Top", "Bright Eyes" or "Dimples"; as Shirley's films were titled, but rather "Little Miss Nobody", "Always in Trouble" and "Rascals". Jane did it a different way and quickly rose to the top 10 box office ratings in the 1930's. Her films were made by 20th Century Fox, Shirley's own studio. Sadly, Fox has not released her films on DVD and although Jane is well remembered today, her films are rarely seen. (Come on, Fox...)
An expert imitator, Jane had the uncanny ability even at nine years old to duplicate any accent and mimic any popular personality. Unlike any other child star playing a foreigner, the studio actually had Jane adopt the correct accent for this role.
