Thank you! I'm making a tutorial blog post based on this video (I referenced source in post). Gramps is quite confusing to figure out at least initially.

Too complicated.

Trouble is it feels like they load on all these features when you're starting meaning trying to do basic things gets buried in all the extra options so it's more of a learning curve. It could do with a simple mode really.

I love your videos for your calm voice, you not talking about not related things but just exactly what the video is all about and you nicely structuring things. It's professional video tutorial. Thank you.

I have watched the first six minutes of this video and can only say your approach is bizarre and completely unhelpful to the average user. I have a GEDCOM I made using Ancestris and now am considering editing it further with GRAMPS. Do you say how to manipulate a family tree in the basic ways, adding people etc? No. You first tell us something about a gramplet for age statistics. Who on earth uses that? Maybe a few academic human geographers certainly not genealogists. Then you go on to classify three people as 'mariners'. Again, not something most people will be interested in doing and certainly not in the way you do it. What you should do is open a chart and show how to add people, events, dates etc. That is the basics and what people want to know. Or else you should show people how to make a chart from scratch. But messing around showing ersatz features of the program is not an overview for beginners!

How do I include the birth and death places on a pedigree report (Chart)
@steveb.9193

I would really like to include the birthplaces and deathplaces on my printed family tree. I know it would make a larger graph but I have access to plotter. Also, my family tree goes back 19 generations (to the early 1400's) but it looks like Gramps will only allow 15 generations in a printed report. Any help would appreciated; if Gramps won't allow this do you know of a different program that might??? Thanks, I really appreciate your videos and help.

I'm stuck - can't get back into my tree that I spent all day doing - When I click to open the tree I get a message stating i need to force unlock ??? I'm not an IT expert and cannot find any useful info on how to do this - Also when it's eventually solved, how do I stop this ridiculous thing from happening again anyway - I don't need the program to lock itself ever

Do we have to begin with repository and all that ? I've not used Gramps before and at the moment just need to know how to begin a tree - how to start adding people ??

Dear Richard, just a note of thanks for posting this. I like your methodology and starting with repositories, sources and citations and structuring places properly. If you just jump in and create people you end up with a mess so seeing the structure properly helps tremendously. I also like your method of a mini website on your mobile device. Great idea. Again, thanks for the effort, it is really appreciated.

How do you correct mistakes? For example you've discovered your line is following an uncle (brother of your true line). What's a good way to make your changes? Thanks.

This tutorial is meant for people who have already done some work in this field. I wish someone could just give us a completely beginner focused tutorial using this program. Adding yourself and a sibling for starters.

Thank you Richard for making this video. Well done! I noticed that when you were adding People, you kept placing the surname in the Prefix field. Will such a practice ever create issues later on?

Richard, I was just enjoying your GRAMPS videos, when I was surprised to see your mention of a certain town and certain surname. I am researching a combination of the two! I cannot see how to send you a Private Message though. Can you PM me?

11:28 Why do you use Residence events instead of Census events?

1:13 Gramps has a *Copy* tree feature under "Manage Family Trees". Click that and your tree is automatically copied into a newly-created tree.

Very helpful. I hope the other videos go deeper into Citations. But, 18:11 is misleading enough to be outright wrong. Right under "Export..." is "Make Backup...". In fact, "Make Backup..." is just "Export... the whole tree to gramps' XML format" .

So far on this method with a new 4.1.3 on Windows I have found when generating a narrated website, it is looking for the title to sort the the places.htm page and so is not listed alphabetically.

I'm using 4.1.3 and can't get it to auto fill locations like you show on video. Is there an option that turns that feature on? Great Video, Starting over using what you showed.

Robert Pettit Thank you for your kind comments. I'm afraid the auto fill feature was removed after 4.1.1. Have a look at this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJC2p5SsZdmJZ9k I've just posted - it may help.

Richard, I would like to thank you for these videos on getting started with Gramps, I have wanted to switch over for a while and have never really understood all the 'components', these guides are worth watching! I tried importing my gedcom from FTM3, but the learning curve on setting it up (ie. converting) is too steep, so I am biting the bullet and starting from scratch! I was daunted, but I am now looking forward to it, thank you!

How do you differentiate between birth name and married name for an individual?
@richardsuthern6672
@richardsuthern6672 9 жыл бұрын
Stacy M Hi: Personally I don't. I use the birth name throughout. For me it it enough to have the marriage event recorded and create a relationship in Gramps. It is possible to add alternate names to a person, so if you wanted to record the married name you could add it there. You'll find that on the individual's name tab. Under "Type" there is an option for married name. HINT: when you type in a surname in the relevant box, don't forget to hit "enter" after entering the data otherwise the name might not be recorded!
