I call it “Zero Tolerance” and I am annoyed at the space if something isn’t exactly as it should be. Then it’s me warring against the stuff and the disarray. When it’s right, then I’ve won!

To me, minimal doesn't mean joyless. There will still be items we buy just to enjoy. Your spice jars are something you enjoy, and they also serve a purpose for you by keeping a finite amount of spices contained in the space you have. I'd call that a win, practical joy!

I used to call my counter or coffee table or any other flat space that was piled with stuff, my "I Spy Counter," after the I Spy books. It was worth a chuckle or two, but I am now trying to put items away more often (5 min./day) and now my adult son has noticed that the improvement! Thank you!

I was diagnosed with autism just a little over a year ago, at 29. I'll be honest - sometimes I still have this magical thinking thing where I see inanimate objects as having feelings. I factually understand that they literally can't and don't - but that feeling is still there lol. I have a few trinket boxes and now I feel inspired to go back through and maybe part with a few things. Other times, when it's difficult to part with something insignificant that I still have a weird attachment to, I create a little story in my mind: "this item is ready to move on to the donation center" or "this thing is happy to be in the trash can." I know it sounds silly...because it is...but hey, it works for me 😂

I’ve listened to this a few times and every time I narrow my wardrobe a bit more. I’m open to trying the challenge soon, I’m postpartum so I hesitate. I got rid of a lot of clothes that I don’t particularly like and don’t fit me. I like that it’s a three month capsule. That could be exciting to rotate each season. A few tips I’ve learned from you guys and Cass is: - Don’t let clothes bully you. - Own clothes that fit your today body. - If you didn’t own it, would you buy it again? - If you can easily replace it and it’s extra, don’t worry about removing it. You’ll be fine. - Make your “uniform” to wear everyday for easy decision making. Ex: Mine is a V neck tee, jeans, a belt, and my favorite loafers or tennies.

I found a weird symptom in my decluttering. I had a few items that I kept and even displayed that brought back painful memories looking at them. Why was it hard to let them go? I found it was because my brain still needed to figure out what had happened, so I could keep it from happening again in the future. Since I hadn’t figured out what went wrong, I couldn’t let go of the items. It was like a defense mechanism. I finally got rid of the items while I prayed over the past painful events and I prayed for the people who hurt me, forgiving them and forgiving myself. So hard but so good.❤

This glimpse into Dana’s method does NOT do her book or total method justice. (Of course how could it being only 36 minutes long). Read her Decluttering At The Speed of Life. It’s so impactful!! And do the body doubling technique that Dawn has been mentioning (whether through their course) or just using their videos. So effective!
@wilhelmina88439 күн бұрын
I LOVE Dana’s Decluttering At The Speed of Life! ❤️ It was the single most impactful book I read. Cannot stress enough: GAME CHANGER. I’ve listened to her audiobook dozens of times to solidify the techniques, to use as encouragement and as body doubling. I’ve gotten so much inspiration from Dawn and Cass (love them!) and other books and other minimalists. BUT nothing has gotten me moving and progressing like Dana’s three books. If you always have a dirty dishes in a messy kitchen and/or often don’t have clean clothes, start with her How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind. She gets these things solved and makes a real dent in decluttering. If you’re dishes are usually clean and your wash is done regularly on time and you don’t have things on the floor BUT cabinets are stuffed and you have a basement full of stuff- use the Decluttering at the Speed of Life.

I think someone of Myquillyn's heritage came from Co. Donegal in Ireland. I believe there's a village there called 'Moycullen,' pronounced in Donegal Irish as 'Myquillen'. I remember my parents mentioning it after a trip there years ago. I love her cosy but minimal style. That's me too! Listening a second time round. Thank you Dawn. G Ire

Hi Dawn, loved this podcast. When we moved almost 2 years ago. We left some furniture for the new owners. A family member said she couldn't believe I was leaving those things.I said they are not going to fit in our new house. I had bought all of that furniture it was not given to us. I think when we aee given things, they are gifts and we really should be able to get rid of things if we choose.I don't think people should say anything once someone gives you something it is now yours to do with what you want.When people say don't get rid of it just say do you want it? Thanks again Kelly

Hi Dawn, loved this podcast.We have a smaller home now that we have retired.I split my cleaning up and do a few things each day.When we had a bigger home I couldn't get things done.I thought I was lazy but I really just think it was just overwhelming. A few things on the to do list is good. Somedays if I don't feel like doing anything, I don't worry and I don't beat myself up about it. We as women just think we have to get it all done in a day. It is OK to have a few dust bunnies. Thanks for the videoes.Kelly.

@conniesaunders1712 күн бұрын
I didn’t read the comments but, the way you brought them up, they didn’t sound bad. I come across as rude when I write compared to speaking. I’m guessing because you’re always so kind that even mean things don’t sound mean when you speak about them. Either way, to each their own. I watched you, Cass and Diana and I want to thank you for getting me through my decluttering journey. I love living in a house that cleans up fast and when I sit down to rest I don’t feel guilty because there’s so much to do. I’m not allowed to touch my husband’s stuff and he comes from a hoarding family. I just don’t look at his stuff. I have a dust rule. If I haven’t used it in so long that it collects a noticeable amount of dust then it’s time to go.

Heads up Cas, hate to break it to you but the once in a hundred year flood estimates don’t mean poo because of climate change. My family home was a “1 in 100 year” risk. From the sixties to 2005 it flooded 0 times. 2005-now 3 times 😢. Flood proof, make it beautiful and sleep well at night.

I can't even manage my food storage in my kitchen before things expire (I'm much better these days, but...). I could NEVER manage a pantry for extra. Now that I'm a household of one, I am very careful to only have on hand what I use up in normal cooking.

I have three autoimmune diseases. I've been feeling very overwhelmed lately. This podcast has really helped me to realize that I need to reevaluate my priorities. I'm a "doer" and I struggle to allow myself to prioritize. I feel emotionally exhausted from the pressure I put on myself. Thank you for sharing this and for reminding me that I will be healthier if I take the time to take a breath and allow myself permission to not do everything. ❤

Late to this podcast episode, but another reason to decant or replace things like a trash bag holder is to MENTALLY declutter. Packaging is meant to grab your attention and get you to buy. I don't want all that in my face every time I open a cabinet or drawer. My husband loves that about decanting.

Loved this! I heard Cas's story from another video and it was super inspirational, just like Dawn is. My daughter has PDA and we had no idea what was going on the first several years of schooling. With help from some Dr's and more deep dive on my part, I was able to determine she has PDA not just adhd. Found alot of resources in the UK and starting implementing them and it has helped so much! Love you both & hope to meet you both someday, yes y'all are on my bucket 🪣 list to meet & it would be the coolest thing in my book! ❤ keep sharing!

Find what works for you in your life now. The purpose for decluttering your home is to finally have room to create the life you’re dreaming of. So re-evaluating your containers and storage containers is an upgrade.
